Reality check?

Very surprised about the Lions lack of performance today. They won the NAB cup against a strong Carlton side in Melbourne, I thought they'd take one of the likely bottom 4 teams pretty easy - Melbourne or no Melbourne.

Suddenly, Voss has pressure on him again (which will be erased with a win, but still!)

So what went wrong?

Rockliff looks good though :)

Not sure what went wrong today.  :( Only watched the second half, but our accuracy was shower  :( :(

Embarrassing display. They better come out against Adelaide and kill it. Really do not know who to tip!

Just shows that the nab cup means bugger all..

I went to the game today and the midfield effort was disgraceful. I will do a bit of a warp up of what I saw later on.

Ringo

Will wait for BB report from game.

It is no secret that I was nervous about this game as I had posted in a few threads.

From what I observed on the telecast a couple of things:

1. Dogs were very committed from the start - extreme forward pressure - 2/3 in tackles. Libba and Dalhaus were outstanding in this regard.
2. With Goodes mopping up down the back and running of HB Murphy was allowed to run free up the ground. No one really accountable for him.  May be wrong but thsat is how it appeared.
3. No one tried to assit Rich with the Lower tag.  Team mates need to take some responsibility to assist.
4. Our kicking accuracy is still crap.  Been that way for a few years.
5. Roughead has improved greatly as a defender and appears to have more body strength this year.

On a positive note Rockliff and Moloney went well. Do not think Beams will be the sub in future.

From SC perspective Hanley may have a date with the judiciary for the tackle on Gia.

Can only hope was a reality check and that we will step it up for Adelaide next week.

Colliwobblers

bit of a nab cup hangover? i don't think the effort was acceptable or that they were well coached, same over 4 quarters no real changes made to address the issues.

Dogs were solid, effor t was great, murph plays as a fwd this season that is well documented and goodes has shown what he can do in defence and as Ringo said roughy is not the roughy we saw last season and expected this season, nor is grant which is even more surprising.

boyd out and a couple of others, dogs will be a bottom side, but i think a dangerous one capable of beating sides who have off days.

Rich was always going to get tagged out of the game, expect that every week, think he did well to fight through it at times but lower did a great job.

thought redden was solid and zorko when free, but he also wore a tag at times from none other than picken which is always going to be hard to break.

agree beams is better than being sub and had an impact.

Black and Burger will significantly improve the outrageously poor outcome in the midfield for the Lions.

roughead destroyed brown.

roughead destroyed brown.
Brown's getting old though, Roughead will probably reach his prime soon

Well it was nothing short of a disgraceful effort from the Lions today, we did absolutely nothing right. Here's a few things that I noticed during the game.

-Our midfield was very poor. Redden was running with Griffen and got smashed, he had no meaningful possessions, only got points for his tackles today. Rich was good in some small bursts, but mainly unseen. Zorko didn't get much of the ball in a sweeping role, and Karnezis wasn't effective with his touches.

-Rockliff was good around the ground mopping up and pushing the ball forward. Moloney was a godsend and the only one to actually get some clearances. Without him we would've lost by a lot more.

-Longer was smashed by Minson, Will got all the important hitouts and Billy just couldn't get any to advantage. Minson also had something like 6 clearances

-We had absolutely no forward pressure when the Dogs were trying to clear the ball. No one manned up and the Dogs had so much space to run in. They did the complete opposite though, and gave us no space, creating a lot of turnovers.

-We were just smashed all through the midfield, and when we got the ball forward, the entries into the 50 were horrible. Bulldogs got heaps of intercept marks

-Cornelius had another quiet one, but Roughead smashed Brown, he just couldn't get a mark

-The defence was complete crap, no one manned up and they couldn't clear the ball properly, Sauce was the only one who played decent

-Rob Murphy played a good first half but went out of it a bit in the second, Patfull really tightened up on him and kept him honest

-I didn't see the Hanley incident, so I'm not sure if he is in any trouble there

-We played bad, but the Dogs played a great game, really they did everything right

-So really no one managed to have a great game, but Moloney, Rockliff, Merrett and Green were probably the best for us
