How different is playing a rookie in the rucks to playing a rookie in the forwards or defence?
If Currie/Daw/Gorringe/Rowe can play and play decently they'll score better than a forward rookie and with backup in the forward line with Cox/Roughy/Ryder then this is actually quite a clever tactic imo
Exactly, There really isnt any difference.  With the FWD rookies looking pretty average at this stage, starting a ruckman rookie could be better off.  At the end of the day if Currie, Daw, Witts etc are more safe and one of which will score higher than your fwd rookies.  This is clearly a better option.

Im really struggling with fwd roookies, so im taking this option really seriously

Great work Mabo.

One thing that has got me re-thinking this strategy is looking at the last 4 years winning teams. They have all started with one premo ruck and a premo or mid pricer at R2. Neither of them from memory have started with a rookie at R2.

Does that make it bad karma, or is it worth the risk with a few extra trades this year?

This is an interesting point.  However last few years there's seemed to be better forward rookies and fewer premium R/F.  But on the other hand Smith and Giles in the last two years have scored very well and probably better than what we suspect from the rookie rucks this year.
