I had him in 2010 and 2012. What happened? Was it simply a role change?

Just blame Ross Lyon..
He started tagging and that affected his scores at Freo. Moved to GC, and its hard to judge a player on just their first season at a new club...
...never know his scores might get back to where they were, never know Higgins might not get injured this year aswell :P

Broughton got midfield roles early in his career due to injuries. Then Fyfe, Barlow, Mundy, Crowley and co pushed him out.
Its as simple as that. He wasn't good enough to play infront of our current midfielders so got another role to help the team

Its not really Lyon's fault they just had better users of the ball to carry them out of defence. Broughtan struggled to adapt to Lyon's defensive gam plan and he was tried up forward a few times which he failed at so Lyon put him up for trade bait. When he got to the Gold Coast he was again pushed back by better users of the ball and was no longer given the freedom to do whatever he wanted and thus he became a lock down defender.
