3 super prem midfield strategy! Thoughts

Somebody mentioned on here that the top contenders last year picked only 2 super premium midfielders at the start of the year and the rest a combination of rookies/midpricers.  I have decided to select 3 super prem midfielders and a possible prem in Moloney and what a huge difference to the side it makes in terms of spending in other areas, especially in the FWD's as rookies are a dime a dozen.

DEF: GODDARD, GIBBS, BIRCHALL, GRIMES, ATLEY, DOCHERTY, GOODES, TERLICH

MID: ABLETT, SWAN, J SELWOOD, MOLONEY, WINES, K MITCHELL, O'MEARA, CROUCH, LONERGAN, VINEY

RUC: GOLDY, LEUENBERGER

FWD: COX, ZORKS, ROCKLIFF, BARTEL, MARTIN, MACAFFER, NEADE, LEE

I have selected Bartel as he is consistenly in the 90's and never has a bad game. I am still undecided on Birchall - should I swap him with Hartlett, Jack Watts, Heppell or Yarran?

Good spread of cash I guess, my only concern with the strategy is remembering that last year you had a GWS team full of rooks that we knew were going to get a lot of game time, so it was easier to have more "guaranteed" rookies in and fill out with mid pricers.

The only comments I have are more personal dislike than actually good reasons not to have people (Like Dustbin. Ruined me last year).

I like this side. Good call on Atley. He's in my radar but want to see some more from his pre season before I decide on him.

I had Grimes the entirety of last year, and he will make you pull your hair out in frustration. Personally i'd keep Birchall and swap Grimes for Heppell. I think Heppell's scores will remain a whole lot more consistent throughout the season as opposed to Grimes which are largely sporadic. Having said that, if Grimes continues his scores where he left off last year, it'd be hard not to have him. I dunno, flip a coin.

Dusty is a big risk also. I'd lean towards a guy like Matty Wright who has a perfect launching platform for big scores. Blokes like Danger, Thompson and Sloane should cop the tag ahead of Wright, which in theory at least would allow him to roam free. Goal kicking mids are worth their weight in gold.

Hopefully your strategy pays off throughout the year. Good luck!

A lot of good rookie selection in mids this year also so I am hoping the strategy pays off :)

Very Solid team here lindo.  Well thought out and balanced based on your strategy of 3 mid prems.

Gutsy call expecting 4 prem rookies to play each week.  Was beneficial last year when we had a new Team with virtually all rookies to fall back.  We do not have that luxury this year.

Rookie selections will probably sort themselves out over the next 2 weeks.

Def: 3 super prems plus Grimes and Atley.   Grimes can be a little frustrating with injuries yet to play all games in a season but can put out reasonable scores.  Think I read somewhere where he has another slight injury now.  Atley I think will explode here and have a good year sound choice.
Mids: 3 super prems although probably prefer JPK to Jelwood but both sound.  Biased towards rdaMoloney who I think will get close to 95/100 average allowing for upgrade and making cash. Do you intend keeping him or upgrading up to you but could be a handy M8 - M10 come finals.
Rucks: Similar to most - Have not posted rookies but would expect Rowe, McBean, or Sinclair to be one for flexibility DPP with Cox.  Goldy would need to improve a fair bit based on last weeks performances.
Fwds: We agree to differ on Bartel and Martin will he finally realise his full potential this year.

To answer your question I would keep Birchill as 3rd Defender as with the strategy you have adopted you need a top prem at D3. Hartlett may rise but is injury prone, I am concerned with Heppell, and Goddard possibly taking something away from him. Watch the NAB Cup to see if trend continues - when Goddard stepped up in 2nd game Heppell seemed to drift out.  Would not consider Yarran for D3 as you would be relying on them averaging 100ppg and do not think Yarran will get there,

Based on your strategy and selections Rate Team 9/10. Good Luck and hope it pays off for you.

Thanks Ringo for you post. Please post your team, I am happy to comment on for you.

It is a gamble expecting 4 rookies to play each week but hopefully given Port should play Wines and Melbourne will play Viney, it will work. Especially this is where the cash is made to upgrade.

Yes rookie selections are not 100% set. I have Rowe and Currie as my Ruck bench.

I too believe Moloney will average 95 - 100. I watched the game the other night and he looked hungry and invigorated. He is what Brisbane need, someone tough in the clinches.

I looked at Duffield's averages over the last part of 2012 and they were consistent scores over 100 - he has to be considered instead of Birchall. Grimes was also consistent towards the latter part of 2012 but you are correct, injury is a concern. I think Watts could be a better choice, especially if he is able to run off half back. He could have a breakout year.

FWDS's - Bartel is a POD's but could go Chappy instead

I have also taken into consideration the byes so I dont have to trade out.

Love the team. My only suggestion is Drop Grimes/Birchall back to a rookie and upgrade a mid rookie to Fyfe.

Is this team better than the first?

GODDARD, GIBBS, DUFFIELD, ATLEY, PITTARD, GOODES, TERLICH, DOCHERTY

ABLETT, SWAN, J SELWOOD, FYFE, MOLONEY, WINES, MITCHELL, CROUCH, OMEARA, VINEY

GOLDY, LEUE, ROWE, CURRIE

COX, ZORKO, ROCKLIFF, BARTEL, WRIGHT, MACAFFER, NEADE, LEE

Hey Lindo

Further to your last post, I'm strongly considering Duffman for Birch at D3 - currently Birchall but like you said, Duffiled was great towards the end of last year. I would consider dropping Grimes to a rookie and getting Ball in the mids, sure there are a lot of good rookie mids but with this strategy I'd want someone a bit more dependable to back up only 3 prems. Not sure if the cash works out but if you can go Grimes > rookie, Jelwood > JPK and maybe Mitchell > Ball I think this would be a good looking team considering the strategy you're running. Jelwood is a great player so don't take the JPK suggestion as a definite, I just think Jelwood will be at the bottom end of the top 10 this year.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAnd while I was typing you changed it! So:
Great looking team, Goldy didn't impress so maybe Ball instead of Fyfe and invest in a better R1 but much of a muchness. See Jelwood comment above.

Would appreciate any thoughts on my side

I have a thread in RMT which may be difficult to find but will post link here - I usually update throughout the season as well,  All my teams have been listed on first thread so the latest one listed is current team .  Will be probably posting another one in the next week.

Duffield would be a sound alternative to Birchill.

Go with your gut feel on Bartel or Chappy as either will be a POD for you.

See you just posted a new team whilst I was typing think latest team has more upside and a little less risky than first,

Consider this
                             Advantage                               Disadvantage.
3 guns mids.      More mid rookies for cash.        Fewer points to start.

5 gun mids.        Higher score early.                    Fewer mid rookies for cash.

4 gun mids.        The best (or worst!) of the above.

Buddha says take the middle path. I'll do 4 - plus a mid pricer I think.

You team is fine but Martin and Selwood may not be best picks compared to others.

Good luck.

I'm not one for "+1" kinda posts, but this is spot on, 4 prem + fyfe is what I'm going with.

Today's 4 1/2 = Ablett, Swan, Danger, Murphy and Moloney.

Who knows who tomorrow will bring?  ::)

PS Murphy - because he is cheap after his early departure from that shoulder gamer last year, will improve anyway and he can handle a tag - except Jones.
