Scrads

The other issue is some of the grounds (MCG, Gabba, Adelaide Oval, SCG) cannot be used outside of the dates of the season as it is now. If the season were to start earlier or run longer, it would be almost impossible for scheduling. I don't mind the idea of 2 practice games to give the kids a run and some new strategies a try rather than just jumping into the main season.

^ love your idea Ringo, if we had to have one. Great format.

But generally I think get rid of it altogether if they aren't playing for anything.

some are playing for spots

They can play for spots in intra-club matches.

not the same

Yeah, I agree with KB.

Playing against your teammates in an intra-club surely can't compare to the experience of playing against an opposition club?

I agree it isn't the same as an AFL match.

.... but these aren't AFL matches, they are experimental. Just like you'd do in an intra-club match.

The youngsters in the NAB Challenge will be looking to prove themselves, just like in an intra-club match.

The experienced/secure players won't risk injury in NAB Challenger, just like in an intra-club match.

Agree with Oss here. Young kids fighting for spots would go just as hard in an intra as a NAB game.
There isn't much difference between NAB and most Intraclub matches, except the quality of opposition. As Intra Clubs would have weaker teams across the board compared to NAB games

Tend to disagree here a little.  Only talking from Lions perspective and from observations.  In intraclub trials a player can shine because of the couple of weaker lines that result when compared to a full AFL hit out.

eg in Brisbanes intraclub trial McGuane stood out because he was marked up on Justin Clarke whereas Lisle marked up on Merrett as an example.  Know clubs can switch around but there is nothing that a real hit out. Also believe the clubs need the practice matches maybe call them that rather tahn the preseason challenge to test new game plans etc.
