#180
Dayle Garlett

Swan Districts 9/1/94 180cm/78kg

Drafted: Round 2, Pick 38 Hawthorn

2012 WAFL Senior Ave: 76.0
2013 WAFL Senior Ave: 84.2

Profile

Most of us are familiar with the Dayle Garlett story - considered a first round prospect in the 2012 draft, behavioural issues saw him snubbed by every team in the comp. Depending on where you stand he was either an immature goose or the victim of an AFL system that wants young players to be robots. To his credit, Dayle persevered in the WAFL and has continued to improve as a footballer. In 2013 he kicked an impressive 48.25 for Swan Districts while averaging 15.9 disposals, 5.9 marks and 1.6 tackles. Garlett's DT scores for the year present a nauseating rollercoaster of inconsistency - 59, 91, 63, 151, 131, 84, 129, 65, 82, 31, 61, 79, 124, 91, 81, 100, 48, 73 and 58.

It appears a number of clubs are genuinely interested in him this time around, but understandably there are still question marks about his ability to adapt to the AFL environment and what his performances will be like if/when he gets the opportunity.

SC Paige: Since knocking back the opportunity to play VFL football for a range of clubs, Garlett returned to WA to continue to play for Swan Districts in the WAFL, and his form, fitness and application to his football over the past few months has been nothing short of astonishing. He is quite literally, taking the WAFL by the throat. The reformed Garlett has started to earn the trust back of the football world; he no longer drinks, smokes, parties late and has moved away from the area of which he was living, including his circle of friends and has settled down his girlfriend who is believed to be the backbone of Garlett's turnaround. As such, Garlett's football has benefited. He is putting in long hours in the gym and on the track, diligent in his preparation and recovery, and the selfishness and stubbornness that once buoyed him, is now gone.

Bound For Glory: His form this year warrants early selection, but chances are if he does get drafted, it'll be later on to a team who are willing to bite the bullet. Garlett is simply a superb kick of the ball. He hits targets precisely, even when he's sprinting. He only needs two steps to slow down when running at full tilt to hit a target. One impressive part of his game is that he's like a creative midfielder in soccer. When he's in space, he has the vision, the intelligence and the execution to launch a risky ball into space so his team mate can run onto it. Most players can't do that, but when he does it, it breaks the game open as he utilises the space.

Knightmare (BigFooty): Quality midfielder who can sneak forward and have an impact. Garlett has game-breaking pace and uses it to advantage with regularity and is willing to take running bounces and take the ball as far as the opposition let him. Decision making excellent and even when pressured or in congestion still makes the right decision most of the time. Finishing around goal good. Left footer with some nice penetration and hurt factor on his kick and hits his targets easily over a variety of distances. Can also use his right boot and use it well. Has the ability to really hit the scoreboard and be very damaging with the influence he can have on some games. Also when the ball hits the ground I like how he immediately has that quickness of mind and body to get to the ball quicker than everyone and quickly get the ball onto hit boot for a goal. Garlett is also very capable of winning his own ball and playing on the ball and not just outside.

Fantasy Prospects

Garlett could be the best pick of 2014 or a disaster, who really knows? He seems more than capable of putting in big scores if things go his way. I'd like to see some better tackling numbers because he won't be kicking bags of goals like in the WAFL. You'd be brave to pick him but it might turn out you'd be stupid not too...

Nice write up on Garlett Mr.Craig,

Think he could be a very wise decision next year, even at the cost of some inconsistency. His ceiling is massive which I really like, and looks like he's ready to go.

How far down the draft to you think he'll land? Any chance at Collingwood for Pick #40? Geez I'd love to have him and two guns at pick #6 and #10.

DRAFT UPDATE

Emma Quayle has suggested today that one of the mainstays of the top 5 draft picks this year, could fall out of the top 5 as Tasmanian Kade Kolodjashnij looms as a big smokey at pick 5 to the Gold Coast.

Collingwood and West Coast have all but tied up a deal that'll see Collingwood gain pick 6 and 40 from West Coast, whilst the Eagles will gain pick 11 and 27 from the Pies.

As the Giants have now traded for Pick 2, and given away pick 9, and the Pies holding two top 10 picks, the draft is looming as follows:

Christian Salem has become of serious interest to the Pies according to the SEN website, whilst Tasmanian Kade Kolodjashnij, this years best bona fide rebounding defender has shot up into pick 5 calculations at the Suns.

Emma Quayle has suggested that possibly lightening might strike twice with the Pies, who could yet land a second steal of the draft with suggestions that dual Norwood premiership player, James Aish could slip into their hands at pick 6.

GWS won't overlook Tom Boyd, and SOS has made no secret his admiration for Josh Kelly.

The Saints could take Matt Scharenberg who is a Goddard-type player, and brings immediate class, versatility and height to otherwise a small(ish) side. They will have three picks in the first round, meaning grabbing a tall player and then stocking up on mids could be the path they go down.

