Can you really afford having Berger in your team?

Not sold on the Berger, tempting at that price to be sure but hasn't played in the NAB cup so far which has me concerned.

If your going for overall I think Berger is a big risk at R2 - it could mean a slow start and a loss of 20-40 points in that position if others have a stronger start up ruck combo.

In the days of the "set and forget"strategy - Luey wouldn't be in most teams - it seems 90% of teams I have seen had him (I was one of them, but im thinking of jumping ship).

Thoughts?

he played against the giants mate. Scored reasonably for only one quarter, haven't been any injury news, which makes me think that was enough for voss, and he's just cottonwooled him again for either the NAB GF or round 1

Yup he played one of the NAB games as a sub. He and Jacobs were the two guys I wanted in my ruck last year. Lucky I only went with Jacobs after he had an injury scare which turned season ending. He is a gun when fit, if he is fit, you pick him

I think the fact that you can have Cox in your forward line this year, meaning that if Leuey goes down you can just pop Cox into the rucks, makes a huge difference as well. Also, when he's at his best, he's a gun. And at $300k he's hard to ignore.

Problem is, will he be a gun from rd 1? If he averages 60-70 coming back he won't earn all that much, if anything at all.

There are more decent mid-pricer options than just Leuey so it's more a case of turning a premium to a cash cow somewhere else and turning Leuey into McEvoy or Maric or Jacobs. It shouldn't pose a bigger problem as most people think, unless you intended to have Leuey as a keeper.

I'll admit Leuey is one of the better mid-pricers on offer but I don't think no leuey = no win if people do choose that path.

though isnt anybody slightly concerned with the little game time he has had and then hence could be a slow a starter?

If instead i put cox back into the ruck and pick a mid pricer like kennedy to be replaced in the fwd line, is kennedy going to score better then leuey in the opening rounds? imo, yes.

So taking that into account i think kennedy will score better early, making him increase his price earlier, and making me the cash earlier and trading him to a premium quicker.

So in the end it depends what strategy your going with. Leuey will be a great pick, and won't let you down.

If he starts off slow (which I think is a very high possibility) - say an average of 75 odd then it would be a waste as an average rookie would average 65-70.

Thats right all you coaches trade Berger out so he will be my unique.

It is no secret Berger has been on a managed program for pre season.  Has done all the training that is required,  Will be playing on Friday night so observe for yourself.  In my opinion when Heat policy was introduced on Saturday berger was one of the three named players to be dropped and I suspect as a pre caution against playing him in the heat unnecessarily as part of managed program.

In just about 35 minutes of game in Round 2 Berger had 6 possessions, 5 hit outs so based on that for a whole game would score a lot more than 75-80 points.

I wouldn't rule it out.

With the new trading rules added last season, I think you can get away with it, because its easier to do corrective trades now.

If Berger starts on fire, the corrective trade will be extremely easy.

If Berger starts slowly, most people will hesitate to trade him out, because everyone else is in the same position.

The problem is actually finding another decent ruck, other than Cox.

Well coming on at 3/4 fresh is easy enough to get a few kicks when everyone else has been running around for an hour and a half.
I want to see him start on the weekend and get 30-40 or so points in the first half. If he can do that, he'll be in my team.

lucky

Apparently 3AW has reported that Berger might not be ready by rd1..

Saw this on FB:

Brisbane Lions ruckman Matthew Leuenberger is now in doubt for the start of the season according to coach Michael Voss. Voss says that the big returning ruckman has had his achilles flare up again.

Well this proves a point. He is still hampered. No thanks.

EL TIGER

Going to change a lot of teams if he's not in the starting field come Friday.

Shame too, because that freed up so much cash in other positions...

Easier to do corrective trades due to the extras, but which way to correct?

Get him in if he starts to fire for 3 rounds. Considering you'd prob have a Goldy or Roughy in R2 you wouldn't be losing much ground with this approach.

Get him in from the start. If he starts slowly (80 odd) then your potentially giving up 30 - 40 points on that 1 position for at least 3 weeks. Thats 90 - 120 points total, too much to make up imo. Your also locked in for 3 rounds minimum unless you have a 100+K in the bank...

Back to the drawing board!
