1st crack of the year. Here it is:

DEF: Bartel (MID), Hanley (MID), McVeigh (MID), Mitchell (MID), Suckling, Kolodjashnij (Gardiner, McStay)

MID: Ablett, Pendlebury, Murphy, Beams, Acres, Morabito, Dumont, Garlett (MID) (Crouch, Hunt (DEF))

RUC: Naitanui, Pyke (Lobb, Brown (FWD))

FWD: Dangerfield (MID), Wingard (MID), Roughead, Dixon (RUC), Clark, Kersten (Taylor (MID), Kennedy-Harris)

$30,800 in the kitty.

Rookies will obviously change depending on Round 1 availability.

Avoided most of the high priced rookies as I feel the cap is better spent elsewhere.

Gone heavy on keepers in DEF and FWD and light in MID as the majority of the best rookies available are in the MID.

Let me know what you think, Thanks.

Very strong in defence probably get by with 3 guns
Light in the mids doubt you are going to find 6 cheap mid rookies that will play regular games ( I will be very happy to have 6 in my whole team )
Rucks different don't mind that with Pyke in there
Forwards look good
Overall I think you are going to have to wait till close to start of the season to see if your team is viable with the cheap rookie plan cheers  ;)

Ringo

Interesting structure ben but just remember highest scoring players are usually mids,

As defence is way too strong at this stage I would look at downgrading Bartel in defence to a mid pricer like Birchill, Grimes Hurn or similar and look at bringing in another mid maybe upgrading one of your rookies to Thomas if cash allows (Have not done the sums so not sure).

I like the pick of Pyke as a unique but you have a fall back position as well but I doubt both gardner and McStay will play in round 1.

With rookies we have to wait till round 1 to see who is playing

johnnytheboy1

Def: Far too strong here downgrade one of Bartel, Mcveigh or Mitchell to Hurn
Mids: Upgrade  Acres or Dumont to Dale Thomas
Rucks: Good unique pick in Pyke
Fwds:May have to downgrade one of those key forwards to fit Thomas in the Mids

Overall An unbalanced Lineup which is strong up Back and Fwd but weak where it counts and that is is in the mids give it a 6.5/10

ben_020285

Thanks for the comments guys.

Think you may be right in regards to my MID looking a bit too weak so I've downgraded Bartel to a DEF rookie and upgraded a MID rookie to Jobe Watson. Makes the side look heaps better and quite balanced. Funny how just one change can give a team a completely different look.

DEF: Hanley (MID), McVeigh (MID), Mitchell (MID), Suckling, Kolodjashnij, Fuller (Gardiner, McStay)

MID: Ablett, Pendlebury, Murphy, Beams, Watson, Morabito, Dumont, Garlett (MID) (Crouch, Hunt (DEF))

RUC: Naitanui, Pyke (Lobb, Brown (FWD))

FWD: Dangerfield (MID), Wingard (MID), Roughead, Dixon (RUC), Clark, Kersten (Taylor (MID), Kennedy-Harris)

$12,000 in the kitty.

Ringo

Much better ben - True effect will not be known until we see which rookies named in round 1 especially with 7 rookies to play each week. Need to piock the right ones to increase rapidly to allow upgrades. With this strategy I can see problems early but come home with a wet sail.

Good luck with it Ben.

Had a play around last night to try to fit a few more bargain priced players who were injured this year and are proven high SC scorers. Also thrown in a few POD's who showed enough to warrant their selection. Came up with this team:

DEF: Hanley (MID), Birchall, McKenzie, Grimes (MID), Suckling, Fuller (Gardiner, McStay)

MID: Ablett, Pendlebury, JPK, Murphy, D Beams, D Thomas, Morabito, Garlett (MID) (Crouch, Hunt (DEF))

RUC: Pyke, Lobbe (Brown (FWD), King)

FWD: Dangerfield (MID), Wingard (MID), Motlop, T Walker, M Clark, Kersten (L Taylor (MID), Kennedy-Harris)

$8,400 left in the kitty.

Thoughts on this team?

Interesting Team

Have you got a fall back plan if Walker not named for Round 1.  Despite the optimism I am doubtful myself.

