As we know the opening round of the season is split over 2 weeks which is going to cause some 50/50 decsions to be made.
It is all hypothetical at this stage but im interested to know what people plan to do about their rookie selections when someone may be named in the first week vs someone they would prefer but cant be certain they will be named in the second week of the round.

For example my current Defence is:

McVeigh, Mitchell, Simpson, Suckling, Mcdonald, Clurey (Langdon, Georgiou)

Now lets say that Laidler is named for Sydney and is starting on the ground in saturdays game, in the first week of round 1. Am I obliged to then get him in for Georgiou not knowing 100 percent if Georgiou will even get a game the following weekend? or do you stick by the player you chose to have and hope that they will play?
I know that this particular example isnt great as I dont expect Georgiou to be a big scorer anyway so it would be logical to just get Laidler but plenty of people are going to be in trickier positions, especially in the midfield where almost all of the rookie guns play in the second week but some options will pop up in the first week

Yep it ruins everything.

I think u pick every basement price rookie for sure, but if i wouldnt trade in laidler for mcdonald as mcdonald is a lock to be playing.

Stash some cash or have a premium / mid pricier you are willing to sacrifice.

And yes to that scenario above.

Of course you can be stubborn and back 'your' rookies but unfortunately for me, I am not on the selection committees so I will grab a non green vested playing rookie.

GM

Yeah you probobly jump on a fielding rookie as long as it doesn't
stuff  up your premo structure.

The biggest problems will be for those coaches who have selected guys priced like Langdonford, Giorgiou, Crouch, Honeychurch, Impey, most R3 and R4.

They will be short of cash and will have to sacrifice a selected gun.

Rookies will have to some sort of JS for me to pick them or I would spend a bit more on a player , so the the first week players like Rohan , Fasolo I will grab and maybe take a risk on one maybe Clurey if named , have left about 200k in the bank to rectify any problems the following week

I started a thread about this a week or so ago

In that example quinny you and I are the same as you know. As long as two cheap defenders are named, then I will back our defence line in - surely Georgiou or another rookie gets named the following week. But only if we get 2 named for sure

Same goes with forward line. If Impey or another cheap week 1 rookie doesn't get named, then I use my spare cash to upgrade him to Rohan

Here's how I think you need to approach this:

Look at where the risks/cheap rookies in your team are
Identify whether they play week 1 or 2
Identify who you should swap or upgrade them to should they not get named
Make sure you have cash for those upgrades

Something else to consider is current team outs eg Hawks have Rioli and Lake both suspended but will come back into best 22 as soon as they're allowed so even if blokes like Langford, Hartung or Hallahan get named in round 1, They are unlikely to be around for long enough to see a price rise anyway (Rioli out for 1 game, Lake 3 IIRC). Wouldn't be surprised for one to be named in round 1 but then dropped round 2 to make way for Rioli. Lenny Hayes and Leigh Montagna may also have a royal spanner in the works for Dunstan, though Dunstan has had a pretty good preseason so maybe others will be dropped ahead of him. Hard to say...

Worth thinking about at least, being named round 1 is not the end of the carnage.

I have picked high priced rookies that I think will be good for JS. Most important of these is Aish who will be downgraded for money if need be. Otherwise it's bye bye mid pricers!

If Hartung or Hallahan get picked then don't get sucked in, but IMO Langford has a chance of cementing a spot in our best 21, so if he is named i'll pick him. Langford has better scoring ability than Clurey/Georgiou/Cameron/Laidler, so ideally id love to pick him. On the other hand, someone else who might get an early gig is Litherland, with Lake out (I know they dont play the same role) i still think he is a chance but will be straight out when Lake is back.

Langford got upgraded last year when Suckling went on the LTI list right? who's spot do you think Langford would take now Suckers is back? Not a big hawks follower so genuine question, I kinda figured he would be the one to take Lake's spot but only until Lake returned...

Theres quite a few fringe players in our side that can do the same sort of role. IMO Simpkin/Anderson/Langford/Hallahan/Hill/Smith/Hartung/Wanganeen etc will all be pushing selection and all trying for that those 3 or so spots in the side (Although Hill/Smith have well and truly cemented 2 of them after last season!) but my prediction, that Ive stood by all pre-season is an extra spot for one of these blokes will appear when/if Sewell gets dropped early on. I love Sewelly but i just believe is getting on a bit and these young guys will be right on his heels for that spot, which IMO is being lead by Langford after his last two preseasons.

With Rioli out, one of these blokes will play round 1 and should be a good indication for who will play if Sewell is dropped.

As Port/Syd/Coll play before Hawthorn, the likes of Clurey/Langdon/Laidler (if named) will get the gig in my side over Langford purely because i know there guaranteed  to play round 1.

Those people that have M.Crouch might want to have a little cash available, the "week 2" alternatives to him are quite pricey

Exactly why I chose Aish over him! Split round is carnage

WizzFizz
