Thoughts
Once again injury struck down this promising young player, young? It seems that he is but he turns 25 next year and has just 68 games to his name. Anyway, Grimes managed 15 games in 2013; worryingly that is his second highest tally for a season in his career. However, his price tag this year is mighty tempting despite his terrible injury record. Looking at the positives for Grimes, from rounds 1-5 in 2013 he averaged 21 possessions, 47% of which were contested, four tackles and 99.6 SC points. Then injury struck in round 6, which saw him sidelined until 15 to once again build up match fitness to end the year averaging 22, 30%, 3 and 92 over the final month in the aforementioned statistics. These stats show what he is capable of as well as the fact it was in one of the weakest midfields of the modern era. On the negatives, the list is much shorter but much more frequent, injuries. His price tag is the obvious drawcard and we all know what a clean and skilful player Grimes is, the question is can his body hold up?

Verdict
With the inclusion of Dom Tyson, Bernie Vince and Jack Watts to the midfield and the Paul Roos factor, I think Grimes, granted a good pre-season, could be a quality and perhaps unique selection.

Prediction
94

GoLions

Always liked Grimes. Will consider if he has a really good pre-season.

Plays to many shut down roles
He's no longer a defender, he'll be in the midfield, just as he began last year.

he had tagging roles in the midfield also

really interested to see how Roos uses him to good to be a tagger imo

Dayze

There most talented midfielder is there tagger.
Go figure. Melbourne logic.
Great player but is in the Higgins basket for mine. Too risky. The grimes family are made of paper m

Yeh, learning curve no doubt. Grimes is to classy of a player to tag. Just a matter of his body.

Why are you all so sure he'll play in the midfield from now on? They just recruited a heap of Mids plus Roos wants Watts chucked in there too. To be honest he'll play HBF or wing IMO.

Midfielders for Melbourne - N Jones, M Jones, Viney, Cross, Vince, Tyson, Watts, Michie, Trengove, Mckenzie, Toumpas

To me that's a whole lot of half decent Mids and it means Grimes doesn't need to be there anymore.

Vinny

I agree! ^ Isn't Mckenzie or someone their main tagger?

It's usually him but in some instances it's their whole midfield brigade. Forgot about winning against GC one time but would rather stop Ablett from getting a touch, hahahah.

I am 99% he'll play midfield he's been groomed as one for a couple of years and yes all the players are okay but Grimes has better ball winning ability and ball-use than virtually all of them. I'm simply a believer in having your best players in the midfield, I think he'd be wasted playing in defence. The Dees need him in their.

For real? That's the worst midfield in the league by a street!
Nath Jones is an honest hard worker, no star though.
Matt jones is average at best
Viney is a kid
Cross is in the jones mold but old and washed up
Vince is average
Tyson is a kid
Watts is a dudd and trying to make him a mid is a last yelp of hope to make something out of him
Don't even know who the hell Michie is
Trengove is average
Mackenzie works hard but pretty ordinary
Thou pas is a kid

Pretty sure grimes is still there equal best mid alongside jones and should start every single quarter in the center if Melbourne want to have any hope of winning games

Of course it's the worst midfield in the street, never said they'd be any good compared to the rest of the comp?

What I'm saying is Roos has already said that Watts will play midfield and Nath Jones is a lock in there already. Matt Jones played pretty good football in there and was one of Melbourne's best Mids last year. Viney/Tyson/Trengove/Toumpas are all still young so they have plenty of development left in them. Cross and Vince came across for polish and to try and add some hardened bodies in there. Cross is an extractor whereas Vince is good with the outside ball.

Grimes started his career off half back floating up into the midfield so I can't see him changing that role? Roos went out and got heaps of midfielders that he thought he could work with, so it means he can go back to where he played some good footy.

Think you were a but harsh in what you said about some players also. The players you all called kids will all be guns one day.

Ricochet

To be honest guys noone knows for sure where he'll play
Roos will shake up Melbourne and turn the club on its head if it means getting them all heading in his direction
Grimes is still a talent though and I think he'll thrive under Roos. He's on my watchlist
