Just on JMartin

TALENTED youngster Jack Martin will spend more time in the midfield when Gold Coast plays the Brisbane Lions on Sunday after a solid NAB Challenge opener against Essendon.

Martin had 14 disposals as he alternated between half-forward and the midfield against the Bombers, and coach Guy McKenna said that was likely to change when the Suns travelled to Townsville this weekend.

After defeating Essendon by one point at Metricon Stadium, McKenna said Gold Coast would rest some of its midfield stars for Sunday's match against its Queensland rivals.

Captain Gary Ablett, vice-captains Michael Rischitelli and David Swallow, and NAB Rising Star winner Jaeger O'Meara will be among those to sit out.

This means more minutes in the middle for the likes of Martin, Jesse Lonergan and Harley Bennell, who will play his first match for the season after overcoming a calf niggle.

So we will get to see more of him in the next game

Toga

That's not too comforting IMO though, as McKenna is pretty much saying at the moment Martin is a second choice midfielder, and will only play in there when the big guns are out.

On a side note j Mart was pretty average.
Didn't start in the guts much at all.

Gonna have to average at least 80-85 to make his selection at all vindicated.
Feeling more and more comfortable leaving him out.

1st big game. Cut him some slack. Mind you, his disposal looks a bit iffy. I'm going to hold him at the moment, but Claye Beams and/or Dom Sheed is on standby.

Mind you, having said that I know a few last year not starting Jaegar and in more particular, Wines and they were scrambling to trade him in for rd2.. interesting times.

REALLY ...you knew people who DIDN'T start Jaeger last year? he was 117k lol WOWZERS.

200K+ rookies were only ever going to be viable if there were absolutly no cheaper options, at 220k you need to score 20 points more average than a 117k rookie.

Martin will have to show something to stay in my team, needs to average around 80 to be viable at his price.

Back on Swallow, he was played on a back flank and looked pretty sore a lot of the time last season, still averaged 80.  Prestia and McKenna both mentioned him playing predominately midfield, looks to be moving a lot better and played well last night. tick for me

Honestly Martin is a scrawny kid and not yet up to it. Have been looking for an excuse to not start him and I think that game gave me enough. I know its his first game and nab cup but he looked out of his depth. Im not paying over 200k for a kid unless they are a ready made AFL player with an AFL ready body and hes a while off yet

Out of his depth? It wasn't as though he was rushed and fumbly. He still did a lot of good things every time he got it

Thought he done enough for GC but not enough for $222 in SC

Made a few errors but I meant more just the way he was running around like a headless chook. I dont think hes going to average anywhere near 85 which you would want for him to be worth it.

Back on topic though, Swallow is baisically a lock in my team now. Not because of his game but because everyone from the GC that was interviewed during the game mentioned about him being a permanent midfielder this year. I think at worst he will average low 90's which ill take

Fid

I'm still tossing up between Swallow for my for my D4 or Pav for my F4 :-\

_wato

Still a little bit nervous about Swallow.

Noticed his rotation into the backline was in the back pocket. If, Prestia and Bennell and co begin well I can see Swallow's mid time decreasing a little and I don't see him seeing the ball much or providing much off a back pocket compare to a back flank.

I would like to see him when the full team is in and proper rotations occur. A little bit sceptical at the moment.

roti

For all my justifications for picking Swallow, he is not actually in my team at the moment  ;D
Could well be by round 1 I imagine my team will be completely different by then, bummer he's sitting out the next game
