At the moment I'm leaning towards having no "keepers"..

... But things like 'right to match' or some kind of discount when bidding (i.e. you could bid $2m for a player you already have, but only $1.8m counts on salary cap) seem much better to me.

The issue I have with keepers is someone might select Joe Bloggs for $100,000.... But he has a breakout year... It would be pretty unfair to be able to keep him on $100,000.
Just make it so a keeper has to come out of the top 50 players. Or be one of the first 2-3 drafted by the club.

That still means that they are getting a player potentially worth millions for a bargain price.
yeah i agree has to be a right to match type thing i reckon for this very reason Ossman  ;)

Still think each franchise should name say three desired players each year and that franchise has the right to match offers on the three players but the new price is the price the player will be in their Salary Cap.  If a franchise decides not to match player leaves. Think retaining 3 out of 10 should be allowed.

Is it? $400k BASE is a lot different to just $100k. And you know, if someone wants to keep Judd because he only costs 500k towards the cap, leaving the other stars still on the table, more boon to them.

HintT

Could just have it that a player can only stay 2/3 seasons at most at any franchise.

^ I like what Ringo suggests, and have the 'right to match' for x amount of players. That way you get to keep the players you want, at whatever value the market has them.

HintT

Do you not have to bid when it's RTM? Just wait for the highest offer and then you can match it?
