I read that, cried, read it again and cried more. So depressing.

Salary Cap

Ok. I've tried to make it simpler (or more streamlined), and taking in all feedback:

- All players you have played less than 10 games over the last 3 years are given a price of $100,000
- All players Average from the last 3 years is multiple by 5,000 (magic number) to get a salary
- Defender salaries are multiplied by 1.05, Rucks by 1.1 and Forwards by 1.15 - To compensate for them scoring less and being less available. Positions based on 2014, if they change for 2015, the salary DOESN'T CHANGE. Just to make it simpler. All defender-midfielders considered defenders, forward-midfielders are forwards, ruck-forwards are rucks and defender-forwards are forward.

The top 20 players in the comp are now:

Surname   Given   Club   SalaryAdj
Ablett   Gary jnr   Sao Paulo Pumas   $672,000
Dangerfield   Patrick   Seoul Magpies   $645,000

Martin   Dustin   Moscow Spetsnaz   $557,000
Roughead   Jarryd   Sao Paulo Pumas   $554,000

The Salaries for each team are:

PNL Reindeers   $15,431,000
Toronto Wolves   $15,073,000
Buenos Aires Armadillos   $14,705,000
Mexico City Suns   $14,366,000
Sao Paulo Pumas   $14,354,000
Dublin Destroyers   $14,299,000
London Royals   $14,083,000
Cape Town Cobras   $13,900,000
Tokyo Samurai   $13,715,000
Cairo Sands   $13,697,000
Pacific Islanders   $13,694,000
Wellington Warriors   $13,600,000
Berlin Brewers   $13,522,000
New York Revolution   $13,248,000
Moscow Spetsnaz   $12,981,000
Seoul Magpies   $12,561,000
New Delhi Tigers   $12,172,000
Beijing Thunder   $11,533,000

Average of $13.7m per team. Given all teams will have retirements and delistings, reckon $14m is fine.

I mean, we've already lost these players:

Glass   Darren   Beijing Thunder   $350,000
Clark   Mitch   Berlin Brewers   $443,000
King   Jake   Berlin Brewers   $363,000
Cox   Dean   Buenos Aires Armadillos   $580,000
Scotland   Heath   Buenos Aires Armadillos   $474,000
Bock   Nathan   Cape Town Cobras   $100,000
Bootsma   Joshua   Dublin Destroyers   $215,000
Brown   Jonathan   London Royals   $396,000
Williams   Tom   Moscow Spetsnaz   $306,000
Cassisi   Domenic   New Delhi Tigers   $348,000
Rutten   Ben   New Delhi Tigers   $291,000
Maxwell   Nick   Seoul Magpies   $368,000
Maister   Beau   Seoul Magpies   $285,000
Hayes   Nick   Toronto Wolves   $100,000
Hayes   Lenny   Wellington Warriors   $498,000
Byrnes   Shannon   Wellington Warriors   $309,000

Which is $5.426m, which would bring the average down to about $13.4m just from those, with a promise of many more to come. Happy to discuss though!

So, I'd see it working like this:

Trade Period 1

Our everyday normal trading period. No limits, and if you don't want to care about the salary cap, you don't have to.

First List Lodgements

This is the time where you'd delist any players that are deadwood.

Each club will also have 'Free Agents', players who have played 10 games in Home & Away reserves. If you want to guarantee these players don't get snapped up, you need to increase their salary by 25%. A list of Free agents are attached.

Teams who wish to decrease a player's value can do so here. I.e. Buenos Aires saying 'I want to decrease Swan's salary to $400k'. If any coach wants to pay that price (or any price up to his original salary), Buenos Aires will be forced to either match the maximum bid, keep him at his original price, or let him go (to be compensated with a draft pick).

Free Agency

All delisted players will be up for auction, with a $100,000 minimum reserve.

All players who have played 10 games in Home & Away reserves are up for grabs, unless they have had a 25% pay increase. Again these will go up for auction, with a reserve price of 50% more than current salary (if a player has a salary of $300,000, the bidding starts at $450,000).

