2013 Kuala Lumpur Fairest & Best Awards Night
Updated Fri Jan 17, 2014

As the players launch into the new year, we look back at the Kuala Lumpur Fairest and Best Awards Night held in October last year.

It was a night full of glitz and glamour, with an early focus being the red carpet and of course... the wives and partners.

Scott Pendlebury continued to impress both on and off the footy field as per usual...

As did Vice Captain Bryce Gibbs...

Most players attended the night, with only a few apologies. Tom Bellchambers unexpectedly caught a nasty case of gastro and was unable to make it.

Now, down to business.

Voting throughout the night proved to be a roller coaster ride with many monster scores being posted by players across the board. Scott Pendlebury was an early favourite before the night but it was the General in defence Harry Taylor who led after the first 5 rounds. Harry spent much of the year in defence but also got opportunities forward where he produced every time.

Harry's moment was short lived though, as young gun Luke Parker quickly took over after a stellar start to the year. Head Coach Ricochet was very pleased with Luke's progress and expected him to be more attacking in 2014 by spending more time in the forward line. He piled on 13 votes over the first 14 rounds and produced some massive performances. But this was the business end of the season and this is when superstars stand up... enter Scott Pendlebury.

The Club Captain piled on 9 votes over the last 5 games to snatch the lead and eventually the Croc Medal. Within his season Scott also managed to produce a massive 200pt game which currently holds the record within the Kuala Lumpur club. Another young star in Tom Liberatore finished second with 16 votes while Parker, Gibbs and Taylor rounded out the top 5. See all the votes as they were polled below:

In Scott's acceptance speech he was very humble and thanking of the Club and family,

"We have already built a great culture here in KL" he said,

"and even though this was only our first year we are all grateful for everything the club has done for us."

Coach Ricochet also said a few words to those in attendance. He spoke highly of the playing group but also gave a stern warning to those at the club and the competition as a whole,

"Although we have a lot of kids on our list and this was our first year within the Asian Competition, we need to be bigger and better next year"

"We have set a solid foundation, it is now time to build on it"

The night was full of celebration and went without major incident. Although we did notice someone sneak in a side door earlier in the night, but we couldn't quite tell who it was...

2013 Player Reviews: Scott Pendlebury

Position: Midfield

2013 Average: 145.5

2013 Games: 22

Review: A huge year from the Kuala Lumpur Captain as he lead his young chargers from the front. Pendlebury enjoyed a super consistent year with only one score under 100 in Round 18 when Whiley kept him to only 25 touches. But with 15 scores of 140 or more, including a massive 200, it is easy to see why Pendlebury is considered a modern day superstar. Pendlebury was rewarded for his stella season after being selected in the 2013 All-Asian Team, finishing 5th in highest averaging players across the competition, and is hot favourite for the 2013 Croc Medallist.

2013 Player Reviews: Steele Sidebottom

Age: 22     Height: 180cm     Weight: 85kg

Position: Midfield

2013 Average: 129

2013 Games: 22

Season Scores:

Review: Kuala Lumpur finally got there man. Steele Sidebottom is a gun. Full Stop. The End. Need we say any more? Slightly down on his 137 average from 2012, he still enjoyed another great year in the Asian Tournament averaging 129. This still placed him inside the top 30 midfielders of the comp! And at just 22 years old! Steele was given a lot more attention in 2013 and was tagged effectively on a few occasions but when he is standing alongside Scott Pendlebury, we expect him to overcome this hurdle. After all, he is learning from the best. 2013 also saw Steele spend quite a bit of time forward, with at least 7 games where he definitely started forward or spent time forward. This could see the midfielder gain forward status, but it might be wishful thinking. One interesting note is Steele's friendship with the Vietnam Vipers' Dayne Beams. It may be only a coincidence but despite being in completely different teams, in different countries and more than 2000kms apart... Steele's level of performances were directly related to whether or not Dayne played (for the Vipers). When Beams did play in 2013, Steele averaged a massive 140! Placing him inside the top 8 midfielders in the comp! So please oh please Vietnam, look after Beams and give him a full season in 2014. Or just trade him to Kuala Lumpur

Position: Midfield

2013 Average: 126.4

2013 Games: 22

Review: What a breakout year for young Libba. He certainly grabbed the attention of a few in the industry after increasing his average from 100 to 126 in what was a very impressive 2013. He also finished the home and away season on top of the contested possession leaderboard and also the clearances leaderboard. Not bad for a 3rd year player. Much like Sidebottom and Smith,Tom must have really enjoyed his mid season bye as his 2nd half of the season was also huge. On returning after Round 11 he posted a 138 average over the remaining 12 games of the season! In Round 14 we saw just how high Tom's ceiling really is after he posted a huge score of 191. And just to prove it wasn't a fluke, he did it again in Round 18 (190)... and again in Round 21 (194)!! In fact he posted 7 scores over 150 during the year. Consistency is a concern but at just 21 years old he has a few years left in him develop.

