There will be plenty of discounted and underpriced players for SuperCoach 2014, and I will assess each position for the best value. Here, the best bargain defenders have been profiled so you know who to look out for over the preseason.

Nathan Bock
2014 Predicted Price: $180-200k
2013 Average: 36
2013 Games: 2

Why is he cheap? Bock featured in the cheap as chips segment last year and after another injury interrupted year, he looms to be a bargain, again next year. Bock is very cheap as he only played two games, meaning he will be discounted and because he only averaged 36 from those two games, he will priced around the $200k region, making him a steal if he can stay on the park.

2014 Prediction - Bock has had his injury troubles over the past two years, but before this he was a premium SuperCoach defender, averaging 93 points back in 2011. Even though I don't expect him to get back to that level, he's very cheap and if he's fit come round one, you could pick him over a rookie defender, as Bock should score more than most rookies next year and be a good cash cow.

Sam Darley
2014 Predicted Price: $270-$280k
2013 Average: 4
2013 Games: 65

Why is he cheap? Darley is cheap because he only played four games in 2013. He wasn't awesome in those four games as well, only averaging 65 points, however, a move to the Western Bulldogs over the trade period has made him fantasy relevant.

2014 Prediction - Darley is not expensive and you would expect him to build on his 2013 average at his new club. A fresh start for Darley could be good and I would watch his preseason form, before making a decision on whether to start him or not.

Sam Docherty
2014 Predicted Price: $270-280k
2013 Average: 52
2013 Games: 13

Why is he cheap? Docherty is priced at a 52 average, however this as a result of him being used as the sun on numerous occasions throughout the year. But when you take out these sub-affected games out he averages 74 points, which is a decent return for a youngster.

2014 Prediction - Docherty is another at a new club in 2014. But I'm not certain he has as a spot in the Blue's best 22. He is underpriced though and if he is named in round one, you would have to at least consider him.

Matthew Suckling
2014 Predicted Price:
$280-300k
2013 Average: Not available
2013 Games: 0

Why is he cheap? Suckling suffered a horrific knee injury in a NAB Cup game, which ruled him out for the whole 2014 season. Because he didn't play a game, Suckling should get a big discount, making him one to consider down back.

2014 Prediction - He will be one of the most popular picked defenders next year if he's priced at around $300k. He has averaged 82 and 90 points, respectively in his last two years. It wouldn't be beyond him to return to his old form, but it may take him a while to get going. Nonetheless, he should still be picked in your team, as he is close to a premium defender and at that price, he is too cheap to ignore.

Beau Waters
2014 Predicted Price:
$350-360k
2013 Average: 82
2013 Games: 7

Why is he cheap? Waters is cheap as he only played seven games in 2013, so he will get a discount in 2014.

2014 Prediction - Durability has been Waters' issue in the past, as his body has continually broken down on him. But when Waters is on the park, he is great scorer, averaging 100 points in 2012. He is underpriced and if you think his body can hold up, he is well worth the punt at the price.

Dayze

Wasn't interested in Bock last year but with another year to heal and another price drop will b firmly on the watchlist.
Suckling very relevant aswell.
Ud wanna have a fair set to consider the other lads but with not too many standout defenders at the moment, and people hoping to skimp on there defence line again, some of these boys may come into consideration.

Enjoying the tight arse write ups Jroo keep em coming.
Good to see a bit of banter starting up on the forum.
God I miss the footy. Watching fox footy re runs on a Saturday night. What has my life come too...

Yeah Suckling close to locked in for me.
Thanks Speck, you've been great as well so far this pre season.

nrich102

You'd be pretty dumb to start with Bock.

EZA100

Definitely considering both Suckling and Waters (yes i know big risk), but for that price when they have proven good scores and averages.

Me too, Suckling is good and so is Waters as long as his body holds up.

Dayze

Why would it b dumb to consider starting with Bock?
Averaged 99, 83 and 93 in the three seasons before his broken leg.
Could start the season at 180k? Has far better job security than any other rookie priced defender.
Has had nearly two years to recover from his injury?
If bock were to get through a few NAB cup games then it would b dumb to not consider him.

Exactly! Even if he doesn't get back to the 90 average that he has before, somewhere around 75-80 would do for his price. Plus he has potential F/B DPP which could be handy when trading him out. What's there to lose?

Ricochet

Considering all three of Suckling, Waters and Bock... a fair bit of risk between them lol

My Chumps

I'm not touching Waters with a ten foot poll!

You'll think you're missing out when he's pumping hundreds for a few weeks, then he'll miss the next three leaving thousands with doughnuts and it won't look so bad :P
