Claye Beams: Brisbane Lions

Position: Midfielder
Price: ~$200-250,000 Possible 30% Discount
Junior Club: Labrador

2012
Games: 8
Average: 65

2013
Games:2
Average: 45
Scores: 47, 44
(Started as Sub)

Summary: Claye was starting to cement himself in the Lions 22 at the start of the season, when he was struck down with injury. Claye seems to be injury prone, and has never played more than 8 games in a season at AFL level, getting injured in 2011, 2012 and 2013 :(.

Verdict: You'd be crazy to not consider him. Breakout year contender, but could kill you. He also can tag occasionally :(

Richo's Predicted Average: 70 IF he has an injury free season.

#1
Rich thats a low average for an injury free season, the year before last he was unsubbed for the last 5 games and had an average of around 85! Plus he scored that 47 in round 1 in one quarter! Problem is though that he won't have an injury free season

fertalong

I've had him in my sights since his season ending injury in 2013. Let's just wait and see if he manages to get any presason and NAB cup games in.

pommyadam

while he will be undervalued for that average, doesn't beat those premo rookies (see Wines/Jaeger this year, and Martin/draftees next year) and will be more expensive too

may hop on IF he scores well in preseason, but not a nailed on for me (especially if the new coach plays Rocky midfield too - Rich, Moloney, Raines, Rocky, Redden and others in there)

Jukes

Was looking at him for 2013 but an average NAB cup ruled him out of my side. Lots of talent, the discount should almost guarantee him a spot in my side, assuming he has a solid and healthy NAB cup campaign.

henry

He is rated higher than his brother by some people in the industry, at least he was last year  :o.

Will be very cheap, definitely considering as a midpriced m5, worked pretty well with moloney this year until he got injured.

Same mate. So much potential here and you'd think he would be too old for the vest now with new youngsters coming through the side next year.

eg6914

Well, with the retirement of Black Claye should see much greater opportunities in 2014, could well and truly sneak into my team next year!

timmyparso

Does anyone know whether he will be fit for round 1? Knees are typically 12 months and he was 3 games into the season when he injured it.

Memphistopheles

No thanks for next season.

I have a rule now - don't pick ACL or bad leg break players until the season following their return.

I can't think of anyone who's really hit the ground running and scoring well the season after they did one of these injuries.

Lenny Hayes, Barlow?

But I agree, Claye isn't on my radar at all.

Barlow took an extra year before he was playing pain free

Yeah I know, but Memph said he can't think of anyone who scored well the following season after coming off a serious injury.

When Barlow returned in 2011 after breaking his leg, he scored 98, 25 (in a quarter), 98, 103, 110, 117, 88, 87 and 47 in his 9 games. Pretty solid.

Ricochet

Ah ok yeh i was thinking more in terms of he only played 9 games so wasn't really a good pick. But yeh agree he scored very well considering

They are the best couple of examples but neither was fantasy relevant in their return season from injury.

Hayes averaged 108 DT the year before he went down and 95 the year of his return.

Barlow averaged 85 the year of his return. Yes it included vests but you can't ignore that as you could well expect players coming off similar injuries to also have to deal with vests.

He then only averaged 96 the following year before finally bouncing back to true fantasy relevant in 2013 with a 104 avg.

You've helped illustrate my point very nicely though - thanks :D
