I was there that day, got a bit ugly. Sav kicked 6 goals from 7 touches.

That was last century. All I care about is this current year, which I think we did a bit better ;)

hahah checked the 1997 season out (I was two years old then) and we beat Geelong in our third game ever, convincingly I might add (Geelong went on to finish 2nd on the ladder). The very next week we went on to beat the Crows in the first showdown ever (as we all know the Crows went on to win).

Overall we finished 9th out of 16th in our inaugural season. I have to say reading it made me very proud to be a Port Adelaide Supporter. No other team could ever do that well in their opening season, this are the signs of a champion club. Compare that to Freo, Brisbane Bears, GCS & GWS. I can easily say for any team in the modern game we became acclimate to the AFL the quickest.

Might I add we only fell short of the top 8 by percentage. After reading this I can unequivocally state, Port are the best team in the AFL, maybe not at the moment but overall only us and the Crows have never obtained the Wooden Spoon (but that's SA football for you, our playing styles don't lose)

Mailman the 2nd

Port Adelaide has been a team for over a hundred years, you can't compare that to GWS or Gc etc.

Um I said your first game not season
Yeah but you can't judge a team based off a single game let alone Port's first game due to the extenuating circumstances -the entirety of the 1997 season- and the fact although Collingwood won the match we still finished ahead of them on the ladder and thrashed them 111-56 later that very same year -round 16-. I'm being apathetic so don't take any of this personally and I know you were joking but I still don't understand the relevance of your first comment haha.

@Mailman the 2nd that is a fair point, Port also had a lot of support -not that GWS & GCS haven't had a showerload but Port did get it a lot better with experienced players being provided to them from other clubs and the intensity and standards of football players weren't as competitive back then-. GCS already look like they have started the long road to development and will be pushing for the top 8 within the next 3-5 years (could even be the surprise packet in two years). Highly unlikely they'll make it next season but it would be an incredible sight to watch their list is fantastic in terms of young talents and the fact they have to play mostly inexperienced players will pay off eventually.

okay I just read through my previous comment and understand the reference. I forgot that I had posted that hahah next time click the 'quote button' above the desired post you want to comment on and preferably put the specific passage from the aforementioned comment in bold so it's unambiguous. hahaha I just thought you were gratuitously stating that we'd lost our first game in AFL history and I was wondering what the relevance was hahaha  :) But yeah from now on do that and I'll make it easier for all parties involved  :D

hahaha nah I hate Collingwood because my best friend goes for them and I hate Essendon because my Dad supports them hahaha like I said I had no previous knowledge of round 1 1997 because I would of only been on the verge (still a 1 year old) of turning two haha

Mailman the 2nd

haha I'm not saying Port are a bad team, they adapted quite well from when they entered the AFL in 1997 to win in 04 and going to 07.

Just keeping you honest ;) the new teams certainly did need a bit of help to get on their feet no doubt
