It may seem like a stupid question given the experience of one and greenness of another. But considering their similar prices.

Xavier Ellis or Dom Sheed.......?

They are really talking up Sheed, havent heard a word about Ellis.

Sheed for me.

Dayze

I genuinely believe both could end up being the top scoring rookies this season....
With Kerr retiring I see sheed starting round one right in the guts.
I have both right now

+1

i thin sheeds most likely, Ellis no doubt is a great talent but coming in on injury worrys as well cause he breaks down more than a 1976 volvo wagon

NickyBoy

Biggest worry with ellis is his constant injuries. I'd probably stay away from him and go with Sheed based on the fact that Ellis breaks down a lot.

Dayze

I agree. When we signed Ellis I was very sceptical.
But we are 2 weeks away from nab and he has had no slip ups.
Been fully training and looks in good nick from what I've seen.

Was one of the hawks best on ground in the 08 granny. A mature age player priced at about a late first round rookie, u have got to strongly consider.

JS should b very good aswell Simpson seems to love him.

oooohhh yeah, that is a very good point.

Sheed's form in the WAFL has been ok without being spectacular, he's been playing more outside and hasn't really imposed himself defensively. At all levels, Sheed averages 1 tackle a game, unless he can really improve on this he'll be scoring 60-70, which is ok but perhaps not good enough for a high priced rookie. Therefore Ellis must be the preferred option, provided he doesn't get injured between now & round 1.

Ellis never really caught my eye in what games he played at the Hawks but they are a very good team he might just get the chance he needs and as for Sheed keep hearing good things lets see how he goes in the NAB cup

eaglesman

didnt think sheed would make it in the best 22 myself ... but he seems to be pressing hard for a spot!

Dayze

Sheed won the larke medal for best player at the TAC champs.
Over players like Boyd, Kelly, McDonald, KK etc.
Not many 16/17 year olds play at Wafl level tho. Only half a dozen I think.

Strange stat on his tackling. Bit concerning. Not the hardest thing to fix tho.
From memory averaged about 140 sc points in the national champs.
Had a 28/29 disposal game and 4 goals against Vic country when he broke his collarbone.

eaglesman

is making me consider to get him on my bench ... ill be playing ellis before him though

Speculator

That tackle stat is a concern indeed. If he can't tackle he won't last long before being dropped.

Here's my write-up on Sheed I did a while back.

Dom Sheed

There's no denying that Sheed is as cool as a cucumber when delivering by foot. At the champs his goal-kicking was particularly notable in that he managed to showcase a fine array of party tricks - snaps from the boundary, long bombs from on the 50metre line (under pressure) and some calm and composed set shots when the heat was on. In general play he is as a methodical as a surgeon, he creates space and usually sets up the play like a 5-Star general. As far as decision-making is concerned, Sheed is close to being top of the class, whether it be short kicking to advantage, or kicking long under immense pressure. Sheed has been likened to Simon Black and it's easy to see why - much like Black he can hang on to the ball and spot up a target using his outstanding peripheral vision, this usually results in a 25-35 metre pass, but he overwhelmingly finds his mark, setting up his team for a forward thrust or a shot on goal. At the Champs he lead the way for inside 50's and was instrumental in taking WA to the final.

If there is any criticism to be leveled at Sheed, it's that he is particularly reliant on his left shoe. As good as he is at finding space, it's an area which may lead to a veneer of predictability. This could become an issue at the highest level if opponents begin to corral and box him in as they anticipate his first move. He doesn't possess huge break-away pace so he may find himself unable to pierce a strongly manned defence. However he does possess excellent agility so more often than not, he'll be able to find a man in a neutral to marginally offensive position. It's for this reason he may be considered as a good kick but one who may be lacking in some hurt factor.

Sheed thoroughly deserves his first round billing and shows all the hallmarks of an AFL quality player. His inside game is top notch, maybe not to the level of Matt Crouch, but he is more than capable of winning clearances and utilising effective delivery from the ruckman.  At WAFL level, he

adopted a more outside role as he comes to grips with the bigger bodies, but has still managed to moderately influence games with an average of 14 possessions over 4 matches.

Defensively, Sheed is still a work in progress. At the u/18 carnival, at Colts level and in the WAFL, he has averaged just one tackle a game. Whilst one shouldn
