Collingwood AFL player Marley Williams says he was 'mob attacked' by three men before he broke the jaw of one of them outside a West Australian nightclub.

Mr Williams, one of Collingwood's brightest young stars, is accused of putting Matthew Robertson, 30, in hospital with one punch outside Studio 146 in Albany, about 400 kilometres south-east of Perth, in December 2012.

The 20-year-old has denied causing grievous bodily harm, which carries a possible ten year jail term.

He is claiming self-defence, saying moments earlier Mr Robertson and two friends had assaulted him in the toilets.

Really like the guy as a player, think he was really improving.

As for who gets games? Tony Armstrong maybe? Probably a bit more wishful thinking... but maybe Tom Langdon could surprise us all and debut early? Or they could even pick somebody like Adam Oxley.

He won't, that's just the max sentence that can be given to someone found guilty of GBH.

Will be interesting to compare this to the Murray Newman case, who if I recall correctly will be sentenced in early March. Differences between the two is Newman and the guy he hit arranged to meet up to have a fight after the guy had slept with Newman's girlfriend, whereas in this case Williams punched a guy who apparently had his arms crossed and was defenseless. Considering the amount of media one hit coward punches have gotten at the moment this may not be good for Williams...

The one punch laws here are quite strict I can see both Williams and Newman going to prison but for how long I`m not sure.
Our friend was a victim of one punch(he stil isn`t quite right) and the guy went to jail if recall correctly it was for 3 yrs

Random seeing my hometown in the news... The guy who got hit is a friend of a friend and saw some pretty disturbing pics on facebook... Doesn't look good for Marley.

Does anyone know if the sentence would have immediate affect? eg. if sentenced to prison, would he be sent there straight away or would there be a delay?

My basic knowledge of the law (which granted is not much) is that once sentenced to prison you serve out the time immediately. I think there are special circumstances where you can get a delay, but don't think it occurs often...
