Mr.Craig

A new article has been added to the Tom Boyd profile talking about his attempts to play in the TAC grand final this week. It also mentions that Mitch Honeychurch may return after a layoff due to a hamstring injury.

Well done Mr C.

How about WA boy Dom Sheed?

I almost put him up yesterday. He'll be coming soon. ;)

Dominic Sheed

Subiaco 10/4/95 184cm/83kg

Drafted: Round 1, Pick 11 West Coast

2012 WAFL Colts Ave: 85
2012 WAFL Seniors Ave: 70.6

2013 WAFL Seniors Ave: 53.7

Profile

Sheed is a classy midfielder from WA who took the 2013 Under 18 Championships by storm, averaging 27.7 disposals and 103.7 DT from his four games and was named the Larke medallist as the best Division 1 player along with receiving All Australian honours. He finished with the equal fourth most clearances for the carnival. Sadly he also broke his collarbone which has put a dent in his preparations for 2014 but Sheed is still considered by most as a first round or possibly even Top 10 draft selection. While Dom's leg speed has been identified as a weakness, his endurance certainly isn't and he's shown the ability to cover 13km in games with ease. While the draft pool is filled with midfield prospects, there aren't many who possess his combination of clearances, contested possessions, workrate and flexibility. Sheed had a taste of seniors action in the WAFL during 2012 and again this year. He played four games prior to his injury with scores of 56, 65, 44 and 50.

SC Paige: Sheed is high production midfielder, easily shakes a tag, has the endurance and football smarts to run all day, and accumulates an elite number of possessions, whilst averaging 13kms a match throughout the championships.  Sheed is a well-balanced midfielder; he can play as a ball-winning extractor, burrowed under the packs, laying tackles and clearing the ball from congestion, or as a free-wheeling, offensive midfielder, propelling his team forward. In attack, he kicks goals from all angles, none better than outside 50 off a step or on the run. In defence he is cool, calm and collected and plays the percentages, finding targets with ease - he is an unforgiving footballer.

Bound For Glory: While his form has been fantastic this year there are whispers that he will fall much lower than many phantom drafters have him projecting, due to a lack of speed and a tendency to be one paced. This isn't a major problem as he rarely gets caught but he doesn't have the explosiveness to break away from the contest. To offset his lack of athleticism, Sheed is an elite endurance runner. Sheed seems to be everywhere and is always buzzing around the contest. Sheed is dominant at the centre bounces, winning clearances with ease, but he then follows the ball forward or pushes hard defensively to get in the hole in front of the forwards.

Callum Twomey: Medium midfielder who is a prolific ball winner. His work rate is excellent as is his ability to win his own ball.  Makes very good decisions either by hand or on his preferred left foot. Can play outside or inside and is very good around stoppages. Hunts the ball at the packs and kicks it long. Sheed isn't especially quick but has a mature physique and knows his way around the stoppages. Averaged 28 disposals and six clearances during the NAB AFL Under 18 Championships. Winner of the Larke Medal and All-Australian honours. Graduate of the AIS-AFL Academy in 2013.

Knightmare (BigFooty): Sheed is a damaging user of the footy by both hand and foot and has more time to use it than the next player making the correct decisions consistently hitting his targets. To finish off his game he also is excellent when he pushes forward because 1v1 he protects the drop zone like a natural forward and has above average ability overhead with his finishing ability also excellent giving him some potential to rest forward which is a big bonus. He's also capable playing down back as required so he gives you options not looking out of place anywhere. The main criticism by some recruiters on Sheed is that he is "one paced" but as a player who rarely gets caught and executes so well under pressure I wouldn't concern myself with that.

Fantasy Prospects

Depending on where he goes I'd imagine Dom will get opportunities in 2014. From a scoring perspective you shouldn't expect the world from him but I think he'll most likely prove to be a decent pick. Considering his injury there may be some concerns about his ability to be physically prepared so it would pay to closely track how his pre season pans out.

