HAWTHORN has potentially pulled off another trade period coup by plucking St Kilda big man Ben McEvoy.

With the Hawks seemingly eyeing Brisbane's Billy Longer, the reigning premiers have nabbed McEvoy - the man considered a future leader at the Saints.

As part of the deal, St Kilda receives Hawk midfielder Shane Savage - who had seemed likely to head to Carlton - and the Hawks' first-round draft pick (selection 17 at this stage).

Ben McEvoy good around the ground when playing a kick behind the play. In the ruck his numbers are below average. Not all bad for the Saints

Good for both parties, I rate it higher for saints but. Pick 17 now days is as good as a top 5 10 years ago.

And looks like Saints are trying to load up on those top20 picks

Saints list manager Bains:

It's an interesting one. It was a difficult one for the club to arrive at. We're in a position to transition to rebuild

It came about pretty quickly. He wasn't put up by any stretch. Hawthorn put up an aggressive approach and attractive offer to Ben

Ben was still contracted, he's enormously loyal. A deal couldn't have taken place if he wasn't happy to move, he wasn't pushed

One of the strategic drivers was to end up with three picks inside 20. We feel that's the quickest way to transition our list

We haven't spoken to Billy Longer

We understand it's a short term issue with Ben's departure, it's something we need to address

It's our point in the cycle, we've come off success and we're building towards the future. We're in no denial where the list is at

(on Dal Santo): We've put a position to NM, they've put a position to us. There is a diff of opinion. We're not pushing blokes out

Ultimately, the club has put a position to North, if we can't get in what we feel is an adequate swap, we won't do the deal

There's a very big chance he'll still be at St Kilda, no doubt.

:o What the hell? This is official? ???

So, now Hickey has to do the ruck work?  ???

St Kilda, wat r u doin?  :o

So now Longer doesn't go to the Hawks... or does he still?

I'm confused, what the flower...  :-X

Cicjose

Yeah looks like Hickey is the number 1 ruck....

the Saints are rebuilding Nige the easiest way to do this is to load up on early draft picks

Oh yeah, I know that. I guess it's just happened so quickly haha.

You would think the Saints would make a play for another ruck now though, I know they're rebuilding, but Hickey can't do it alone... not yet anyway.

Ricochet

They haven't spoken to Longer yet, but they definitely will

Be crazy not to & reckon a better offer could be on the cards as well than Hawks offer?

JBs-Hawks

Kosi out of retirement to play 2nd ruck!

Or they could get Adam Pattison back to the club.

Ricochet

They should make a play for Currie

Nah, Currie prefers to waste another two years of his career at North.  :P

Dal for Delaney and Currie?  :o
