Hey guys, I attempted this last year and really loved seeing the ideas and issues that came up during the entire season as well as the decisions I made for better and for worse. I hope you enjoy the coverage as much as I do, and please post and become a part of it!

HAMSTRUNG HEROES - Starting Squad

B: Goddard, Gibbs, Heppell, Goodes, Pittard, Stevenson (Heath, Terlich)
M: Ablett, Pendlebury, Watson, JPKennedy, Dangerfield, Wines, O'Meara, Viney (KMitchell, Crouch)
R: Cox, Jacobs (Blicavs, Daw)
F: Franklin, Zorko, Rockliff, Karnezis, Patton, Macaffer (Neade, McBean)

Preseason Decision Making Process

Backline
I always see Goddard and Gibbs as non negotiables. They will always average over a hundred come seasons end and should be in from the start, regardless of their price tag. Gibbs especially as I see him increasing his average a fair bit under Mick.
I chose Heppell as a bit of roughie to break out this year. He has steadily increased his midfield time over the past two years and his NAB cup numbers were good which gave me a fair bit of confidence.
I only chose the three backline premiums for a number of reasons - 1. They are the lowest scoring premiums of any line so I think that my money is better used elsewhere and 2. the plethora of quality backline rookies this year made it hard to pass up the 5 other spots available

Midfield
Ablett and Pendlebury, Like the two G's down back, are non negotiables. Gary is Gary and Pendlebury is underpriced for what he can achieve. Watson and Kennedy were my next two picks, Watson only on the eve of his game. I just think both had break out years last year but play a SC sort of game - high contested possesions, clearances and can kick goals - and should improve. Dangerfield was my roughie and probably could have been Selwood or Cotchin in the end but I like his steady rise and his big, big games. With that will come inconsistency but im willing to ride out the wave. The rookies are pretty self explanatory. Viney and Wines are contested ball specialists, Mitchell has the experience and hopefully enough games upgraded to produce some nice cash and O'Meara and Crouch should have gone 1 and 2 in their draft year if they werent already nabbed.

Ruck
Quite a bit of confusion here, I always wanted Cox for his forward line eligibility but a lot of names went through here - Ryder, Maric, Goldstein, Luenberger - in the end I went for consistency and picked Jacobs as I think he can only improve on what he has been producing lately. I can see myself playing around with this structure though, possibly on the eve of round three due to the lack of rookie rucks that were named.

Forwards
Buddy was a big issue for me. I didnt have him in to begin with but a lot of injuries as well as suspensions piled up and in the end I felt like I had no choice but to pick him. Im just hoping he goes big in the first couple of rounds to justify this. I had a man crush on Zorko last year so it would be wrong of me not to go around again. I am surprised he was left with his forward eligibility as I can see him matching the outputs of Beams or Danger circa 2012. perhaps not at that scale but a consistent 90-110 every week. Rockliff again is a no brainer. In terms of midpricers I jumped on Karnezis with his preseason form showing a fair bit, but then got seriously shafted into picking Patton. I had Petterd in at the beginning of the round expecting him to find a spot in the Richmond backline but to no avail, then had Varcoe in there while I continually got shafted for cash with my rookies. I had to downgrade someone and he ended up being it. I still think Patton can do a Cameron of last year and have the big enough games to really make some cash but he definitely wasnt the player I wanted in that position. Macaffer for value along with Neade who I can see as the stay at home Port small forward, hopefully keeping his place once Gray comes in.

I will continue to update my team on a weekly basis and post any concerns I have in terms of trading in the future.

Below is a run down on a weekly basis of..

Round 1 Review

The Good: Ablett rising almost at the same time as the Son of God really helped me pull out a good score, JPK kept up where he left off, Pendles smashed it and Watson was reliable as ever. Gibbs and Rocky showed why they were well backed in and a few rookies in Pittard, Goodes, Viney and Wines dominated with premium output! Rucks were solid without being outstanding..

