I actually agree with Holz here, and I can be a stickler for grammar sometimes.

If you're going to dedicate your time to something, it's much more beneficial for both parties to look at and judge what the person's actually saying, rather than whether or not they've spelt "you're" correctly.

Holz isn't saying that grammar isn't important.

Totally agreed.

I do quite substantial written documents at uni where I focus on my sentence structure and grammar extensively. Nothing showers me more when I make a FF post where I'm blazing away at a massive post (which I don't care to proof read), and the one mistake I make gets pulled up.

Strictly on the platforms of chat or a forum, I actually find pulling such things up quite rude. Unless it's totally necessary.
Agree 100% - Like Purps do not pay much attention at all when posting in forums etc as I think it is not necessary to get the point across whereas when writing papers, reports and reviews etc I pay strict attention to grammar and spelling often proof reading a couple of times to be sure.

Horses for Courses I say

I started this whole debate with my would've, could've, should've post... annoys the crap out of me... but I don't pick people up on it here as FF is a forum and people, usually adults, don't come on here for a grammar or spelling lesson but to get their POV across or seek advice.
This was an appropriate thread to bring it up.
I agree with Holz, content is important. The most important of the two on FF.
Spelling and grammar are important too as if posts are long or badly worded I won't bother too much with them.
Peevs me off probably more than most as I am a teacher. If people know how to spell and word things properly then they should.
We teach surface features (spelling, punctuation and grammar) and deeper features (description and content). Good writers need both.
I won't give anyone a lecture or hard time for saying "should of" but I will think they're uneducated.

LOL, clearly a GL & Nige vs everyone else debate going on here :P

FWIW incorrect grammar annoys me too, but not to the extent that I need to correct and call people out on it. I think it's pretty condescending when someone does that to someone else

I do think however that it does subconsciously go towards the way one member views another, rightly or wrongly

So it puts me as an intelligent human being rather then a spell checking program.

This however, is just wrong. Cue the Ned Stark Meme, but one does not simply be intelligent and have bad grammar

I'm pretty sure his issue is being grouped with Nige.

better watch out RD, if a mod comes on here you might get banned. Saying stuff like that is uncalled for. Talk about landing a low blow.
