Swans Official Statement

THE Sydney Swans can confirm that an offer has been made to Lance Franklin

Oh yeah it's official alright, they got their celebrity FF back again - Capper - Lockett  - Franklin

Big Bad doesnt count??  ;)

no

he was great - loved him - when he wasnt being a bully, love him more now.

but know i mean the true celebrity - star power, bring people to the game, do lots of media type player.

Sydney did this I reckon more to deny GWS the opportunity to use him to market against them in Sydney than they did for any need of him as a player.

what say you ?

I see the logic behind it, but not sure about it.

If the Hawks want something for Buddy now they need to match the entire offer, inc the nine years.

Means if they dont Swans will pick him up for nothing, Hawks get a end 1st rnd compensation pick.

A lot riskier for the Hawks than a 5year $7m deal.

Not a fan of the swans abusing their extra salary cap space. They're supposed to be signing players within the salary cap and THEN using the extra 10% to distribute amongst the list, instead of using it like they currently are to get an extra gun player or two.

As for Buddy- to leave the club you've won two premierships at, including one 3 days ago, is pathetic.

My Chumps

Apparently Buddy's manager Liam Pickering approached Sydney after the 2012 Grand Final and said that Lance would like to play for the Swans. This has been brewing for a year.

Its hardly the Swans fault that this is how it is.

Every player gets the 10% bonus from the Swans and GWS.

Kurt Tippett gets 10% more, Setanta O'Hailpan got 10% more.

The underlying flaw behind the COLA system, which is inherently "our fault" is that the 10% increases exponentially for high amounts of money.

It can end up that Franklin's COLA amounts to Setanta's entire Salary, which is kind of unfair.

Basically, the AFL should change it so that COLA only applies to salaries under 500k p.a, which they should've done but they didnt forsee this being an issue

Wowwww....9 year deal. That is pretty stupid IMO. Franklin is 26 as is, and the contract ends when he is 35.

I reckon he will not be that great once he hits 31. :-\

Quoting of afl.com here:

Quote"The only longer-term contract in recent memory is the 10-year deal the Brisbane Bears offered Alastair Lynch to entice him from Fitzroy at the end of 1993.

Lynch completed that contract and even extended his stay at the Gabba for a further season, retiring at the end of 2004 at 36."

It's happened before and worked

I just cannot see Buddy playing older than 32. :P

JBs-Hawks
