The Port Adelaide Football Club is surprised and disappointed that the Adelaide Crows would choose to wear a replica guernsey based on the traditional South Australian state guernsey in the first Showdown at the Adelaide Oval.

Port Adelaide considers this an iconic jumper and respects the feats of the many South Australian greats who have worn this guernsey with such pride over so many years.

Port Adelaide believes this is not about club versus club, Port Adelaide versus the Crows. The State guernsey rises well above both our football clubs. It is a guernsey that is sacred and most significantly has always been earned by only the best representative players in our proud football state.

Our club's current and former South Australian born players are disappointed by the Crows' decision. This guernsey is intrinsic and sacrosanct to South Australian footballers and it should be protected at all times.

The Crows have stated they are wearing the guernsey "to celebrate South Australian football". Port Adelaide finds this reasoning peculiar given that wearing it in a Showdown will actually divide the state. This guernsey is a symbol of South Australian football unification, not division.

After the Adelaide Crows announced that they will be wearing the South Australian state jumper in the first Showdown at the Adelaide Oval on Wednesday, Port Adelaide immediately called their bluff and announced they will do the same.

Power president David Koch told reporters that it was an easy decision. "At first I thought, 'how dare they?'," said Koch of the Crows. "But then the penny dropped and it all started to make sense."

"This is the first Showdown at the Adelaide oval and there are so many years of South Australian football history here. What better way to respect the history than by having both teams wear the state jumper."

In a further show of respect, fans will not be allowed into Adelaide Oval unless they are wearing the historic jumper, which can be purchased online for $345.

Haha, that was a good read, and cheers for giving me knowledge of that website. Check out wunderground.ie their a pretty good satire site.

The Crows must have known that it would get the reaction it has from Port and Port's fans, which suggests it is some sort of marketing ploy.

I guess the question of whether it works will depend on whether their own fans like the idea?

PowerMan

a few of my crows fans don't like due to the SOO heritage. They're hating the idea Victorians are going to wear this great SA icon. Lets face it the SA like the VIC, WA, TAS jumpers are all iconic. I'm sure Vics over there would feel the same, and I'm actually surprised that Andrew Demetriou is going to allow this.

also a state jumper is meant to bring a state together, this is doing the complete opposite.

This is only going further galvanise the Port playing group IMO as well and give them more fuel to smash the living crap out of Adelaide.

Invert the colours or something, but don't send Vic's out in a SA SOO jumper. It's sacrilege.

Stupid move Crows, surely the SANFL would have some kind of say in this? ???

Apparently they are happy that Crows are "honouring" them in this way.

I don't agree with it but thinking about it more it's a clever marketing strategy by the Crows.

Last year they were overtaken by Port on the field, when Port were a "feel good story" rising from the bottom of the ladder against all odds to win a final. Port have also been announcing many player re-signings as well as major sponsor coups.

The Crows spent all of last year trying to get rid of the stain of the Tippett saga and needed something else for people to talk about. They needed to get their fans back to being passionate about the club and the thing that does that the most is the Crows v Port rivalry. They knew this move would piss off Port and it's fans and that's the thing that a lot of Crows fans take the most enjoyment in.

While we are on the subject of jumpers be good if the Power took the date off or changed it on the back of their jumper. :P
