I don't 247 is going to be enough as it looks like we will drop this game as well losing the series to Sri Lanka 3-1. I haven't seen such an ordinary Australian side since the mid 80's when we were rebuilding after Marsh, Lillee and G Chappell retired. We are just ordinary in Tests, ODI and 20/20.

We can't play swing bowling and we will be in England in 4 months after the tour of India where we need a spinner that will flight the ball. Lyon doesn't do this so do we go back to Krejza (what has happened to him) who does flight the ball. Usman Khawaja must go to India if he does't the selectors should be sacked. Bird must go to India and England. Cowen surely must be on his last legs as I do not see Khawaja a replacement for Hussey but a replacement for Cowen instead. Watson can open with Warner then Hughes and Khawaja at 4. |The selectors then need to find the No 6. My thinking is to go Hussey to Hussey in David. Ok he's 35 but no other player is putting his hand atm.

Also thanks to ABC Grandstand eariler today: The Aussies average 236 at Hobart batting first. I didn't get the win % from that but it means they either hate batting first at the oval, or it's just a low scoring wicket. :-\

I thought that was the overall average score?

Clint McKay's slower ball is easier to pick than Barbara Streisand's nose. He grunts more than Venus Williams at only 106kph  ::)

Well a good win there thanks to Phil Hughes with another good ton and a good all round bowling performance. Meaningless ODI series really, still not very happy with a draw overall, but will take it.

Aussies win, their bowling has been top class all series (except Adelaide game) but just their batting they need to sort out

Btw Maxwell is a spud, doesn't contribute anything to the team, Christian is way better and brings more to the table

I agree on Maxwell, at the moment he is just reminding me wayyyyy too much of Steve Smith. Christian and Henriques are better allrounders for mine.

Just to let you all know Thunderstorms are predicted in Sydney for Australia Day and therefore do not expect to watch any of the game

Now I am prepared to be struck down here, but what do we think of Xav Doherty? Has been the mainstay spinner for the one day side, but has received very little recognition. Does anyone think he has the potential to become a Test spinner? I'm thinking for maybe the second Ashes series at the earliest.

BB67th

I think it is a very valid question to consider Doherty for test selection. But I feel he is like Clint McKay in that he is a bery good limited overs bowler, but doesn't have wht it takes at tests. He is good at keeping down economy and getting a wicket from batsmen hitting out from scoreboard pressure. But I think he doesn't create enough pressure of his own and doesn't look threatening enough to take big bags of test wickets. He played last Ashes and didn't really impress me, but then again no one did last Ashes......

Sapientia

Every criticism of Lyon applies to Doherty*10. The guy bowls straight pies.

Sapientia

However if Doherty could bowl like he did in his early career (as seen here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JpfFKL8OZFE) he'd be a more legitimate test option.

Watching that video just highlights what a loss Dan Cullen was. The best finger spinner we'd produced in ages and he just lost it.

What does everything think of Wade opening as he did yesterday?

I actually quite like it, as him and Warner can be a very aggressive opening partnership and get us off to a great start. I think Hughes is good at 3, as he can be attacking if he comes in later, or as he was yesterday he can play the anchor role for the innings and bat through.

You know the more I am seeing of Phil Hughes, the more I think he can become a real long term number 3 option for us in test matches and ODIs.

Two ODI tons batting three already! Says it all really, still worried for him in England but he should be up for the challegne

He's had a good summer hasn't he. I think the selectors knew about his great improvement and I'm fairly sure they shielded him from the South African quicks. He just needs to keep the momentum through India and then overcome the English problems he had last time. i am sure that this time in England he will improve on last time as he has changed his technique for the better.