The Bad: a few ones across every line. Danger, Flogard and Hep put me on the back foot, and poor output from Zorko and Franklin hurt, but apart from that most players were solid.. My mid pricers in Karnezis and Patton hit 60s which is probably the least I expect from them but I can't really complain..

Few issues I have is in terms of my ruck structure.. I might end up dropping a premium and get in a Goldy or Mumford in my rucks and move Cox to my forward line just to help counter the lack of rookies in those areas.. Perhaps Hep if he doesn't perform against Melbourne.. But you would think he would.. What do people think?

mumfster

i like your team. I noticed you dont have Jordan Russell.. Should i get Tom Rockliff?

felsty

if i were you i would stick with both russell and zorko.. particularly zorko.. see how he goes against adelaide and assess from there.
russell could be downgraded quite easily, lots of back rookies if he doesnt come along..

felsty

do people think is worthwhile..

heppell > frost
daw > mumford

all depends on how well these players play, prob at end of round 2

mumfster

Not sure how long frost will last. Pies may have a few ins this week

johnnytheboy1

i reckon Shaw will be back and Frost will go also clinton Young and Dale Thomas are a big chance to come into that team. Frost and Dwyer would be the 2 that that would go not sure about Macaffer hopefully that Mark & Goal at the end saves him.
Apart from that your team is fine Heppell should come good.

Heppell>Brown
Daw>Mumford

yes!

Mumford injury free will score more than Heppell and Brown more than Daw

felsty

I think this is a positive trade for me, for after round 2. Have to take into account Mumford has only been playing against GWS and GC though, but if he shows some good improvement I might get amongst it.. It also all depends whether I can cover a few donuts in ruck/fwds

felsty

Probably wont make any trades this week, however next week and the week after I'm going to do a bit of fixing for all my rookies, particularly in the forward and ruck lines. Daw, McBean are donuts ATM and I'm not sure if Neade, Macaffer and Blicavs will last too long..
I'm thinking of keeping McBean just for r/f VC loophole throughout the season. I don't think Rowe will stay long in the Carlton team unless he rips it up
Staker will be a good inclusion up forward once he gets some game time in him, as well as Lee later in the year.

After week three will be much harder, I had Petterd in my starting team but took him out once he wasn't named, and Luey could provide for a good inclusion after his two games if he is looking good in the games he plays.. I just feel as though I need two solid rucks plus Cox in the fwd line and not just Jacobs and Cox. It's putting a lot of pressure on my rookies that are lacking on the pine..

So on my watch list - Luey and Petterd but also quality rookies that should bob up, luckily Terlich and Crouch got named justifying my choice in including them in my side

Round 2 Review

The Good: My Essendon boys answered the call and upped their output from last week, along with them my backline rookies all scored really healthily, premiums mids all went well and omeara made up for viney and wines. rucks were solid as ever, and my fwd premiums fired for once which was good

The Bad: putting the big C on Ablett instead of the VC was a pretty big stuff up on my behalf and lost me 130 points, Viney and Wines struggled to reproduce their amazing round 1 scores, im not sure what to do with kane mitchell now that he has been sub twice - really hurts his prospects. and again big question marks over zorko. im not too sure what to do with him but i might just have to hang tough with him

felsty

Trading Ideas...

I have a few issues surrounding my team but feel as though I have found a pretty good solution
My plan is to trade Kane Mitchell to either Sam Dwyer or Matt Jones and then to upgrade Karnezis to JJ Kennedy

That gives me one more week to watch Zorko and if he doesnt produce then ill trade him, possibly to Luenberger using Cox and then upgrading a rookie to Ricky Petterd if he is looking like producing as well

Can people see anything else I can do to fix my team up?

felsty

So what do people think?

Kane Mitchell > Sam Dwyer
Patty Karnezis > JJK?

Or should I be looking more closely at downgrading a daw or mcbean to Dwyer instead??

Another move I could do would be to just downgrade Karnezis to Dwyer and then next week upgrade Daw/Blicavs to Luenberger and move cox to the fwd line?