2013 Player Reviews: Shane Savage

Age: 22     Height: 185cm     Weight: 82kg

Position: Midfield

2013 Average: 91.8

2013 Games: 15

Season Scores:

Review: The Crocodiles are very excited to see what 2014 brings for young Shane Savage. Full of potential and ability, Savage has always been held back by the Substitute Rule (introduced across all XVs competitions in 2011). If we look deeply into Savage's modest average of 92 in 2013 we can see why those at Kuala Lumpur are getting excited for 2014. First of all, 5 of his 15 games this year were sub affected, severely hindering his overall average. If we take these games out Shane's average jumps from 92 to a very nice 118! Second, of the 6 of his 10 full games he actually started forward/played forward (he also kicked 3 goals in the 7th game), giving him a very very good chance of starting forward for the Crocs in 2014. All in all it was a solid season for Shane and we at Kuala Lumpur cannot wait to see what his 2014 brings.

2013 Player Reviews: Bryce Gibbs

Age: 24     Height: 188cm     Weight: 85kg

Position: Midfield

2013 Average: 117.8

2013 Games: 19

Season Scores:

Review: 2013 proved to be an interesting year for Bryce Gibbs. The Vice Captain of the Crocodiles was often thrown around up forward, down back or through the midfield depending on the needs of the team. He posted a modest average of 117, which included an injury affected game (120ave unsubbed), but fell away at the end of the year after a superb start. But boy oh boy did he go bang at the start. Bryce averaged a mammoth 139 unsubbed in the first 10 games of the year to put himself right up there with the best defenders in the league (by a long long way). A second half fade out saw him drop to a 117 average which still placed him as a top 5 defender in the Asian Competition. Gibbs was often required to start in defence on multiple occasions and did it well, giving many the indication he will do so again in 2014. For Bryce personally he is hoping that in 2014 he will to get back to his former heights of a 143ave in 2011 and 140ave in 2010 to really stamp his authority on the competition

2013 Player Reviews: Luke Parker

Age: 21     Height: 183cm     Weight: 86kg

Position: Forward/Midfield

2013 Average: 113.7

2013 Games: 22

Season Scores:

Review: What a breakout year for young Luke Parker. In just his 3rd year he boosted his average from 85 to a respectable 114. The young midfielder certainly showed the Asian community what he was capable of too, posting four 140+ scores in his 2013 season. Inconsistency is commonly seen in young players and there are a few areas Luke needs to work on in order to stamp the quieter games out of his season. None the less Kuala Lumpur are very impressed with the improvement Parker showed this year and are expecting more improvement in 2014.

2013 Player Reviews: Gary Ablett Jnr

Age: 29     Height: 182cm     Weight: 87kg

Position: Midfield

2013 Average: 151.57

2013 Games: 21

Season Scores:

Review: It was another huge year for the Little Master (nickname given to Gary Ablett Jnr for his mastery of Karate while living in Asia). The 2013 Oriental Medallist enjoyed another big season posting a 151 average across 21 games. In fact, he was averaging a massive 162! until injuries started to take their toll later in the season. It's no secret, Gary Ablett Jnr is a genuine superstar. So when Kuala Lumpur got wind of his willingness to leave Taiwan, the Crocs left no stone unturned in order to find a suitable deal to get the Little Master across to Kuala Lumpur. There are rumours that Head Coach Ricochet may use his prize recruit up forward more in 2014, which will only improve his scoring in the Asian Competition and increase his chances for M/F status in 2015! Exciting times ahead for the Crocs.

2014 CW Preseason Cap
Updated Tues March 25, 2014

The Kuala Lumpur Crocodiles have secured their first piece of silverware after taking out the 2014 CW Preseason Cap.

Named after the Inaugural Administrator of the AXVs Competition, Colliwobblers, this competition ran through February and March in a lead up to the 2014 AXVs Premiership Season.

Kuala Lumpur were lucky enough to have a majority of their senior players available right through the competition as they breezed into the Semi Finals.

"If they are fit they will play" Co-Head Coach Ricochet stated.

"We are taking no prisoners this year and will be firing on all cylinders for Round 1"

"This competition is the perfect preparation"

The 1st Semi Final proved to be a little more difficult with a close fought 59 point win over the Laos Elephants. KL were without star recruit Gary Ablett but it did not matter as young stars Josh Caddy (161) and Koby Stevens (157) stood up to lead the team into the 2014 CW Preseason Final.

But in order to take home the Preseason Cap, KL would face a big challenge in the form of the 2013 Preseason Premiers, the UAE Tigers. UAE had recruited strongly over the off season and were considered a strong contender in the 2014 Premiership Season.

However the Crocodiles seem to have a new hunger in 2014 and oh boy were they ruthless. Gary Ablett Jnr reminded the competition he is still #1 by posting a huge 185 as captain. Scott Pendlebury (165), Corey Enright (148), Jack Darling (142) and Luke Dahlhaus (141) were also superb as Kuala Lumpur cruised to a 313 point victory.

Congratulations to the 2014 CW Preseaon Cap Premiers and bring on the 2014 Premiership Season!
