Memph's Mid Price Mania

I've noticed I've spent a lot of time looking at cheaper mid price option this season especially in defence and attack and so I thought I'd start a thread about it.

Without the Gold Coast and GWS rookies we are a bit light on for cheap players in our def and forwards so picking the right mid-pricers could prove the difference for you team this season.

Here's my list of mid-price improvers for this season (breakout isn't quite right I feel as some of these players have already had breakout seasons and are returning from injuries.)

By big improver I mean should increase there average significantly - by between 15-25ppg. Some of these players obviously may increase a lot more than this due to a lack of opportunities previously, or a return from injury.

Ignoring the rookie range (anyone below $200K) and those close to the premium range. I have included the dual pos players in the position where you're most likely to pick them (eg Pederson in defence) although is some cases either line would probably be appropriate (Bock).

Defenders

  • Michael Hibberd ($342,800)
  • Chris Yarran ($311,400)
  • Ben Jacobs ($311,000)
  • Cam Pederson ($296,200)
  • Jordan Russell ($264,300)
  • Jeremy Laidler ($235,700)
  • Richard Tambling ($208,100)

Midfielders

  • Travis Boak ($431,300)
  • Jack Ziebell ($406,400)
  • Luke Hodge ($398,600)
  • David Swallow ($380,400)
  • Luke Ball ($343,100)
  • Josh Caddy ($328,600)
  • Brent Moloney ($309,800)
  • Shane Savage ($285,700)
  • Andrew Embley ($264,300)
  • Kane Lucas ($251,200)
  • Lachie Neale ($216,900)
  • Koby Stevens ($204,800)

Rucks

  • Zac Smith ($300,700)
  • Matt Leuenberger ($233,600)
  • Nathan Vardy ($209,200)
  • Setanta O'Hailpin ($157,700)

Forwards

  • Arryn Siposs ($325,000)
  • Josh Jenkins ($316,100)
  • Steven Motlop ($302,300)
  • Levi Casboult ($283,600)
  • Nathan Bock ($282,800)
  • Josh J Kennedy ($272,300)
  • Chris Knights ($254,500)
  • Kieran Harper ($253,200)
  • Andrew Krakouer ($243,200)
  • Mark Nicoski ($236,00)
  • Travis Varcoe ($234,400)
  • Shannon Byrnes ($229,300)
  • John Butcher ($206,100)
  • Shaun McKernan ($202,600)
  • Todd Banfield ($197,100)

Feel free to post anyone you think should be added to the list and/or reasons why.

Please note I'm not advocating you should pick these players - this is just a list of players I think will improve by 15-20ppg.

In my opinion when deciding to pick a mid-pricer you need to weigh up a number of things, the main one being whether you think their improvement will be worth their high starting price (compared to a rookie). Whether that is to make you cash, allow you to upgrade to a premium faster or you think they will turn into a keeper (85-90 avg for def, 100+ avg for mid).

*Players who have been added to the initial list are in bold

Sorry for bumping but this thread got lost in all the pre-season updates posted from the Herald Sun's website.

Thoughts on my list anyone?

Jukes

Siposs qualify at 325k? He's defs on my radar, great shot at filling Goddard's role, could go 90+.

Some things should be left unsaid :-X ;)

I got an eye on Andy Otten well at aroung 250k, should he make the 22 he will be a decent pick, sliming down trying to get good agility back, should be fitter this year

Nice list! Been trying to squeeze Jenkins into my fwds. Set for a big year as Kurt Tippett 2.0

Didn't really look above $325K in price but I'm happy to extend it up to $350K or under so i'll include him.

Nice pick up Jukes :D

Edit: Siposs was a forward doh. Still will put him in.

Didn't have Otten on the list because I was worried about his durability. But, could be one to improve. Will take a look and see in NAB Cup before adding him I think.

Interestingly though Otten is the fourth most experienced defender at the Crows after Rutten, Reilly and Tambling.

Ps - Any added players are in bold.

If he plays in Goddard's position in NAB Cup he'll be very hard to ignore.

Ok so he's a bit above a mid-price but I'm thinking rather than start multiple threads i'll keep all my thoughts together in one so I can keep an eye on them.

I'm going to reveal one of my smokies to start this season and I can't believe I haven't seen more chatter surrounding him so far this pre-season.

I've decided to bring Jonathon Brown ($409,600) him into my team today because of Stevie J's Rd 1 suspension.

The reasons are as follows:

Brown is a proven DT gun although he's had a few down season due to injuries. But he showed last season that he's definitely not past it.

He plays the Western Bulldogs, Adelaide and Gold Coast Suns in the first three. Then North Melbourne and the Melbourne. This is a perfect start to the season, equally as good as Reiwoldt's IMO.

He's likely to score very well in at least three of these games and there's no reason why he couldn't also do well against Adelaide and the Kangaroos.

Last season he scored 146 versus GWS and 130 vs Melbourne. He also averaged 10 marks against the Bulldogs last season (in two games) and booted 5 goals in one game (0 in the other). And against North Melbourne he also grabbed 10 marks (and in 2011 against them he took 11 marks and booted 4 goals.

He tends to monster weaker defences/teams (last season he kicked 4 or more goals against Melbourne, GWS, Richmond and Port Adelaide) and I can see his price rising after the first five weeks.

Then in round six i'll look at my options but will consider trading him for Stevie J.

Holz

Richard Tambling at a little over 200k. If named round 1 has to be worth a sneaky look 70k more than the likes of pittar and goodes, will see when adealide field a better squad but taken before buddy in the draft.

Surely that means he is better than buddy, 100+ on the cards than ;)
