I'm sure that just about everyone has seen the squad announced for the ODIs now, but if you haven't the 13 man squad is below. Here's my in-depth take on the side.

George Bailey (captain)
Ben Cutting
Xavier Doherty
Aaron Finch
Brad Haddin
Phillip Hughes
David Hussey
Mitchell Johnson
Usman Khawaja
Glenn Maxwell
Clint McKay
Steve Smith
Mitchell Starc

Warner, Wade and Clarke have all been given a rest. Clarkey obviously needed it with his hammy, but not sure why you would leave our two most explosive batsmen out when they don't look like they need a rest. Looks like the rotation policy is coming into the batsmen as well ::)

Mike Hussey has been left out which is extremely disappointing that he doesn't get a farewell series. We can hope he is given a farewell game when Perth gets an ODI which I believe is early February against the West Indies. Invararity said that they are looking to the 2015 world cup so want to blood some youth instead, but then why is Brad Haddin back in the team over Tim Paine? I tell you this guy has lost the plot.

For the batsmen, it's good to see Phil Hughes and Aaron Finch getting a go, as these two could become quite good one day players in my opinion. Both have been in great Ryobi One Day Cup form this summer and I believe are the two highest run scorers this season so far. I don't know how Khawaja, who I see as more of a test prospect, and Steve Smith (god help us), who doesn't even play cricket, got in over Callum Ferguson. Good to see Bailey still in as he is a decent bat (he has actually been our highest scorer over the past year in ODIs) and a good leader for when Clarke is out. D.Hussey stays in as always, and Glenn Maxwell also still plays.

The bowling attack is interesting, but I think well structured. Starc has shown a lot of promise in the limited overs games and he is in good form, and Mitch Johnson never really lost form with the white ball, and both are very good lower order batsmen. From last summer Clint Mackay is still in the team, and again he is a good white ball player. Ben Cutting gets a go, which is long overdue IMO, as he can pinch hit very well and is a very encouraging young quick. I would've liked to have seen John Hastings and James Pattinson in the side though, but I think Patto is just coming back from his injury? Xavier Doherty is picked as the spinner, as he was in the UAE, he goes alright I think.
So this is the 11 I would run with for the first match, on Friday at the MCG.

1. Finch
2. Haddin (WK)
3. Hughes
4. Khawaja
5. D.Hussey
6. Bailey (C)
7. Maxwell
8. Johnson
9. Cutting
10. Starc
11. Mackay

Play the four quicks and Maxwell and D. Hussey can make up the 10 overs of spin to go along with it.

Overall I am disappointed with the team named and I really think Wade/Paine, Warner, M.Hussey and Ferguson should have been named, but I don't really mind the bowling attack. What are other people's thoughts?

It's funny how they say their planning for the 1015 world cup and then select Hadden :o

Cicjose

To prepare for the next world cup they should be picking guys like:

Scott Henry (BAT), Chris Lynn (BAT), Joe Burns (BAT)

Peter Handscomb (WK)

Cameron Boyce (BOWL), Kane Richardson (BOWL)

James Faulkner (AR) Mitch Marsh (AR) Nathan -Coulter Nile (AR) Moises Henriques (AR)

Only Cutting, Smith, Khawaja, Maxwell and Starc will be in the prime of their careers come the World Cup, in that current One Day Squad

tbagrocks

How old's Finch? Also I can't believe Paine was left out, and why is Furgason over looked? Don't think Mitch Marsh will be likely to play this summer and that's a pitty really!

The cup's only two years away, Dave Hussey might not make it and nether Haddin, the rest are still young enough to make it

Cicjose

#4
Finch is currently 26 (28)

but the ages of the players on my radar (world cup ages assuming its February 2015)

Henry 23 (26), Lynn 22 (24), Burns, 23 (25)

Handscomb 21 (24)

Boyce 23 (24), Richardson 21 (23)

Faulkner 22 (23), Marsh 21 (23), Coulter Nile 25 (27) Henriques 25 (28)

Thanks for quoting my post above Cic. :)

I would also like to see some young talent like Ferguson, and a few all rounders like Marsh, Faulkner and Henriques. If the selectors actually got their heads together and picked the right team, we could actually have a good squad by the time the World Cup comes around.

Mailman the 2nd

Glenn Maxwell is a spinner isn't he? That's 3 in the squad then, although I guess you could consider Smith and Maxwell general all-rounders.

I think Lyon has reason to fear for his selection next test series

Especially when he did bugger all while Herath and Dilshan were doing great.

He probably could have picked someone better.... But still Lyon is the best spinner in the country and I think the selectors would rather go with a specialist spinner in a test team. We could go alright though with a 4 man pace attack and a spinning allrounder.

Still I think Lyon is safe and he has only ever really been used in test matches.

Cic, i know most people follow the Aussies, but how about you add the Sri Lankan Squad to the original post? :) I have it here for you, there are some nice inclusions.

M.Jayawardene (c)

D.Chandimal
A.Dananjaya (19yo Spinning All Rounder)
T.Dilshan
S.Eranga
HEEEEEEEERRRRRAAAAAAAATTTTTTHHHHHH!!!!!!!
N.Kulasekera

L.Malinga
A.Mendis (He's a beast)

Kushal Janith Perera (Back up Keeper)

Perera, Malinga, both Mendis', Mathews, Dilshan, Jayawardene. It won't be a blowover, especially since Australia's bets players aren't playing.
