Keeping 6 trades for finals next year. Putting in as rule number1

Slashers

But, but, but, what if this carnage doesn't happen again... ::)

Diesels Pups

Yep was going to make a similar post. Tried to have 6 trades going into finals last couple of years and it's worked well. This year i went for it cause of mistakes early in the year and it's come back to bite me on the bum. No trades going into prelim week and all this carnage. White flag is up and looking forward to next year. :'(

If it's only a league win you're after then horde the trades, I personally get more satisfaction with my overall ranking, and there's no way one could horde trades and hope for high finish.

Last year i burnt my trades by the end of the bye's ...  won 4/5 leagues and finished about 8,500... this tried to save at least 2 trades by finals, but the carnage got to me and used the last trade week 1 of finals...!!

Best laid plans never work, just get the best team possible with backup and pray for luck...!!!

Ricochet

Two ways to go about it, either keep your trades or upgrade your bench early.

Hope you are in one of my leagues with that as rule number one.

Rule number one HAS to be make the final 8.

Silly doc, if you're last placed and have all your trades at finals time they give you a sweet spoon and a helmet to wear in public! You clearly didn't get the memo...

Hmmn I knew I did something wrong this year  :-[

Another word of warning - if you concentrate on too many leagues, you'll go crazy!!   :o

And blow your trades.  >:(

Had intended to have 6 trades available for finals but carnage cut that down. Also if you are in with a chance at the $50k you will use trades to try and stay up there. As Doc says if you do not make the 8 no point in having trades available. I had 2 at start of finals and have now used both to ensure I made the prelim finals as i was in 4 KO finals last week. Won them all.
If in more than one League do as I did concentrate on your main league and the rest will take care of themselves. (Have now made 5 prelims).

Not sure about that last statement Rrrringo.

Which league is your main league? Is it a cash one? Is it work? Is it mates? Is it FF?

If your 'main' one is a weaker league, then you could easily miss out on finals in others.

My ego will simply not tolerate mediocrity, hence the need to win ALL leagues.

Not looking so smart now though, with Clisby, Thurlow, Talia, Hartlett, Hanley, Colquhoun, Neade, Bennedy, Nicholls and MrBean in my team.

With a bit of luck however, I will still field a full team for my prelims.

Ringo

Point taken Doc but all my 5 leagues are ranked within the top 100 so all very competitive. (Went from 4th to 12th one week in one League with a loss)

I think it depends on weather your going or overall or league win. overall you have to get a good start and trade in the performing improvers at the start of the year. you can hold back in league by looking at your opponents team and figurin out if you need to trade. I've did well this year with holding Gibbs, Berger, Watson and because of this had 6 trades coming into finals. still have four now that I will use on Heppell, Henderson and Nicholls.

Let's just admit that there's a decent bit of luck involved... Star players in the very top tier are fairly well solid (except this year for sir Spuddington Franklin) But Ablett, Pendles, Swan, Goddard, Stevie J, Cox have all been what you would expect them to be. Some down weeks but on average they are killing it. Add a bit of smart research/experience into that to get in players like JJK, Mundy, Fyfe, Titchell, Ball, Berger who have either performed well enough to stay as keepers or made a fair bit of cash to bring in premo's. Throw in a well-educated gamble such as starting the year with Goldy at $497k on the chance he's be favoured by new ruck rules and was already an impressive figure.

But ultimately, all the research, history and experience could not have saved you from having Dangerfield, Watson, Birchall, Hanley, Heppell get injured, from carrying Jelwood and Buddy through less-than-expected form or from making that one dodgy captain call where Ablett gets 9 points against GWS or something like that. You can prepare but ultimately for overall and even for leagues there is still an element of luck involved.
