I can't see how much salary cap room could have been freed up with the retirements of Jude Bolton and Mitch Morton. Morton would have been on next to nothing, and even if say Bolton was on $500k, only $250k of that would have counted assuming he was a veteran....

I reckon some very nervous players.

Yep...and very nervous coaches, back room boys, medicos, trainers, fitness advisers, PR people...all got there work cut out over the next few weeks.....worst case scenario would be a serious injury early in the season ..nah lets not go there.. 8)

For forgot Mattner, Mumford and Brown leaving too. That leaves a veteran spot open to free up approx 1 million.

Contract will be backloaded so that when Swans have to pay the big money, Franklin will be veteran listed and he'll count for half towards the cap.

You also have McVeigh, Goodes, LRT and Shaw all hitting retirement age so its not that hard to see how they can pay.

Apparently we've said that Sam Reid isn't leaving the club, so I'm going to say he'll be point down back like his brother

Best news I've heard all week :)

I heard GWS have tabled a deal for Mumford that he's likely to accept. So long as he's not going to Hawthorn!

Isn't the rules for veteran status 10 years at the same club? In which case Franklin won't qualify

The Lions were destroyed through backloading.. I'd be wary....

It is also under the assumption that say champion players like Kieran Jack and Dan Hannebery won't want $800k+ contracts in a few years....

Yeah, mummy to GWS would be best case for us. Might get a nice high draft pick!

I don't really think Jack will leave considering he's a co-captain, but Hanners is a bit of a worry.

Forgot about last years Veteran change. My bad!

Whether Jack or Hannebery want big contracts is all up to the them and their relationship to the club. If they want to go home in search of big money, Sydney probably couldn't stop them anyway.

Let's not confuse Fevola and Franklin here. There's a difference between being agressive onfield and having serious offield issues

Honestly I look at our mids and I cant see any choosing to leave? and again, once you have the maths worked out you can sign these guys to deals that keep them happy. We have our most expensive players leaving in the next 1-3 years.

If that's the case, it is not really right though is it? Bring in the forwards for the big bucks, at the expense of your midfield stars. Like saying 'we'll pay you less because we can'

Wasn't talking about Fev, was thinking more after the 2001-04 era, with players like Voss, Lappin, Aker being paid huge amounts well after there peak --> and in some cases AFTER they had retired.

[/quote] You are correct Oss back ended contracts have really hurt us and is something for Sydney to be wary of.  Even if they go to Veterans list Salary still has to be paid even if only half is counted for Salary Club.

Ricochet

Heard something today that if it is backloaded and he gets injured/delisted, Swans would have to pay him out in a lump some? And that was the reason the AFL might block the trade.

Shows my age

If its true that Franklin contacted Sydney at the end of 2012, they've no doubt been planning this for quite some time. I guess more things have to develop

surley this is all in hand as far as the swans are concerned....they have been working on this for ages... it will be the risk to the competition in the AFL's eyes that has Andy D's boys in a dilemma.. tops off a poor year for them... 8)

I think Demetriou would be unimpressed that Franklin isn't heading to GWS, but that's from a club expansion point of view
