Hey Zip,

What is your best 22 players for GWS this year?
B: Gilham, Kennedy, Mohr
HB: Hampton, Davis, Bugg
M: Coniglio, Treloar, Scully
HF: Whitfield, Patton, Shiel
FF: Hoskin-Elliot, Cameron, Sumner
R: Giles, Greene, Ward
I/C: O'Hailpin, Townsend, Smith, Adams

That's atm... there's a few players like cornes who'd go in there if he was fit, and tyson, buntine who'd be pushing for selection too.  I  think we'll see Jaksch, Plowman and Corr rotated through the team as well (although, I'd be surprised to see more than one of them play at once unless we have an injury). O'hailpin hasn't really shown a lot in the pre-season, but we need him structurally, so I think he'll play... that being said, Brogans always there for second ruck.

Sumner is probably the most speculative pick, playing only 2 games last year, but I found him really impressive in NAB, showed some really good awareness and a ridiculous amount of speed. The backline feels a little too top heavy, but you'll have Hampton swinging forward as well, so it's about right imo.

That being said, a lot of those positions are going to be rotated. There are blokes like Palmer who should really be in there and guys like Thornton who'll be pushing for it. IMO, out of that line up, the following are pretty much locked in our 22 barring injury.

B:      -     ,    -     ,     -
HB: Hampton, Davis, Bugg
M: Coniglio, Treloar, Scully
HF: Whitfield, Patton, Shiel
FF:    -  , Cameron,     -
R: Giles, Greene, Ward
I/C:   -  ,   -   , Smith, Adams

*edit* I thought hampton was taller than he was :S I'm pretty happy with my initial structure now :P
So, in essence I was saying it should have been

B: Gilham, Kennedy, Mohr
HB: Hampton, Davis, Bugg
M: Coniglio, Treloar, Scully
HF: Whitfield, Patton, Shiel
FF: Hoskin-Elliot, Cameron, Sumner
R: Giles, Greene, Ward
I/C: O'Hailpin, Townsend, Smith, Adams

and the team is

B: Adam Kennedy, Tim Mohr, Stephen Gilham
HB: Tomas Bugg, Phil Davis, Curtly Hampton
C: Will Hoskin-Elliott, Callan Ward, Lachie Whitfield
HF: Stephen Coniglio, Jeremy Cameron, Tom Scully
F: Liam Sumner, Jonathon Patton, Devon Smith
Foll: Jonathan Giles, Adam Treloar, Toby Greene
I/C: Taylor Adams, Dean Brogan, Lachie Plowman, Dylan Shiel
Emg: Sam Frost, Rhys Palmer, Nathan Wilson

So, I'm really happy with that prediction tbh :P Absolutely nailed the backline, everything else was about right in its place. Only difference is Ohailpin + Townsend for Brogan+ Plowman, I really like the look of that team tbh :P

kilbluff1985

hey Zip what's you prediction for the game including margin?

Ziplock

Im calling sydney by 30.

The actual match ups though... I think Gilham, Mohr and Davis should be able to hold down Goodes, Reid and the resting ruckman pretty well. I rate giles + brogan a couple of cuts ahead of mumford + pyke as well.

It's pretty hard to call though... I think one on one, cameron + patton (as a combo) will probably at least break even, I think it comes down to the delivery that they get. Sydney's goal kicking midfields in Jetta, Jack and Kennedy are a worry- I'm not sure what we'll do about jetta, I (think) they might try to get hoskin elliott to run with him, although it's a bit of a waste of his talent.

This year I dont think any of sydneys lines will be massively stronger than any of GWS lines... that being said, their team cohesion will probably be better, and with the exception of the rucks, they beat us by every other category, which is really going to add up.

It's really hard to call it- there's so much potential for really fast improvement in the giants.

I think the next matchup in like (round 16?) we'll get destroyed though with a fully fit goodes and tippett in the side :P

I think you should be good with brisbane... it could be touch and go though with the gws/ sydney one :P

Do you see Don Tyson slotting back in when he comes back? that squad looks watertight for spots, maybe Brogan or Sumner makes way for him?

Also, Asians question, will Setsy get a run?

yeah, competition for spots is going to be tough. Tyson should make the 22, but so should cornes when he's fit. Ohailpin will play in place of brogan (depending on how brogans body is holding up).

Tyson's competing directly with, imo, sumner, palmer, whitfield and hoskin elliot for a position, and indirectly with players like kennedy.  Cornes is competing against players like mohr/plowman.

honestly, I think tyson will be given as many games as possible this season- he hasn't resigned yet, so as soon as he's fit I think the giants are going to want to make him feel as valuable as possible. Atm, if he was fit, I think he'd probably push out sumner.

CrowsFan

Good to see Sumner getting a chance from the start of the season. He was taken in the top 10 so certainly has talent. Looked good in the nab too :)

Ziplock

yeah, I found his nab pretty impressive, he looked like he had serious speed and really good awareness.
