I locked him from the start, might be a unique this year.  He had a bad year last year and averaged a shade under 100.  Tex a bigger risk IMO.

Yep you got me there with Boomer :-)

However Petrie is still pretty solid. He is the 4th highest total points scoring forward from last year with only Boomer,Rockliff and Pav in front of him. I excluded Nic nat and Cox as was not fwds last year but even if included that puts Petrie 6th.

Looking at it this way it gets quite interesting. Alot of people look at the players average and not total points where i feel the total points for the year is very important for starting picks.

Was in a similar position and had Jimmy in and out several times. Decided to wait and put him on pricewatch.
ATM I've settled on De Boer who has been tipped to spend more time in the guts. He is only in 1.6 % of teams
and $70,300 cheaper. 8)

Yeah I dunno, im just searching hard for another forward. I think all of the forward prems have big question marks this year. The only 2 I see really safe are cox and rocky

If you don't pick him, he has a habit of being BOG against the Hawks, so don't get sucked in by his round 1 score and try and sideways trade for him straight off. I can see him putting up a 120+ with no Kelly and Johnson round 1 and backing it up with an 80 odd in round 2 against North.

well if you know jimmy is going to score 120 in rd 1 then 80 in rd 2 then why wouldn't you start with him? seems like 2 very reasonable scores for a forward :P

doogz

I'm picking jimmy.  He's a POD for me.

Because the 120 in round 1 is going to be the score to suck you in. With the wide variety of positions he will play his scores will deviate from a score of 100 one week and 70 the next. Especially if he plays deep forward. Think Rockliffs scores when he was thrown deep forward in games. What about the week a player is smashing them and the give Bartel the shut down job? With Stevie J expecting 80% mid time, he is taking someone spot in the guts, that guy is Bartel.

I had him in my team as well, but the more I hear about Johnson playing and training with the mids, someone is getting pushed out to make way and with Bartel lining up forward it had to be him, so I did the Bartel Johnson swap

When has Bartel ever been given a tagging job? Because from memory he never has. No doubt that Johnson is possibly going to take some midfield time from Bartel, but that also means Johnson won't be kicking the goals anymore, so someone still needs to kick the goals as a small forward. Rockliffs scores weren't so dreadful last season if he was a forward, he would of been top 10 for his position. So from my understanding Jimmy shouldn't be dropping off drastically for him not to be a top 8 forward, and because of that I'm starting him.

He has multiple times. He has been thrown forward to keep guys accountable while take them out of the game, similar to Jordan Lewis. I think he has been sent to Sam Mitchell on occasions as well, and I went back through the fan footy archive. 2010 GF Heath Shaw. He was given the role on him

Do you mean the 2010 PF or the 2011 GF? in either case Jimmy collected 29 (117) and 26 (100) respectively, so he must be one of those taggers where he collects his own ball. Lets not forget he also won the Norm Smith on GF day. I'm sorry but i just strongly disagree with you that he is going to be tagging at most stages of the season. I'm not arguing that he is a better option then say Stevie J but there is little to no sign that he is going to drop off significantly.

And the fact that rumors have come out that he was playing with stress fractures in his foot towards the end of the season. So he took time off from football and then came back firing for the preseason hungrier then ever. Again only rumor but surely isn't a negative.

I meant 2011 GF. Mistype on my behalf. He won't get a tagging job every week, but it will happen during the season when they need him to part way through a game. He is the mr fix it. He will play forward as well. He is a good overhead mark so he is the logical player to move forward. Again, look at Rockliffs scores from the second half of the season when he played predominantly forward. They will be similar in fluctuation to Bartels. When his team mate is cheaper and will have more time in the middle, he is the logical choice.

hahahaha I guess we just can't agree and sit on opposite sides of the fence :P

I am not saying he will be a bad pick but I think he will average similar to what he is priced at now (95 or so) and he won't score as well as Stevie J. Again, I had him in my team as soon as I saw he was a DPP option, but then I went back and looked at his scores, the roles he has played in the past and what role he is expected to play this coming season. I have watched a lot of Geelong games, he will go where the coach needs him and sometimes that hurts his output. I can almost guarantee he will start round 1 like a house on fire in the middle with no Kelly or Stevie J playing the Hawks. But come the end of the season I think his average will still be 95 and not in the top 8 forwards.

Tex is a heaps better choice

how so?? bartel will still push up into the middle and score well where as you'll find alot more inconsistency with tex (not saying he is a bad choice by any stretch) tex does have the higher ceiling. but bartel does have the consistency so IMO they are about even.
