a slap on the wrist? YOU CANT BE SERIOUS?

2 million highest ever fine Carlton only got 250k

kicked out of the finals never been done before

loss of draft picks in 2 drafts cant remember if that's been done before

you cant say "besides the money" that's part of the punishment ffs

Carlton were fined $1m, lost lots of draft picks, and honestly still haven't recovered from it.

You're right kilbluff, definitely not a slap on the wrist, but if any other employer had endangered the welfare of there employees, I'd imagine jail time wouldn't be far off. So in some ways, the Dons got off fairly ok.

Justin Bieber

Adelaide lost their top 2 picks last year ftr.

But they gave them up unwilling.

kilbluff1985

Ok I think someone on a show or the radio said Carlton got 250k that's where I got that from obviously wrong though

Has any one really given thought that the Dons have been demoted to 9th position and not stripped of points.  This effectively is a further penalty for next years draft as although they lose the first 2 pickets if they had gone to bottom would have received 1st pick in round 3 but now get a latter pick in Round 3.

Think when all is added up the penalty is about correct.

The other concern I have is with the admissions of not maintaining safe work place does that open up the possibility of further action by players against the club under the act?

Yep, I reckon any disgruntled player could do that.

Think the media pointed out a while ago that any contracted player could probably walk out also

Workplace stuff has to be opened up and available to the individualplayers. The concerns that this raises for individuals will be a growing thing over time, I think. wait till the player lawyers get into the club about the way they've failed to look after them. will be big again, I think.

The large amount of coin placed on Essendon to finish bottom weighed heavily into this. The AFL did not want the association of people profiting from their decision should they have stripped Essendon of all points.

Not sure whether this is the thread to post it in, but whatever.

Just heard on Channel Nine News that the AFL has dropped all charges against Dr Bruce Reid.

THE AFL has withdrawn all charges against Essendon club doctor Bruce Reid issued after the ASADA inquiry into the Bombers' supplements program in 2011 and 2012.

Reid had been contesting his charge of conduct unbecoming issued by the League last month and launched legal action, but a joint statement released on Wednesday confirmed a settlement has been agreed to by the AFL and Reid.

"I support the stance taken by the AFL and the AFL Medical Officers Association in requiring appropriate governance at club level (particularly in terms of 'sports science')," he said in the statement.

Hey guys just wanted to bring up something that has been bugging me.
If Essendon has been charged due to their poor governance, resulting in "pushing the boundaries", is there any chance the AFL could be charged by ASADA/WADA for their poor governance of the league? They did not have the necessary procedures or rules in place to prevent these boundaries being pushed.
I could be wrong but these are the issues I have. The AFL did not know the credentials of the medical/sports science staff within the clubs. The AFL did not have procedures in place regarding the recording of injections to players. I think the AFL was way behind in regulating the supplements given to players.
This has been a big wake up call to the AFL, but should they have needed it. I think they have handled themselves very poorly.
Was their governance up to scratch? Or were they living in the dark ages?

kilbluff1985

i'm pretty sure ASADA/WADA cant charge anyone for poor governance

Ringo

Correct KB ASADA/WADA are only interested in persons who have been found guilty of using prohibited substances whteher knowingly or not by players or coaches or other staff and governance is not in their charter.

Bones Bombers

Yeah thanks guys, I understand that. Just seems that the AFL are a law unto themselves. Not doing a great job. A bit behind the times.
