Hi everyone,

After talking it over with Ossie I have decided that I am going to put my hat in the ring for a head coach role at one of these British clubs.

This will actually be a co-coach application alongside one of my good mates from outside of Fan Footy who the Terran X coaches among us will recognise as grinpowderdiah.

The main reason I am proposing and posting this application is because while he's super keen I wasn't sure that you'd take an application from someone who's very new to the site or has only made a couple of posts.

I am in favour of getting new coaches involved in the XV competitions and I think he'll be a great addition to the community. Not only is he very active but he'll engage in banter and loves the trading and drafting aspect of the games (judging by how much discussion I had with him over the TX drafts/trade periods).

I am always in favour of getting new coaches involved rather than having several people with 2, 3 or even 4 teams which is why I only ever applied for assistant roles after getting the AXV head coach role. The only reason I moved up to Co-coach at the Crosby Cruisers was that Ossie wanted someone to help out a bit more over the off-season but he thinks that now he should be ok as sole coach :)

As grinpowderdiah doesn't know the XV competitions or Fan Footy very well I thought a co-coach role would be a great way to ease him in to it but I'd be in favour of handing of the reigns/taking a back seat as a senior assistant after a season or two.

The teams available are very interesting. The Werewolves are arguably the flag favourites although know a couple of others might disagree (*cough, cough whatlez) while the Hoods are also a very strong team and the Steins have plenty of good players and on their day could match it with the best.

Here's our combined thoughts on the best XVs for each team.

Winchester Werewolves Best XV
Def: J Bartel, M Hibberd, S Fisher, N Vlastuin
Mid: G Ablett (C), N Fyfe (VC), M Priddis, B Cunnington
Ruc: D Cox
Fwd: J Roughead, J Gunston, D Zorko, A Tomlinson
Uti: L Ball, D Pearce
Emg: C Guthrie (D), J Melksham, T Lynch

Room for improvement
This team would be our #1 preference if we were to get a job, or were able to pick which team we are taking over. Not only have the Werewolves got a super starting team but they also have some really good youngsters in Hibberd, Vlastuin, Guthrie, Thurlow, Fyfe, Cunnington, Gunston, Tomlinson, Hickey, Merrett, P Cripps and Nankervis.

There's not a lot that needs doing to make this team competitive but I would be looking to trade away some of the fringe/depth players and possibly a good non-starting youngster or two to pick up another premium back and forward. Also there is a big discrepancy between Cox and the next best ruckmen in Hickey and Nankervis. Both should be good players in the long term but in the short term a more experienced ruckman would be needed and this is another area to address.

Nottingham Hoods Best XV
Def: A Walker, C Dempsey, H Taylor, L Dunn
Mid: S Pendlebury (C), D Hannebery (VC), C Masten, M Rosa
Ruc: A Sandilands
Fwd:  R Gray, J Podsiadly, S Gumbleton, L McGuane
Uti: C Jones, B Sewell
Emg: D Roberton, S Ross, A Otten

Room for improvement
While on paper this team may not look as strong as you might think but, in reality it is a very good team for the Sportal scoring system which is why it finished 2nd on the ladder last year. If the BXV competition keeps this scoring system then there is no reason why the Nottingham Hoods can't finish in the Top 4 again with a bit of luck and they would be our #2 choice if we had our pick of teams.

The biggest downfall of this team compared with the Werewolves is it's depth and a lack of quality youngsters. A lot of older players means that the new coach will either need to try an bolster the team in the short team to push for a flag or do a bit of re-building around two of the Sportal scoring system's best midfielders in Pendlebury and Hannebery.

Staines Steins Best XV
Def: R Henderson, D Terlich, L Spurr, J Johannisen
Mid: K Jack (C), R O'Keefe (VC), H Hartlett, T Mzungu
Ruc: I Maric
Fwd: K Tippett, J Elliott, M Clark, J Jenkins
Uti: R Crowley, B Maister
Emg: N Grima, J Cachia, L Jetta

Room for improvement
The Stains Steins team is a tough one which is why it would be our #3 preference. However, having said that any team will do so we'd be up to the challenge if you wanted to give it to us.

While the Steins have an out-and-out gun captain in Kieran Jack and some other good players in O'Keefe, Kurt Tippett, Hartlett, Maric and Henderson their team is really struggling for depth on all lines.

The first priority for me would be picking up another midfielder as when you have to start Crowley (who I might add is probably suited to this game best out of any) and then the next best midfielder is another tagger in Cachia you know your fantasy team is istruggling.

