Brisbane's replacement for Drummond?

Who will step in for drummonds role in the backline? the void must be filled, does this influence docherty JS?

Ringo

If I was selecting Brisbanes half back line atm based on training and intra club trial it would be Golby, Docherty and Rich.  Docherty has really stepped up and blanketed Zorko out of Intra club trial.

Benus

Hey guys, I'm kinda new here but thought I'd just add my thoughts on the Bris backline:

Key position wise, maguire will play on the big forwards week in week out, he had a huge year last year and will be looking to repeat that again this year. Merrett and Patfull will play on the other key forwards. Patfull is an absolute lock (for the lions - not SC!!) in the back half, coming off a career-best year and a club B&F. Can play big and small. Merrett will probably be sent back to his comfort zone & play more at fullback than he did last year but may still get some forward time. Staker, when fit, is likely to continue his utility role; however, based on how the lions have used him in the past, I feel like he will spend a fair bit more time forward than back. McKeever won't get games unless at least one of these guys gets hurt.

That leaves 3-4 spots for small defenders, maybe even 5 if we are forced to run a loose man against say WCE, who love having Hurn/Waters loose. In that case Vossy would probably use Adcock > Rich > McGrath > Hanley as the loosey.

So keeping in mind that the back/fwd pockets really tend to play more like back/fwd flankers nowadays, who would get a game first?

I think Rich will still play mid; however, if they want to use him outside more then he's probably more likely to play wing than half-back flank. Even if he does play half-back, I dont think he'll be selected exclusively as a half-back flanker at the expense of one of our "specialist" half back flankers.

Hanley has been doing a bit of training with the midfield group - has made a big impression on Brent Moloney - and may float between his usual half back flank and the wing this season. He has good kicking skills and, although the aren't on the same level as drummond, his running capacity is superior and I think he will essentially be the new drummond (back when he tore shower up), albeit in a different mould.

Adcock will probably rotate into the mids for a bit every now and then while the 3 Rs, blacky, moloney, rainesy etc have a breather but will play 80% or more in the backs.

Guys like Harwood (back pocket) and Yeo (back flank) probs struggling to get a game in the absence of any injuries.

So if I had to rank them in terms of JS, it would be Hanley/Adcock/McGrath > Golby > Docherty > Harwood > Yeo > Rest.

I think if vossy selected the team tomorrow, all of Maguire, Merrett, Patfull, Hanley, Adcock, Mcgrath & Golby would be in it, with Docherty 95% likely too. When Staker is fit again add him to that mix too (selected primarily as a utility primarily to play fwd).

Explanation: Hanley is an absolute gun. He is pretty much my favourite lions player so I may be a bit biased, but he is definitely a lock in the brisbane team regardless. Adcock = senior player, consistent, potential co-captain. McGrath has provided a lot of run off half back over the years but will also be used as a pinch hitting small forward on occasion. Be interesting to see how this drug scandal regarding his cousin pans out - if shower somehow gets back to Ash McGrath, then Docherty's JS will be even better. Docherty has been tearing it up, he's in the top 5ish in fitness at the club now, he's a high draft pick who they really wanna blood ASAP after a strong season in the NEAFL last year following his recovery from injury and as ringo said he killed it at the intraclub. If all these guys are fit, he could be a chance of the vest though. Golby had a good season for a young lad in the AFL last year, has solid left foot skills off half back and vossy loves him.

Well that's just my 2 cents worth, can't say I've been down to any lions' trainings recently though so a lot of my speculation regarding roles in 2013 is based off hearsay/stuff I've read.

Nice write up Benus and agree with most of what you said.

Back 3 will be set barring injury will be set as Maguire, Merrett and Patful.

Only issue I have is that McGrath has been training with forwards and running there in the Intra club trial.  Whilst he has given that run in the past I think that may now go to Docherty or Golby who both have that little bit of speed.

This would be my Brisbane Team if selecting now for Round 1.

FB: Matt Maguire, Daniel Merrett, Joel Patfull
HB: Mitchell Golby, Sam Docherty, Daniel Rich
C: Tom Rockliff, Jed Adcock, Pearce Hanley
HF:Dayne Zorko, Jonathan Brown, Joshua Green
FF: Ryan Lester,Aaron Cornelius , Rohan Bewick
Fol: Matthew Leuenberger, Brent Moloney, Jack Redden
Int: Simon Black , Andrew Raines, Claye Beams, Ash McGrath/Stefan Martin

Nice team Ringo, exciting times ahead for the Lions.

+1: that's gotta be pretty close to on the money, pending NAB form over some of the borderline players. I'm kinda new to the forum so wondering how I actually give you a plus one? Haha

Without wanting to go too far off the topic of this thread re bris's backline & docherty, would be interested to discuss a few of the selections there/pick your brain a bit.

Point re McGrath is very valid & I think developing those guys at HB is a big priority for vossy right now so... spot on.

For me, guys under the most pressure would be Green, Lester, Bewick & Cornelius.

Green is an interesting one, reports of him tearing up the track over the summer probably mean you're right to put him in but I think if he scrubs it up in the NAB there could be some significant pressure from guys like polec, karnezis and mayes. that being said he is more of a "genuine" small forward (cf. running HFF, ie, DPP style player) and might get a look in to play that specific role.

Polec and Mayes are probably the two most notable absences for me. Top draft picks. Important players for the club's future. Is the reason why they aren't in the NAB cup team this week because they're injured or just being rested like hanley? Or not training so well over the pre-season?

Cornelius is also tricky, apart from a couple of games here and there he's struggled to make an impact week-to-week in the AFL season despite tearing up the NEAFL. He did tear it up in the intraclub but my personal opinion is that Martin as the forward/back up ruck would be slightly ahead of him. I feel like these FWD/back-up ruck players are a huge deal in the AFL right now. Question marks over whether vossy would be happy going into a game with merrett as the only real back-up ruck option for the very injury prone leuenberger.

That midfield is shaping up very nicely with the new recruit of moloney. Can just imagine the clearance dominance if we put redden, moloney and black all in at the same time - would be massive overkill though. Obviously blacky has had some difficulties and may not be up in time but assuming fit is of course locked. Interesting that you've put adcock as C, with the captaincy now do you feel like he'll play more in the midfield like he used to? Maybe more SC relevant & a more stable/consistent option than a hamish hartlett type at a similar price?

Penny for your thoughts :P

I'm thinking Mitch Golby, will replace Josh Drummond down back at the Lions

Yeah that's got to be just about spot on, although I also believe Martin would be slightly ahead of Cornelius.

As to who replaces Drummond (although there will never be anyone who can kick as good as him), I would say either Hanley or Golby.

meow meow

Staker has already replaced him as the rehab group king.

yup

Considering he rarely played, is a replacement really needed?

Hey what do u guys think of Patty Karnezis? Seems to be playing a friendly DT/SC role on the wing. What do u think his JS is like? And will he play the same role in the regular season?
