Dane Swan didn't play a game of footy without a possession

North has changed their game style dude, it does not suit Goldy getting possessions

Sorry I forget you're in the loop at North and know their exact game plan...

He doesn't need possessions to score...he averaged 1 less possession in 2012 than his 99 DT average year in 2011. His tackles, hit outs and marks is where he gets his points and that's what was lacking last year.

And for the record (and i'm not saying they are in any way or form the same type of player) Dane Swan and Toddy Goldstein both averaged 99 in DT in their 4th year in the AFL system.

Any player that an average 13.7 possessions a game and still average 99 is a worthy consideration as your #1 DT ruckman.

Time will tell though I guess...

2011 is history and wont earn you one point in 2013. In saying that its still just a dodgey half a game system we are judging a player on so untill the full game stuff gets going i wont get real critical but havent been a fan of Goldys from the get go when for a bit more money you can be more assured of the avg people are seeking from Goldy. A better SC player than DT but the NAB games would have a few pondering him still, no harm in waiting a bit longer to decide.

2011 is history, and history is still the best indicator when we are picking our players for a new season.

How many people do you think would be picking Dane Swan if he didn't have such an awesome DT history?

Goldy has proven he can get a 99 average in DT, he is the only viable ruck option at North, is in his mid 20's and is a bargain priced at 15-20 ppg less than what he should average.

As for his NAB cup...do you really think North was going to push him, give him a load of time on the ground and potentially have him break down or get injured considering they have no realistic back-up ruck options? - They aren't exactly in a position to do that. He will come out fit and firing in round 1.

Yeh fair point mate, Swan is great for your point as many others are. But were discussing someone where there is a fair bit of conjecture as to what he can provide in 2013 playing in a team with a modified game plan which is move the ball as quickly as possible and i dont see Goldy as being a great athlete tbh but your point is well made as we are all still jumping Pendles after a lower avg in 2012. Some can and will get back to past form but my opinion is i dont think Goldy can or produce what people are hoping for in 2013, only one mans opinion and 20 opinions shouldnt sway you if your gut tells you one thing while others say different, always go with your gut. Also agree half game NAB runs shouldnt recieve overly critical opinions as they mean little. Full games are slightly different as they give you more of an opportunity to suss out gameplans etc and more importantly rookie ability but should also be watched as just that NAB Cup stuff, not always the best example of whats to come in the future. For whats it worth i wont be starting with Goldy and can see a significant points advantage by taking a better scoring ruckmen for a few more dollars.

bottom line - you are right he is "capable" of that 2011 average, and at many times in 2012 he had HUGE scores.

but having burnt me in 2012 with all the 50's and 60's and just watching the guy play I won't touch him.

one thing is for sure if you start him and he averages 100 or near enough, you will be the one laughing then :)

isn't that one of the issues? most premium ruckmen get a solid amount of their points from possessions, while goldsteins always gotten large amounts of his points from hit outs.

I'm really not sold on him at this stage.

Could be ok for SC but dont think DT will suit him now the Roo's are moving the ball so much quicker. Still like you id rather look at others than Goldy. Could end up with alot of egg on my face but hey isnt that always a possibility when voicing an opinion.

All I have to say is damn the Eagles for sending Nic Nat off for surgery so late in the preseason

Yeh its a tough one LF, dare say they were hoping it would settle nicely over the break as they can but obviously once back in training it was clear it wasnt going to. Certainly weaker without him but Cox will carry the can while Nics away and he'll be back soon enough that no real damage will be done. your getting a couple of fwd's back for rnd 1 so Cox shouldnt be missed to much up there with extra time on the ball.

All true Grazz
but I`m talking from a fantasy point of view Nic Nat being fit means he`d be a lock for rucks and we would probably be not even having this discussion lol

I have him, not athletic like a cox/nic nat but still a pretty good mover for a big guy, and gets his hit outs with jump and reach so can see the new rules suiting him better than the guys who like to wrestle. Just got given a new contract for whats its worth and has no competition as the number 1 ruckman at the crows. But don't tell everyone, ill pay for the extra 50k for a guy I think will average 10 points more than goldy.
