HISTORY:

From the relatively untapped AFL recruiting area of Phillip Island in Victoria, Sam Docherty started playing local senior football as a 15 year-old.

His 2010 pre-season was hampered after he strained the quadratus lumberum muscle in his back, and as a result he missed selection in Gippsland Power's TAC Cup squad as an underage player.

He went on to represent the Power in 2011, and quickly became a star playing across half-back. He averaged more than 22 disposals per game (at 71.8% efficiency), and ranked second in the entire competition in mark from opposition kicks and rebound 50s.

His style of play was likened somewhat to Collingwood's Heath Shaw, Carlton's Chris Yarran and even the Lions' own Jed Adcock.

It therefore came as no surprise that he was selected in the backline of the 2011 TAC Cup Team of the Year. He also received the Gippsland Power's Most Disciplined Player and Trainer's Award.

Despite being selected in Victoria Country's initial squad, Docherty missed selection in the opening games of the 2011 AFL National Championships. But he earned a late call-up in time for Victoria Country's match against Western Australia, and seized the opportunity with a best-on-ground performance.

A late-season hip injury forced him to miss the final matches of the TAC Cup season, and meant he could not participate in the majority of fitness tests at the 2011 AFL Draft Combine at Etihad Stadium.

Sam's supreme skills had him at the forefront of every AFL recruiters' mind, and he was ultimately snapped up by the Lions with their second selection (Pick No.12 overall) at the 2011 AFL National Draft.

SUMMARY:

Sam Docherty is a rebounding defender who reads the play extremely well and uses the ball efficiently, especially by foot. Largely recognised for his torpedo-like right boot.

Managed just 13 games in 2013 because of injury and form, made his debut in round 4. He showed what he is capable of in the last 2 rounds scoring 85 and 90.

Carlton have made a trade offer to Brisbane for Docherty and it has been said he is very close to signing.

He will be priced as a midpricer after playing 13 games at an average of 50.2 somewhere in the range of $230,000 ?. Will he show enough in the Nab to be worth putting into the backline early in 2014.

FAN PLANNER PRICE 2014: $272,100 ( now a Carlton player )

A bit like Graham where his price might be too awkward to start him next year. Definitely has the potential to be a good fantasy scorer in the future but 2014 is a no at this stage

He scored alright, he will need to show some serious form in the Nab for me to put him in, but it's possible.

He should be priced a little over the price of a top 2 Nat pick, he might be a good D4,D5 ? until you can upgrade him.

Im gonna use those NEAFL stats in the profile Jukes, thanks mate.

No problem guys. Those NEAFL stats look delicious- if he can replicate close to that form with the blues he'll be a great pick. Don't read into third season breakout's that much, but seeing as it's his third season on an AFL list in 2014 could lock him in.

Colliwobblers

depends on the money i have available for that D4 and rooks available but good write up and good player, blues need him and will get him could be a breakout season, still risky pick but could be well rewarded.

He's better than half the best 22, just matters whether Mick thinks the same way.
