Cost of living allowance being phased out.

Discuss!

My thoughts, if COLA is in, it needs  to be applied across the whole competition.  It isn't,  so get rid of it

Ziplock

Yeah, I would like COLA to be applied competition wide based on an annual or biannual review. That being said, I also think that the clubs in non afl states should also be receiving some salary cap supplement, we constantly lose players due to home sickness but rarely get players coming home for the same reason, and I think a small bonus incentive for young players would help with that.

I think ringo brought up a concept in another thread where players receive like an extra out of cap bonus for the first three years after their initial drafting contract.

Yes, but players go to Sydney to 'avoid the spotlight of Melbourne' and the 'different lifestyle'. There are negatives to living in Sydney, but it also has positives.

You can't say we want to be compensated for the negatives, while at the same time ignoring the positives. Needs to be an open debate, away from politics.

The comp needs an independent advisor saying how much each city costs/benefits.

This is a hard one to really resolve.

What Zip alluded to is my suggestion is for Clubs to be given an allowance for players who are drafted to interstate teams for 3/4 years.  Call it a Living away from home allowance if you like which will be over and above the Salary Cap but has to be repaid proportionally if players return home. This will assist clubs to retain players and possibly avoid go home factors.  Would also make it attractive for new draftees to go interstate as well.

This will replace the COLA completely and be available to all clubs including Victorian clubs say drafting WA players etc.

Cost of Living Index is so up and down as we know and criteria would have to be set if we are to go down that track.

Very valid points Ringo.

I do favour that it should be income tested. Refuse to believe that any player, no matter where they play, would have any 'cost of living' issues if they earn $1m+.

Ringo

maybe not clear but only applies to players drafted not signing players,

Agree that any extra COLA for players on contracts should not be paid.

The other leveling factor I thought of but doubt many would qualify is if they are paid below the average wage for that city then an additional allowance can be paid.  Think even the minimum contracts exceed this though.

I like the idea of new draftee's getting a "Living away from home" allowance (interstate only).  They are on the lowest salaries (base around $55k and then per game payment).  I don't like the idea of re-paying it back if you move back home.  They should just stop getting it.

Diet cola tastes like shower, fact. Not that i have tried shower.

I dont believe that a player on $100k a year needs to have a COLA. First year players, especially the rookies should get it but once you go over the $100k take it away.

It is tough living in Sydney living off $100k a year but then you start dating people like Bingle and then $100k is not enough

Why dont interstate players that move to Melbourne get this either??

Most teens don't make $100k a year

The issue is the loss of young players (aka brisbane with docherty, longer etc.), rather than Marquee 1mil+ players.

100k is enough to live comfortably in Sydney, but considering the length of a footballing career, I wouldn't blame people for going 'well, it costs like 20k+ more to live in Sydney than is does in Adelaide which is 20% of my pay, maybe I should just move the hell back home'.

the up side being you aren't dating Bingle

Mailman the 2nd

Once again money men like Eddie Mcguire manages to control the AFL, pretty frustrating.

The misconception seems to be that COLA was the only reason that Franklin and Tippett came to Sydney.

In my eyes she is. Then again, I do need glasses for reading :)

Serious though, I agree, new draftees and rookies yes, but players earning over, idk, $150k-$180k, nah!