Matthew Scharenberg

Glenelg 18/9/95 190cm/89kg

Drafted: Round 1, Pick 6 Collingwood

2012 SANFL U/18 Ave: 91.5
2012 SANFL Reserves Ave: 74.6
2012 SANFL Seniors Ave: 61.5

2013 SANFL Reserves Ave: 71.0
2013 SANFL Seniors Ave: 55.0

Profile

Depending on who you ask Scharenberg is the best player in the draft or he's highly overrated and won't make it at the elite level. My opinion is somewhere in the middle, he's certainly shown enough as a junior to suggest he'll be a solid contributor but it may take time for him to find a role that best suits his skills. An excellent Under 18 Champs saw him improve his draft stocks and gain All Australian selection for the second year running. From his 5 games Matt averaged 21.6 touches, 6.4 marks and 1 tackle per game (DT Ave: 83.6). He also had the highest number of rebound 50's of anyone at the carnival with a total of 26. Scharenberg made his SANFL senior debut as a 16 year old and this year for Glenelg he has played four games for scores of 87, 46, 36, 51 and two reserve games (72, 70).

Chris25 (BigFooty): I would personally consider Scharenberg the best player in the draft. I think he does get a little underrated because people don't know exactly what he'll be at the next level, probably in part due to similar sized players in the past. Is he a midfielder? A key position player? A flanker? I would suggest he is all these things, much in the same way that Brendan Goddard can fill any number of roles. I think he'll start off on a half back flank, pushing up to a wing as an outside midfielder. But with a couple of years under his belt, he'll be able to offer a marking target at CHF or an attacking option from CHB.

Bound For Glory: In a draft year where most players are under six foot, Scharenberg, along with Marcus Bontempelli, are the exceptions to the rule. Before the Under 18s Championships, Scharenberg was rated as a first round pick, potentially as high as five. An impressive Championships saw him rally into contention for the number one selection by Greater Western Sydney. In terms of style while down back, Matt Scharenberg reminds me of Ben Reid because he has a reasonably long, penetrating kick compared to other draftees and while his kicking isn't elite, it is more than sound. Scharenberg also has good athleticism and strength without being elite which is why he is such as interesting selection.

SC Paige: Scharenberg is a rare talent, hailing from an elite baseball background (once playing in the junior Australian team) - awareness, vision and poise are key attributes that allow Scharenberg to look as though he has all the time in the world with ball in hand. He often plays the game on his own terms, and is one of the classiest players in this year's crop.

Callum Twomey: Is Scharenberg a defender? A forward? Or will he end up a midfielder? For most it doesn't matter - he's just a really good player and one who is set to deliver immediately at AFL level. The South Australian played mainly in defence through the carnival but racked up big numbers, averaging 21 disposals. It wouldn't surprise if he's No.1 pick if the Giants, Demons or Bulldogs think he fits their needs.

Fantasy Prospects

If Scharenberg does indeed go in the top 3 picks then you'd be looking at paying around 180k for him. Obviously coaches will try to look for cheaper alternatives who'll have a similar or better scoring/JS potential but if they don't materialise then Matt make come into calculations. Personally I don't think I'll consider him for a mid spot but if he gets back eligibility I might consider him for a position there.

Will be very interesting to see how the Schaz goes, but I see him as a very Birchall-esque player and think he'll do well - I'm one of the guys that is backing him to be a gun. ;)

Nice write-up Mr. C!

Mr.Craig

I hope he behaves himself tomorrow on his 18th. :P

Nige

Big fan of both Benny Lennon and Schaz. Nice stuff Craig.  :D

Nige

Just checked out Knightmare's (massive fan of his work) phantom draft of BigFooty.

He's got Salem going to the Tiges and Dunstan... going to the Hawks at 17.  :o

Also has Jonno Marsh to the Cats at 32 and Tsitas at 34 to the Hawks.

Honestly, if the Hawks did get both Dunstan and Tsitas, that would be crazy.

JBs-Hawks

Nige

Yeah, some interesting choices, but it's great to see where different people think different players will go.

Mr.Craig

I think Knightmare has positioned his list more as a power ranking based on his personal opinion rather than trying to be an accurate assessment of where players will actually go.

Nige

Yeah, I read it back and that seems to be the case.
