Alright, the secret's out, yes I have been working on a MVP award  :P

So I best explain my formula:

Basically, in a real AFL match, you have defenders vs forwards, midfielders vs midfielders and forwards vs defenders.

Take Berlin and Dublin, for example.

I take Berlin's best scoring 4 defenders, 5 midfielders (midfield includes ruckman) and 4 forwards and subtotal each of those positions. I say best scoring 4 defenders etc., because there are two on the bench who are either a defender, mid, ruck or forward. For example, I had 5 defenders play (one on bench), the benchie scores 150, and the four defenders score, 100, 90, 80 and 50. I take the 4 highest scoring defenders (so the guy on the bench and 3 of the named defenders), even though the guy who scored 50 was named in the starting 4, I don't add his score as he was not part of the 4 highest scoring players. This is likewise for midfielders (including ruckmen) and forwards.

So after all this, I have 3 sub-totals for Berlin, and 3 sub-totals for Dublin.

For example, it may have gone like this:

Berlin DEF - 380              Dublin FOR - 330               DIFFERENCE = 50

Berlin MID - 470              Dublin MID - 600               DIFFERENCE = 130

Berlin FOR - 230              Dublin DEF - 400               DIFFERENCE = 170

I look at the differences of the sub-totals, and see that Dublin's DEF outscored Berlin's FOR by the most (170 points).

I then see that Alex Rance was the highest scoring defender for Dublin, and award him 3 votes.

I look at the second biggest difference, and see that Dublin's MID outscored Berlin's MID by 130 points.

I then see Joel Selwood was the highest scoring midfielder for Dublin, and award him 2 votes.

I look at the smallest difference, and see that Berlin's DEF outscored Dublin's FOR by 50 points.

I then see that Michael Hibberd was the highest scoring defender for Berlin, and award him 1 vote.

And that's it.

RULES:

If 2 players tied with the highest score in the position (e.g. Daniel Wells and Jack Steven both scored a midfield high of 130), I use the Excel RANDOM function to decide who will be awarded votes.

If 2 opposing positions tied with each other (e.g. Berlin's DEF tied with Dublin's FOR), I award votes to the highest scoring player out of Berlin's DEF and Dublin's FOR

This system I think awards the importance and value of a good defender or forward (or general player), as the Jim Stynes Medal is predominantly midfield biased.

It also awards the player scored in the crucial position that got their team the points in the end, and truly think that the player was the most valuable in the match.

What do people think?

Also, with the coaches award, I had one with Berlin last year with the exact same criteria  :P and will be announcing him at the EOS

And congrats KB!

Is there a tl;dr version or Purple's MVP Award system for Dummies book? Might need it.  :-[

roo boys!

I like it Purps, as like you said makes sure midfielders don't always take home all the awards just through weight of numbers.

The only problem I could see arising is that say for example for Dublin, the DEF vs FWD and MID vs MID are evenly matched with no real standouts (no-one over a 110), but Dublin's forward line has 3 players that score 150, 145 and 137. Bit harsh on the blokes that scored 145 and 137 not to get any votes while a sub-100 defender gets votes.

Sounds awesome Purps, really like it mate! Good on you for that effort! 8)

That potential problem has indeed kept me up at night  :P. But if you think about it, if an AFL teams' forward line dominated, it usually implies that the opposing forward line did bugger all, so you could say the defenders are to thank for that and they too deserve credit.

But I can say to you that sort of thing hasn't happened off the top of my memory (yet)  :-[

Cheers toges! It's not too bad, as I do the Jim Stynes medal as well. Just an extra column really  :P

btw guys, this year's award ceremony is going to be bigger, better..... and will blow the forum apart!

In case the new coaches of 2013 haven't seen it, to get a sense of what to expect, Ossie and myself did an Awards ceremony last year, check it out! :)

Like it Purps as it does not purely favour mid fielders like a lot of other awards.

Hope you have a nice macro worked out to calculate though.

Beijing's nomination for the coaches' award:

A tough choice between a few blokes for us! Sam Mayes and Oli Wines were serious contenders for us given their standout first seasons for the team, obviously providing us with a bright future.... But they aren't gonna get our nomination! The bloke that impresses us the most, that keeps our score respectable most weeks.... MATTHEW KREUZER!

He has averaged 110 unsubbed this season, pretty much our only consistent captain option (aside from Harry on occasion), and just an all-round gun! It will take a serious offer to lure this jet away from Beijing in the trade season!

Congratz KB! Obviously lifted the mood :D.

Will do a little write up soon on our nomination, although an obvious one ;).

There were a few who could have potentially been the nomination for PNL. Jonathon Griffin looked like a steal with his start to the season, before an injury ruled him out for the rest of the year :(. Jarrod Harbrow and Tom Lynch stood up in their respective lines when we needed the young guns to stand up. Justin Westhoff was brought in with a trade that involved Stevie J going to the Armadillos, and besides a rough patch has been more than solid as a replacement. None stood up more than our nomination though in Chad Wingard!

Picked #5 in the first National Draft, he started his first season at the club fairly slowly, scoring pretty mediocorely as a small forward barely making first team appearances. Fast forward a year and he's arguably one of the top 3 of PNL's finest players! Had a year to settle in, and went BANG from the get go, getting plenty of the ball and plenty of goals. All while showing his hard-nut attitude when it comes to attacking the ball, although sometimes scary at times, we fear for his health. Getting knocked around by opponents and even teammates has got to take a toll on his body, but he keeps trekking on! With an average of 97.81, and a lowest score of 71 over 17 rounds, he has shown the entire season why he is the future leader of the PNL Reindeers. As soon as the award came out, Daz and I knew who our nomination was.