Jack Billings is just about certain to fall into the Bulldogs laps at pick 4, however he could fall either way to the Saints or as far as pick 6.

Northern Knights pair Marcus Bontempelli and Ben Lennon are two of the classier players in this years draft, and both could find themselves being selected back-to-back at picks 6 to Collingwood or 7 to Brisbane.

Luke McDonald is locked in at pick 8, but the Demons could go down one of two paths given an array of varying scenarios.

Ben Lennon is tipped to be at pick 9, however the Dees could opt for Patrick Dangerfield clone, Nathan Freeman or his Sandringham teammate Christian Salem.

Dom Sheed is expected to be available at pick 11 for the Eagles, who would've been paying overs at pick 6 for Sheed, regardless.

The current first round could look something like this.

1: GWS - Tom Boyd
2: GWS - Josh Kelly
3: STK - Matt Scharenberg
4: WBD - Jack Billings
5: GCS - Kade Kolodjashnij
6: COL - James Aish
7: BRI - Marcus Bontempelli
8: NTM - Luke McDonald
9: MEL - Ben Lennon
10: COL - Nathan Freeman
11: WCE - Dom Sheed
12: RIC - Christian Salem
13: CAR - Cameron McCarthy
14: GCS - Matt Crouch
15: SYD - Darcy Gardiner
16: GEE - Lewis Taylor
17: FRE - Blake Acres
18: STK - Trent Dumont
19: STK - Luke Dunstan
20: BRI - Billy Hartung

Mr.Craig

Interesting thoughts by Quayle. I've also been a firm believer that Billings is worthy of pick 4.

I find it hard to swallow that Richmond would take Salem ahead of Crouch and I'd be quite surprised to see McCarthy go that early, but she knows more than I do.

If Collingwood get Aish/Freeman and St Kilda get Shaz/Dumont/Dunstan they will have a freaking orgasm.

I think he could go anywhere from about 35 to rookie draft. So yes, more than possible he'd be available at 40.

I'd orgasm if we got Crouch, I probably prefer him to Salem.

There is very strong mail coming through that St Kilda will draft Dayle Garlett with one of their second round picks at 24 or 25.

Interesting...

Jukes

>Grundy slips to Pies at 17 even though he should be top 5
>Aish slips to Pies at 6 even though he should be top 3

How do Collingwood keep doing this? Seedsman, Thomas, Aish, Martin, Beams and Pendles will be a flowering elite midfield in a few years.

We already have an elite midfield, just means instead of us weakening we'll get even better. Pendles, Beams and Martin with Aish and Seedsman on the outside of the pack. I'd love to see that.

I've got a bunch of work to do this arvo but I should get to it tonight or tomorrow night.

Mr.Craig

Jydon Neagle

Murray Bushrangers 29/8/94 184cm/77kg

2013 TAC Ave: 68.2
2013 VFL Ave: 12

Profile

Neagle is a medium forward for the Bushrangers who endured a tough 2012 which saw him have to deal with injuries, the tragic death of his father Merv along with being overlooked in the draft. To his credit Jydon came back strongly this year, playing 11 games in the TAC as an over-ager. He averaged 14.2 disposals, 4.8 marks, 1.9 tackles and 1.5 goals a game for scores of 68, 99, 65, 50, 50, 52, 86, 91, 85, 55, 50. Neagle played two games for Essendon's VFL side but had no impact, scoring 15 and 9. He had a more productive Under 18 Championships, kicking 10.6 and averaging 12 touches (70.6 DT).

Very little has been written about Neagle's draft prospects and with Essendon having less picks available this year it may reduce the possibility of him being taken as a father/son. It should also be noted that Neagle was not invited to the national combine which suggests there is limited interest outside of Essendon. Regardless of this, he certainly has some skills and it wouldn't shock me if he was indeed selected at some point.

Bound For Glory: The nuggety forward from the Bushrangers is having a second crack at the draft this year after injuries curtailed his season last year. Neagle is smaller than most key forwards but has a big frame and is a very good mark, taking 11 contested marks from seven games and averaging 5.1 marks in total. He is very consistent and usually chimes in with two or three goals per game, helped out by his accurate goalkicking (15.9 for the season). Neagle is a confident player and backs himself to do the job which is a trait you want in a forward.

Fantasy Prospects

Despite a few good scores in the TAC I don't think there's much to suggest he'll be a legitimate pick in 2014.

Thanks MC ... didn't think he would be viable this year because of injury, was curious tho as he said he would do everything he could to wear a Bombers jumper because that's what his father would have wanted.

James Aish at the Pies would really pee me right off! Bad enough my boy Benny was stolen last year in the biggest steal ever @ 19

Hopefully a bit of luck (Finally) for the Crows with Dayle lasting till #23  ;D
