Adan Goodes just named Australian of the Year.

Well done Adam and a great reward for all your work on and off the field

Grazz

Congrats Adam such a worthy recipient.

Master Q

Firstly, congrats Goodsey.

Not playing down Adam, but do you guys think the whole King Kong saga helped his cause?

Grazz

That's a real possibility Q but still a worthy winner wether that occurred or not.

Whats your view? On the real possibility or not Grazzman ;)

Well done Goodesy, champ!

But I have to agree, sporting figures are already recognised and paid for their efforts.

It's no so much that they are getting paid already, more that they have a career which allows them to do community work. While others give there entire lives to causes

Ringo

Whilst I agree that at times there are probably more deserving winners than Sporting Heroes the fact is that Sporting Personalities have been Australian of Year 14 times of the 56 years it has been running more than any other category, There is basically always around the balance between sport, science and arts in the award.

To be fair to Goodes he did a considerable amount of off field work whilst he was off the field with injury a lot with Michael Long.

Master Q

Eddie McGuire doesn't suggest any average joe to play King Kong...

Seriously though, it was the first thing I thought about when I head he was named AOTY.

Id like to think that the charity work and the work he does for his people etc is what got him the award I prefer not to dwell on the negatives which detract from what he has just achieved. Its not an award that is allocated by one person there is a panel I believe so I think he got for all the good he does and not because someone is trying to appease the indigenous population.

Cant argue with you there mate, I to am not a big fan of those in sport getting this award compared to someone that has donated their time, full time to a cause over a good deal of time. Adam has given a lot over his time as a Swan but not as much as someone on a full time basis over the same length of time would have done for their cause.

kilbluff1985

would Crawf of came close to wining it?

Ziplock

Look, I agree with you guys to a point, but let's be completely fair here.

A lot of people who are up for these awards, like for instance, scientists like the one a few years back who won it for inventing like spray on skin for burns patients, do dedicate their lives to the thing that wins them the award. However, to be fair, they're also employed and paid to do so (using this case specifically). While Goodes is paid to play football- anything else comes completely out of his own time/ pocket.

anyway, ziplock out. :P I dont know enough about the other nominees to argue this either way :P