Def: Sound choice of mid pricers - Do not think Gardiner or McStay will play round 1. may have to consider McDonald or similar.
Mids: - Do not mind with the number of teams I am seeing JPK could be a nice POD. Morabito will be good if he gets up for Round 1 and stays injury free,
Rucks: Pyke nice POD and as you know like Lobbe.
Fwds. Comment on Walker above. Like the choice of Motlop as a POD.  Averaged 112 for his last 7 games (taking out his sub game with injury), With the departures at Geelong he may step up further,
Overall soiund but need to ensure rookies are definitely playing from Round 1.

Backs - Like the Hanley pick, could really explode this year. Having all of Birchall, Mckenzie and Grimes is risky, would rather one more top premium in there.

Mids - JPK is a unique pick, could work, but think he will be just shy of a top 10 mid with points being split between him, jack, hanneberry, okeefe, mcveigh etc. Think your rookies are a little light on, see your saving cash but all bottom priced rookies could be missing out, all teams will likely need at least a few of tyson, beams, michie, martin, dunstan, sheed, ellis, not enough money in there to generate money.

Rucks - agree lobbe could break out, but think pyke is a bad pick, not cheap enough and cant see him pushing the top 5 or 6 rucks.

Fwd - Like wingard as a unique pick, will be a gun, whether its this year or next, motlop a good unique too, could play a greater role at the cats as the older players move on.

Overall - My biggest worry would be not enough cash in your rookies, I know its too early to make any final calls on any of them, but pretty much all the ones you have are close to bottom priced when I think there needs to be a bit more investment into higher picks or guys coming back from injury to generate the cash youll need for upgrades.

First crack of 2014:

DEF: S Thompson, Hanley, Birchall, Grimes (MID), Suckling, K Kolodjashnij (L McDonald (MID), Fuller)

MID: Ablett, Pendlebury, Murphy, D Beams, D Thomas, J Martin, Dunstan, Morabito (Taylor (MID), Hunt (DEF))

RUC: Lobbe, Grundy (Nankervis, Brown (FWD))

FWD: Dangerfield (MID), Wingard (MID), Roughead, S Motlop, M Clark, D Garlett (MID) (Honeychurch (MID), Kennedy-Harris)

$6,400 left.

Thoughts?

Nice POD here Ben:

Obviously rookies will be finalised with pre season form

Defenders - Nice POD that may pay off with none of the Top 3 in McVeigh, Bartel or Mitchell. Still a solid line without these.,
Mids: Solid - Morabito would be a watch and see proposition imo.
Rucks: Grundy worries me a bit because yet to play a full season but may pay off,
Fwds: Quite strong - Maybe would look at Dixon rather than Roghead if worried about Grundy and use Brown's DPP.

like sandi in our teams ringo and your reasoning for picking him ... all grundy needs to do is play til the byes and he should generate enough cash to be upgraded to a better performed ruck

i personally am not a fan of birchall yet i am grimes(injury free)

by having both murphy and beams that allows u to have both pendles and ablett, i dont mind it at all ...however i do not like the dunstan and morabito picks at this stage

like lobbe

do not like wingard at all ... i am starting to warm to roughy

quinny88

D: I would rather see at least one of Mitchell/McVeigh but solid otherwise.

M: Murphy could be a hit or miss only time will tell. Wouldn't think Morabito will play round 1.

R: Grundy not ready to score premium scores. You could be missing out on 20+ ppg here

F: expecting a drop off from Wingard. A lot of inflated scores from kicking late goals in close games. Think Garlett is vest bate

Few adjustments needed, rookies too tough to call until after Nab, and would reconsider a couple of premiums.

johnnytheboy1

Def: Solid Grimes could pay dividends for you this year as he is a good POD
Mids: No Problems here except maybe for Morabito see how he goes in the NAB CUP.
Rucks: I believe Grundy is ready to step up to the Elite level. Similar with Lobbe.
Fwds: Roughead to Dixon would be good as you would have a dpp link it would also save you a trade that you could use somewhere else

Overall an rating of  8/10

Looking strong already, I wouldn't like to be playing this team. Only thing i'll mention is are we really sold on Wingard at this price? Will get a lot more attention this year.