Any team who is over the $14m cap, can have players poached until they are UNDER the salary cap. If say PNL are on $14.3m, and other clubs express interest in 4 of its players, PNL can choose which player (or players) they'd be willing to let go to get under the cap. This player (or players) would be also go up for Auction.  PNL would then be compensated with a draft pick (to be worked out).

No team can go over the $14m cap if they are buying players.

Trade Period 2

Again limited restrictions, except this time you can not go over the $14m value. If you are still over this value, you can not trade for more players unless it reduces your salary.

2nd List Lodgements

Final delistings, etc, to determine draft order

Drafts

International, preseason and rookie

3rd Trade Period After Positions are Finalised

Like previous years, only 1 for 1 trades (or 2 for 2, 3 for 3, 4 for 4). Only because of positional changes, and again same salary restrictions apply.

.... I think we've nutted it out?

Current Free Agents

(1 reserves match to go, so these are the players who have played 9 games or more. It will be 10 or more after next round).

I really like the cap ossie and i don't mind cutting a few of my players to fit under the cap and can see it balancing the comp abit, but is free agency definitely on or are you still floating that idea. Personally im really against free agency.

just because it can hit certain teams harder. I know its bias but Dublin will be hit probably the hardest of any comp. For one I have young players so bottom teams will poach my guys. Someone poaching Todd Goldstein would basically end my team and the only way I can stop it is to cut some of my players who I have built up.

Nige

All but one of our free agents are or will be defenders next season.

To get something for them, we'd have to retain them (by upping their salary by 25%) and then trade them, is that right?

ossie85

Holz at the moment you are only $300k over, so it would be extremely unlikely that someone would be able to poach Goldstein

As for people poaching depth,  you have the option of keeping any player you want by increasing his salary.  But the point of a cap is so that others can get more depth. Beijing could only field 14 last week

Really like this amended version to be honest. Correct me if I read it wrong, but as far as I can see the only players you can lose to poaching are those that you haven't played enough in the seniors, so really won't be missed that much if people take them...

Although in saying that, maybe one other addition to the rule could be that to be free agents they have to be over a certain age, ie 22 or 23. I only say this because in the AFL you only become a free agent once you have been at a club for a while, so would be a bit harsh to lose youngsters who aren't scoring well enough yet to be in the team, but have massive potential. For example from my list Jake Stringer. I see him as a very important part of my future, but since he has only played 2 seasons he's not up to starting each week, but very handy backup. If I was to lose him because he didn't play enough it would be disappointing. I'm sure many teams will also have youngsters in similar positions...

Considering we want to keep our youngsters in Patton/Merrett, do we have to offer them 25% more to their salary to ensure we keep them. This may be tricky considering we're over the cap already.... Just say we're at 13.9 Mil after the first trading period, going under the 14 mil cap and teams want to grab Casboult/Patton/Merrett in Free Agency who we want to keep, we can't fight them off so we pretty much let them go for like nothing I assume (Just like draft pick consolation but we put in years into Patton and got him for #4) :-\. So letting him go even though we're under the cap would pretty much piss me off :P.

ok i get it now.

just a question. Brodie Martin will be playing in my seniors this week (like he did last week) this means he stays on 9 games. Does this also include finals or purely the home and away season becasue i might not play him in my finals squad if i get a few injured players back.

just think that should be the case as some teams arent playing finals so should keep it even. So want to make sure Martin isnt a free agent.

Nige

Oh, I just read it all again, there's a trade period before the free agency period so we can in fact trade some of our depth. Awesome!

people will need to pay 495k for stringer which is quite alot though so not sure people will do that.

ossie85

Happy to add an age limit also, 21 probably :)

Justin Bieber

Teams like Beijing and lower down will be able to afford them, especially if suit their long term plans Holz ;).

Think you'll have to enforce an age limit of maybe 22 Oss, just as a way to allow younger guys a few years in the system to mature and start scoring better. If that's the case I don't mind the new system!

Given, that is a heck of a lot of players PNL have to get rid off... 1.4 Mil worth :o.

Toga

That sounds cool Oz :)

by the end of this discussion, bottom teams won't be able to target any quality lol
