ALAN Richardson says the next generation of Saints coming through the ranks is what has most pleased him since taking over as senior coach.

Richardson took control at the Saints in mid November and has since overseen pre-season training, including the club's altitude camp to Boulder in the US.

During that time Richardson has come to get to know his playing group a little better, and says he is liking what he sees from his young group.

"(So) it's certainly been the younger guys (that I've been most surprised by), guys like (Jimmy) Webster, (Tom) Curren, (Sebastian) Ross, (Josh) Saunders, in their second and third years.

"(Jack) Newnes would be another one. You know, (guys with) really big bodies, really good people, very hard working and from that point of view I've been pleasantly surprised about the next tier that are coming through."
