Just got home from the trial.

Here is the live transcript from Lions for interest:

and a second update on Berger based on an interview with Rocky.

Ringos observations though:
A few interesting change of positions Polkinghorne playing in defence and McKeever forward initially,
Karnezis playing off a half back wing. Jordan Bourke played back on Brown for first half,
Berger played only the first half of the trial and probably spent only a third of that time in the ruck with rest time spend forward.  Looks fit but timing of a little when in rucks - outgunned by Longer a couple of time as well.  Will not play NAB cup till rounds 2 or 3 as part of managing him. Polec also only payed 1st half.
Martin also spent limited time in ruck spending his time forward.
Of the younger brigade Docherty and Yeo were very strong of HB line, Golby showed no inconvenience in his foot and performed strongly. All three will push for selection for the Round 1 team
Mayes played well at times Beams was sound in midfield and Paporone after a strong first half was a little subdued
in second half.
Moloney showed great keenness and played really well in the mids could be a smokey for FF teams.
Rockliff played in the mid field and was the leader of the red mids so should be a lock at forward in FF,
Based on the trial there appears to be a   to be a 3 way fight for the 2nd tall between Lisle, Cornelius and Paparone.  Maybe Longer as well in the mix as he rucked whole game for red team and looked great. (Longer has really muscled up in the off season). Keep an eye on Paparone if not named maybe a handy downgrade option in due course,
Of the older brigade McGrath had a reasonable game but Banfield was disappointing not getting a touch at all that I could see. Raines and Reddan played their usual tough games.

Great hit out for the guys,

Cicjose

so who is going to be the second tall target up forward? i dont like the idea of Lisle Corneilus or Paparone as the second tall forward

Ringo

#2
Watch the NAB cup Cic. Cornelius was the standout of the three at the trial but would not surprise to see us use a Berger/Longer combo until Staker comes back. Cornelius took a couple of strong contested marks on Patful. Martin may be an option but he did not show a lot today.

Windigo

Cheers for the insight Ringo.

Pretty keen on Paparone, looks a talent.

...TBH I dunno why they have persisted with Banfield.  :-\

GM

Nice reporting Ringo,
By your report it looks promising for Docherty come rd1.
Lets hope he takes his opportunity in the Nab.

Good job Ringo, sounds like the boys got a good hit out today.

Interesting to see Polkinghorne used off the half back line. I don't mind it actually, he could be a good fit down there. Banfield was disappointing which is sad because he has such great potential as a small forward to really make an impact on games.

Ringo

Interesting to see the clubs official match report.

Agree with it all except Martin being one of the better players thought he was a little ordinary myself.  Crisp I missed from my report but I see it difficult for him to force his way in.  Crisp is another who has muscled up over the off season.

tbagrocks

The Gabba is just not big enough to fit in all the half back players

Ringo

Yes tbag competition for spots will be intense for the first time in a number of years.  So barring injury will help the Lions climb this year.

Bewick went quite well as well.  Played in the mid field and with Raines tagging Rocky was given a bit of freedom and showed what he can do. Was amongst the better players for red team so will be pushing for a bench spot. His disposals which have been a worry in the past showed improvement.

Grazz

Thanks Ringo made for a good read. The bit about Rocky was very pleasing.  ;D
