Yeah Ponting did average up over 60 back around 05-06 when he was in his prime. He really did have a poor finish to his career.

Yes, Sanga goes very underrated in terms of his batting ability. Arguably better than Sachin, but Id still take the little master.

Dont hear Chanderpaul's name mentioned much? Been world class for a very long time!

BB67th

I think Chanderpaul's technique is the reason that he is not always mentioned with Ponting, Lara, Kallis and Tendulkar. I think that's unfair though and he should be up there with the rest of them. Anyone that can get 10,000 runs, especially in a struggling team like the West Indies have been for the last 15 years, is an all-time great.

Noz

The fact that Chanderpaul was around during a Lara era was the reason you don't hear his name that often. Its very rare you get 2 players that both can challenge for the greatest West Indies batsman of all time in the same team at the same time. This is the same as Jayawardene for Sri Lanka.

I think the only argument Sachin lovers have is 16000 runs and 24 years of playing. It is a darn good point however. :P
Yes of course but imagine if some of the other greats played for that long :o

Plus i don't think anyone can say they played through 4 decades.  ;)
And all were at such a high level too. I think that is another important point to remember, the consistency. I don't have stats on his averages after 10, 25, 50, 100 tests, but there wouldn't be much difference, as opposed to someone like Ponting who hit 58 and finished under 52 five years later.

Tendulkar is probably good enough to keep going. He was good enough at 16, and he's just as good at 40.

Edit:
I think I've just made the "extend everyone's career to 200 tests" theory to promote the others blow up in all our faces. :P

tendulkar good enough to keep going? sorry just don't agree at all... he hasn't made a ton for years and has been in decline big time over the past 3 years

sachin is like ponting in that they should have retired but kept playing on causing their average to plummet and take some gloss of their statistics in the process - this is in contrast with someone like kallis who actually has seemed to get better and better later in his career (his average and strike rate have both improved in recent years - although he's had a rough run last couple tests)

i agree that kallis would have to be one of the most valuable players of all time - as you said (i think) his record with bat/ball/fielding speaks for itself - all time great.

I filled in for a mates club side once and scored 38 not out off over 100 balls (we were playing for the draw apparently).

My average is therefore infinity, which makes me an infinity x better batsmen then anyone mentioned in this thread.

Thanks for comin'.

Looks like it's settled, ele is the best that's ever been.

I don't think you're the only one with infinity as their average ;)

Course not, but it means I'm better than most professionals ;)

But they didn't, isn't that the point of bringing up a stat like that? Imagine if the Aussies had someone of that longevity and consistency currently in their side...

thing is, we probably would have, but we force all the old guys out just for laughs (ie katich) or if they have a bit of a lean run once they're a bit older it's goodbye

because of his "god" status sachin would have been allowed to play on until the day he died without any pressure for his spot, even though his productivity has nose dived in recent years, and has actually strongly contributed to a number of series losses (such as england in india)
