This budding Irish star imposed himself on the competition as he became more damaging with his forward thrusts kicking 16.9, next best was 7.3. Over the course of his previous three seasons he has been gradually increasing his impact on games and DT output. Over his last three seasons he has averaged 80, 83 and 86 respectively. He will commence season 2014 at the age of 25, he probably can't improve his insane best but his worst still trails his best by a country mile. This is the only the aspect of his game that has always held him back from genuine stardom and a permanent DT fixture. He is a very versatile player only having missed 2 games since round 15, 2010.

Admittedly, he did improve this fault this season whether it was through increase nous of the game, forward stints or a combination of the two. In 2011 and 2012 he recorded 8 games with a DT score below 70, this was reduced to 5 in 2013 (one of which was sub affected). Nothing huge but progress is progress.

Another fault of Hanley is his tendency to be suffocated by a tag.

  • round 4  - Sam Wright kept him to 62
  • round 8 - Baguley had a go at him but hardly restriced him to 96
  • round 10 - kept him to 35
  • round 22 - Cross has the job, 60
  • Round 23 - Hunt kept him to 71

Overall, 2013 was a terrific year by Hanley, winning Nigel Lappin Trophy (Club Champion Runner-Up). He managed to surpass 80 DT points in all but 7 games and tonned up in 5 games. Hanley again showed his ability to tear a game to shreds pumping out big scores of 124, 125 and 129. Averaged 87.6 without sub affected game.

So how will he go going forward?
Will he spend less time forward with Martin/McGuane pushing for forward time?
Personally I think he will play similar under Lappin as he was under Voss, and spend the majority of his game on the wing/half back racking it up with Sammy Mayes.

2014 Prediction:
I think he will continue his steady rise and buck the trnd of increasing his average by 3 point and will settle for 4  ;) - 90 points

ADEZ's Verdict:
The same as many players - depends upon DPP movements and discounts, you would be stupid not to consider Hanley

Colliwobblers

great write up, like to think i am not stupid, this guy high on my list for 2014.

Adamant

His inconsistency really turned me off him in the past, but I finally brought him in this year and he was great (got him in right before the run of 83, 125, 84, 99, 105 & 91).

Will consider again, but it all depends on DPP movements as you said. If guys like McVeigh and Mitchell get DPP, then I probably won't have room.

Master Q

Super write-up.

Considering Hanley. I think we're all looking for that defender that can take the next step, he could be the one.

Awesome write up ADEZ. You'd be crazy to not start with him.

Ricochet

Actually looking at his inconsistency as a positive. Wait for a poor score and jump on at a decreased price.
After all if your going for an overall rank, it doesn't matter if he has a down game or two, as long as his average is up where you want it at the end of the day.

Money

I really like Hanley for next year, had the tags this year and his tagged scores averaged about 70 and is adapting to it so hopefully can go 90+
