What are your thoughts on Jordan Russell? I'm considering him for Terlch

Colliwobblers

worried clarkes form in nab cup has been very good, russell will need to play very very well right from game one and keep it up.

they can also use young off half back, there is no place for him in the midfield or fwd so russell has some competition for a spot.

i rate him and think the Pies 100% need one of him or young to provide run off half back. If clarke had have sucked in nab cup i would have been a lot more sold on russell but clarke looked good and now both clarke and russell are named on the bench

will one be sub?

Thanks colliwobs! Who would go with Tony Armstrong or Him?

Colliwobblers

that' a tough call, armstrong also named on the bench, doesnt mean much but it is ALWAYS nice to see your player named on the park!!!

i think armstrongs job security is far less certain. Russell is required if he can do the role they need he plays.

i think Armstrong is a depth player and is only there as others are not.

Sydney fans probably know a lot more than me on his situation but armstrong was just as good last season and just wasn't required.

So I should just downgrade Russell back to Heath or Terlich? And save the $$$, as I've already been burnt by Kane Lucas (another uncertain 200k player)   as any rookie could've scored like he did yesterday

Russell has been out my side for weeks but i've just put him back in and used the cash in mids. Reason i think he is safe is both heath shaw and harry said he allows them to push up the ground - they've named his specifically. He is also what we really need and thats a defender who can take the smalls better than harry can.

I think he'll average a yo-yo 80 (range 60-100) and play 16 games.

However, armstrong may fill the hole left by alex johnson.

I watched all the Magpies preseason games bar one this year and kept my eye particularly on Russell as I wanted him in my team. The one game I missed they played Geelong down at Simonds which apparently he racked up the ball and looked the goods. In all the games I did watch he slotted in really well into the back half, and each game the commentators had him named in the back pocket of the best 22. I think I am the one Carlton supporter who actually likes Jordan Russell as a player. He was a perennial  whipping boy at the Blues, even in the year he came 2nd in the B&F. The one thing I find with Russell is he is a confidence player. He can rack up the ball but his kicking was a weak point in his game and when he was down on confidence he would doubt he would second guess with the ball and butcher the ball. His defensive work was good generally and he shut Stevie J out of multiple games and was the only guy on the list who was able to do it. He looked really solid in the NAB and was kicking well on both feet which I thought was a very good sign. Unless he ends up severely out of form I don't see why he can't play every game and average 80-85 on the season. If his kicking has always been his weak point and he is now kicking well on both feet, he averaged 86 in 2010, I can't see a reason he won't hit that again.

Also Young has never struck me as a guy who can play half back. He is not the best defender and he is a pure offensive wing with the ability to break the lines take a couple of bounces and kick it long.

In comparison to Clarke, he is the guy that could take his spot, but could Clarke be used as a run with player like he was against the Bombers last year taking out Stanton? The other thing with Clarke and Russell is that Russell is a lot taller. He can play on the medium sized guys and take them in the air, where Clarke might struggle a bit more. He adds that versatility down back.

well said Mat0369 - every point you make seems valid, i have liked russell and wondered why he didn't cut the mustard at the Blues also.

think we need him and he will play every game unless he spuds up. but also think the attack of halfback is something we lack a little more than the defence, if he can do both BONUS - but it is run off half back i think we sorely need.

if he can use the ball well. should play most games. as long as he isn't the next Simon Buckley ..

The difference between Russell and Buckley is that Buckley was a spud at the Dees, Russell was pick 9 in the 04 draft and finished second in the B&F in a team that played finals a couple years ago before injury and then form returning from injury hurt his place in the team. Zach Tuohy took his spot in the team and played well so it was tough to break back in for him

Same deal with me. Terlich or Russell? Who's the one to pick do we reckon?

sid3bysid3

I think if you have the cash roll the dice on russell. Terlich will play though and sooner rather than later IMO
