EXCLUSIVE: CARLTON has taken its first step in keeping a league-high seven free agents at the club after tying Andrew Walker to a new long-term deal today.

The Blues enter the 2014 season as the most exposed side to free agency raids only months after losing goalsneak Eddie Betts to Adelaide on a lucrative deal they couldn't match.

Captain Marc Murphy, gun forward Jarrad Waite, key defender Michael Jamison, best and fairest Kade Simpson, No. 1 draft pick Bryce Gibbs and veteran backman Heath Scotland all fall out of contract at the end of the year.

But Walker this morning agreed terms on a three-year contract that has the Blues "very confident" his unsigned teammates will replicate.

Honestly, Carlton should have used Gibbs as trade bait when they had the chance. He is a seagull and doesnt impact enough games.
