Just to tell anyone who isn't aware. Clarkson said in his post match interview that it is likely an ACL.

It's unlucky for the guy :(

News just released on the Hawks website;

"Scans today confirmed the opinion of Club medical staff that Hawks defender Matt Suckling has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee and will require a reconstruction.

Suckling will consult with a specialist in coming days and will undergo a traditional knee reconstruction.

Scans also showed he sustained little additional damage to the knee so the Hawks defender can expect a good outcome from reconstructive surgery and a solid rehabilitation program.

Hawthorn General Manager â€" Football Operations Mark Evans said that while Suckling is naturally disappointed, the young Hawk remains upbeat.

“It's obviously a devastating thing to happen to Matt on the eve of the season, but his attitude will be to throw himself into his rehab program and come back a stronger player from this,” Evans said."

So unlucky for the bloke. Good to see he's going the traditional reco though, much safer and he's still young.

Matt Suckling 2014 DT lock @ 250k anyone?

He won't be that cheap unfortunately just look at some of the players we thought would be really cheap the year that aren't like LeCras for example.

VS change rules yearly almost as much as the AFL do.

Anything could happen, hell, we could even get him for free :o

Anything could happen with his price, but even at $350k he'd need to be considered (taking into account price inflation).

Who will fill his role now?

I was thinking that this morning... Guerra comes back from the Grand Final side, and maybe Burgoyne will spend more time in defence than last season. But how will this effect Birchall's scoring? That's the big question.

Toga

I reckon it'll be bad for Birchall's scoring, but idk if that's just me.

Teams used to tag one of Birchall or Suckling... Suckling with his awesome kick would cop tags a lot, leaving Birchall as the other 'go-to' man out of defence. Now that Suckling's not there, if teams choose to put on a forward tag it will always be on Birch, which should imo see a dip in his scoring.

Ricochet

Very sad to hear, wishing him all the best for his surgery and recovery.

Another way to look at it is he will be seeked out by his team-mates more and will thus get more pill. Fwd tags can be broken if defenders and midfielders help you out. With Birch being the clear cut option out of defence he will get more protection.

My opinion anyways :)
