Not too much of a surprise. Hope he gets picked up.

Ringo

Awaiting some confirmation Strikes - Surely though he would want the Lions to try and get to a club of his choice rather than rely on being picked up in the National Draft as no guarantee he will get picked up by either South Australian club.

No surprise that he wants out given the injury interrupted seasons he has had and then a number of players apparently leaping over him.

Lions get all the high draft picks then they flowering disappear or want out

Not even confident with Mayes. by the looks he could be a homesick player as well. never looked happy when he got drafted on the night

Ringo

Not having a coach is not helping with retention.

Unsigned players at the moment are Karnezis (who will be traded) Polec, Polkinghorne, Yeo, Longer and Docherty. Most are home at the moment with family so that may be the deciding factor although Yeo is rumoured close to signing.

As I have posted previously we really have to deal with the go home factor being a non AFL state but have done reasonably week to date retaining them. However this may now be difficult as there is no coach to speak with them. Reviews are now being completed as well.

It's unfair on the Lions I think (As well as GC and to a lesser extent the Sydny teams). Brisbane/GC are 20 hours drive from Melboune, so there will be many players getting home sick. Brisbane should get more money!!

Ringo

You have to remember when players are drafted they are virtually straight out of school and are moved from family environment. Lions through welfare officer Manny Lynch do their best to try and get that overcome through flying Family members up for debut games and at other times through the season and having 3/4 players share a house together so they can look out for each other.

Who would drive from QLD to Melbourne? No one. And I think every club has to work hard to build a culture that makes players want to stay. For the first time, despite the on-field success, it appears as though Port are building a good club culture and combined with on-field success, player retention will stay high. If a club isn't retaining players, largely I think it is either the player is a home boy (which I would think would be some what apparent) or the club culture isn't right.

The players in question probably can't believe how many QLD people voted for Clive Palmer and want out!
Port will take Polec. I remember the wraps on him being quite high. Dazza will get his body right ;)

[/quote] Wes I know both SA Clubs would take Polec but my point is shouldn't Polec be encouraging the club to do the deal so he does not have to go into the draft and risk ending up elsewhere. Still hgave been unable to confirm whether or bot he has walked out on the club though.

they should not get more money, thats completely unfair.

look at Port Adelaide they have created a great culture their and they have guys like Boak who rejected offers from one of the star teams in the comp for more money and playing where he orginally came from (gellong)

the west coast teams also have many eastern state players and they retain most of them, the issue is not just because they are non victorian.

Docherty: you screwed him around playing him in the 2s, giving him a go letting him shine than green vesting and dropping him.

Polec: yeah injury prone, but i feel other clubs would give him more of a chance.

longer: has leuneberger a young number 1 ruck in front of him, If i was him i would request a trade as I wouldnt want to be second fiddle for most of my career.

you have the whole issue of kicking ou the coach with no replacement, going hard for that flag in the fevola days which killed the club and from the looks of it its not the type of organisation I would like to be involved in. The go home factor is relevant but in most cases its not the sole reason, its just an easy excuse. no player will come out and see they dont like the direction the club is going in.

guys left melburne and these were victorian players, there is no difference just a different excuse.

Whilst I agree with a lot of what you say Holz there is still one big difference in that AFL is still the Number 3 winter sport in Queensland and NSW and as such does not get the exposure that you get in Southern States. AFL in Newspapers is usually on the 5th back page compared to the Southern States where it is back page.
So when you have youngsters that come to Qld and NSW they are often bewildered as to where the AFL coverage is.
I still think Sydney has the extra cost of living allowance which was taken away from Brisbane in 2005.

Regarding the club most clubs go through a period of instability at Board level as a result of decisions made and whilst not good at the time come out the other side. Sorry the AFL does not like Interstate clubs and this is obvious as they have continually deferred the request for Financial Assistance from the Lions whilst propping up Victorian clubs. If the AFL is not careful both clubs in Qld will fold and it will be the AFL's fault not the club. Do not think you southern states realise how difficult it is to get sponsors and make profits when you are not the dominant sport in the winter sports market.

Basically I think the go home factor raises it's head when club is not doing as well.

I will also point out that with the exception of Karnezis a lot of players when dropped to the NEAFL did not shine. Karnezis kept performing and the main reason he was not promoted was that he had already announced he wanted the trade back.  Polec only received votes in best 6 on ground in the NEAFL 3 times so that says something.

Hearing Mayes may also be wishing to return home and you can not argue he has been screwed around.

Agree with your assessment of Docherty as he was screwed,

Regarding Longer with the change in sub role expect him to form a joint ruck with Berger,  He was being used as a forward in the NEAFL to increase his skills and will be disappointed if he goes. Interestingly when they were used in the first game when Berger returned Brisbane looked good with Berger kicking the first 2 goals as forward after taking good marks.  Why Voss did not persevere with the development of this combo is beyond me as it would have assisted our go forward and additional avenue to goals apart from Brown.

Just trying to explain why Qld is a little different to other states.

Confirmation that Polec has asked to be traded and also that we will not be giving him away for nothing either.

Will join karnezis in the trade talks so hope we get something decent in return.  Hearing reports that Crameri may be lured to the sunshine state.