The last spot in defence and the forward line are also problem areas - as is the lack of a second ruck option after Maric. At the very least we'd want to try snag Hampson or Stephenson as a 'hand-cuff' back up in case Maric goes down with injury because at this stage Tippett and Jenkins (who aren't even listed as rucks anyway) are needed as starting forwards.

There are some really good youngsters in Hogan, Josh Kelly, Brandon Jack and Jed Anderson but also a lot of 'nothing players' in LRT, Rutten, Mitch Brown and Angus Graham. We'd be looking at cleaning out the list somewhat and replacing these guys with younger players for the future.

Thanks Memph, really appreciate the time and effort that you yourself have put into this.

Hi to all, just popping my head around the traps here (amazingly for the first time as an actual poster after being a long time reader - yes they are real types) to confirm the above co-application with Memph for one of these available sides. As Memph mentioned I am an assistant coach to him in the Terran X competition, which I have thoroughly enjoyed even though it is my first venture outside mainstream fantasy football (Fantasy, DT, Supercoach, UF etc). For any that know me around there, they would know I am active in place of Memph whenever required - generally I have been quite active but refrain from double posting on Memph as I'm just the assistant there and so on!

In any case, I am happy to discuss my credentials further if required.  Without any further though, please carry on :)

HintT

Ah nice, look like I've just come here in the nick of time.

I'm around the Hawk's BF board more but been a member here for ages, but only just recovered my password here lol. I've lurked fairly heavily since '10, mainly around game-day, so I've seen these comps since Worlds started in '12 but never been around here in (early) Feb to apply or whenever vacancies pop out. So will put my name into nominations now!

Assuming the new scoring is one of DT or SC, and using the positionings that CD gave those games, how I rate the teams:

Nottingham Hoods
DEF: Harry Taylor, Andrew Walker, Courtenay Dempsey, Lynden Dunn
MID: Scott Pendlebury, Daniel Hannebery, Chris Masten, Matt Rosa
RUC: Aaron Sandilands
FWD: Robbie Gray, Andy Otten, James Podsiadly, Taylor Garner
UTI: Clinton Jones, Dawson Simpson
EMG: Dylan Robertson, Brad Sewell, Luke McGuane

The Hoods have an interesting list, some top players, a great defense but perhaps the inbetween is lacking from their youngsters. Judging by the sheer number of midfielders in the squad, would be trying to trade as many as I can to improve the other positions like the forward line or ruck.

Staines Steins
DEF: Ricky Henderson, Dean Terlich, Nathan Grima, Lee Spurr
MID: Kieren Jack, Ryan O'Keefe, Hamish Hartlett, Tendai Mzungu
RUC: Ivan Maric
FWD: Kurt Tippett, Jamie Elliott, Mitchell Clark, Jesse Hogan
UTI: Tim Mohr, Josh Jenkins
EMG: Josh Kelly, Matthew Spangher, Marty Clarke

A good side although I think DPP hurt it compared to last year's positions (no idea on how sportsbet allocated them tbh).  Weaknesses are depth, particular in the ruck, so would address those needs.

Winchester Werewolves
DEF: Jimmy Bartel, Michael Hibberd, Sam Fisher, Nick Vlastuin
MID: Gary Ablett Jnr, Nathan Fyfe, Matt Priddis, Luke Ball,
RUC: Dean Cox
FWD: Jarryd Roughead, Jack Gunston, Dayne Zorko, Tom T. Lynch
UTI: Ben Cunnington, Tom Hickey
EMG: Tom Young, Sam Gibson, Adam Tomlinson

This team's premiership window is N-O-W whilst most of their guns are still here. Would trade according to that, defense could be worked on too.

***

That's my summary of those teams. I could wax lyrical more about them but that's something you do behind closed doors, not in front of potential friendly rivals at the trade table. ;)

Now I haven't any experience on site on the XV games but I don't think my fantasy sport credentials lack.

My fantasy experiences since '08:
Play Supercoach, DreamTeam, Ultimate-Footy (3rd year) every year
In a Private Keeper League (SC scoring) with mates
Play other fantasy sport games (nfl, nhl, cricket, soccer, cycling) yearly

So I think it's safe to say I'm a fantasy nut, and have the grasp on what's needed for a keeper league.

Also whilst I have the chance to plug myself, I will say that one of the best things I've got going for me is actually that I don't have any fingers in any of the other XV comps so my time here will be 100% focused on my BXV team which I don't think many other nominations can say. So reckon I got an edge there!

Cheers,
H

PS, all that said, whilst I think I'm a dead cert beaut, I may not get in to head coach a team, so if anyone here is looking for an Assistant Coach (even rival codes!), feel free to poach me to help if I don't get a main gig! Win-win either way (just like my trading) ;)

If I get an AXVs. job, I'll be looking for an assistant or two.
