G'day guys,

season 2013 will be my first semi-serious season after playing the last two socially (read: making up the numbers). I thought this deserves it's own thread because I've tried to build a semi-interesting team and some of my picks deserve some justification, on review I've rabbited on abit.  I think over time I'm going to have more player differentiation however want enough conformity to not be at odds with every opposition line up.

This is my team at this point in time - my main point of interest and deliberation is my compilation of established players. Rookie selections in December are problematic at best - I've chosen both Menzel and Vlatstuin to give more wriggle-room in my allotted rookie budget.
I've employed the rookie-premium strategy and tried to pick premiums whom will be either high-scoring players or consistent players; with more emphasis on consistency.

Brendon Goddard (B/C), Bryce Gibbs (B/C), Hamish Hartlett (B/C), Mitch Golby, Nick Vlastuin (B/C), Brett Goodes (B/C),
Clay Cameron (B/F), Dean Terlich

Gary Ablett, Scott Pendleberry, Josh Kennedy, Trent Cotchin, Nathan Fyfe, Kane Mitchell, Brad Crouch, Jaeger O'Meara,
Jack Viney, Sam Colquhoun (B/C)

Shane Mumford, Matthew Leuenberger, Brodie Grundy, Liam McBeam (F/R)

Buddy Franklin, Nic Naitanui (F/R), Tom Rockliff (C/F), Daisy Thomas (C/F), Troy Menzel (C/F), Brent Staker (D/F),
Sam Kerridge (C/F), Tom Lee

$11,100 remaining

Defence: Hartlett v. Grimes will be another one to look at during the coming months, both have pros and cons - I'm not going to consider it until a later date.
I'm unsure about Mitch Golby - but a good price and some promise of a breakout year has him selected at this stage; I'm slightly worried about my selections of numerous Brisbane players, too. Last year they played exceedingly well and I'm not 100% sure they'll progress to pose a serious challenge for the top 8.
An alternative which hasn't really been discussed is to play-around with the rookies to derrive enough cash to trade Golby for Dyson Heppell - I chose him last season - despite depreciating 50k over the year he played quite well and towards the end of the season played more in the midfield, perhaps due to Stanton falling off the SC Point Cliff or general injuries. Depending on placement in the NAB Cup I'm still considering him. I rate Heppell well, despite smallish frame and horrid haircut

Midfield: I'm relatively happy; will consider either Swan/Pendleberry/Beams in the coming months. I've added Fyfe for curiosity and hype from last season - I'm not overly happy with anyone priced ~550k - Hodge seams good value at 450k though, but thats to be determined.
I'm happy to put the rookie listed Kane Mitchell in my squad, I think he's a robust player who could score similarly to Sam Gibson did last year; good build and a good fit.

Watson? Joel Sellwood? Boyd good value? Mitchell? Thomson? hmmm

Rucks: I'm happy to pencil Mumford in at the moment; I was happy with how he played in the last few rounds and the finals; if I'm not 100% I'll be unoriginal and pick Todd Goldstein. Last season I picked Mumford and that turned out average; traded to Nic Nat early on - I'm hoping for a trade-free ruck set up.

Forwards: I'm not 100% sold on Buddy Franklin at the given price, however I'd imagine he'll be playing in our finals and will score well most weeks.
I'v picked NicNat over Cox purely because of age (Cox's averages slightly down on 2011) and where both players played last year; from memory Cox spent more time forward? slightly worried about NicNat's pre season and longlivity however they're perfect substitutes; will reconsider towards the end of the NAB Cup.
Similar story with Daisy Thomas and Stevie Johnson; picked Daisy as I'd imagine Geelong will decline this coming season, however Stevie J may play more up the ground as did in 2012 which may prove to be more lucrative, will address towards the end of the NAB Cup. I don't like watching Daisy play but on occasion scores well.

Overall, my main issue at the moment is whether I've given myself enough wiggle-room to snatch players of great value who perform well in the first half of the season before I can cash in my cows - most of my premiums are in the most expensive bracket however lower-priced premiums at the minute are largely unappealing. Or, Have I chosen too many high-priced midfield premiums whom will slightly depreciate over the season and chosen no premiums who will slightly appreciate?

First thing mate, welcome to FF, hope you enjoy it and participate in alot of forums and threads

on your team, Nicnats groin and daisy's ankle is a concern at the moment and its a gutsy call taking Mummy but nice team all the same

Def: Not sure about Golby, I don't know much about him.  I think there are better options around that price.  Also not sure about Cameron.  Presumably you have him for the dpp link to Staker. You could also get that link with Bock or Jaksch if you want to with a cheaper player or you could do it with Broughton as a keeper.

Mid: I like your keepers.  Mitchell is a uniqu rookie, though it's hard to rate sny rookies given we haven't seen them at afl level.

Rucks: I like that you have gone for Mumford.  Most people have gone Goldstein who is in a similar position (had injury interrrupted season) at a similar price.

Forwards: NicNat, Daisy and Menzel all have injury clouds.  I can tell you that Daisy has been training through though missed the Utah trip (I'm a magpie supporter) but can't tell you about the other two.  You'll need to watch them closely, though I probably wouldn't go all three.

Ringo

Welcome Babylove.

Defence: Would probably have taken Grimes over Hartlett personally but as you say will be watching. Golby could be the Hanley for Brisbane this year looked good prior to injury.  Watch both Cameron and Jaksch in NAB before making final selection for D/F DPP

Mids: Solid here just no C/F DPP. You have a number in forward line but none in Mid.  I would look at moving Menzell to mids and select another forward rookie.

Rucks - Ballsy call with Mumford but if he stays injury free could be a nice POD, Berger a must at that price.

Forwards: Just watch the progress of both Thomas and Nat after surgery earlier this month.

Solid Team that I would rate 8/10 can improve with a few minor tweaks.

Hank2011

Really like the team with exception of golby. Can't see where the upside is going to come from and watched him a bit last year.
Harlett has massive upside if he can stay fit and get consistent. Hinkley will be good for him.
Vlustin is a watch because hard wick loves playing the highly rated kids early and this bloke is a hard nut.
The new ruck rules will hurt mummy. Need the athletic jumpers.

New Strategy

For a while I've been unhappy with the prices of the elite midfielders; I think prices will be very fluid for the first 4 or 5 rounds. Over the course of the season I suspect some popular players will depreciate 100k+ - however picking which ones will depreciate, is more about conjecture than fact at this point in time;
Swan's BE: 125
Watson's BE: 120
Cotchin's BE: 115

As such, I've chosen to consider downgrading one midfield ultra-premium to Fyfe and used the additional funds on Atley and Moloney. It also gives more options to upgrade to in form and emerging ultra-premiums which are at a more agreeable price.

I've also chosen to avoid Luenberger and instead chosen two rucks, who ought to have good and consistent seasons. Bellchambers may be Essendon's #1 rucks, ergo good value

I'm not sold on Atley and North don't have a favourable draw either.

Maybe down grade him and keep some spare cash

fair call, also at lewis's price you can get wright/dusty/de boer they all should avg 90+
and use the money you get from D/G atley & D/G Lewis and U/G fyfe to a proper premo.

agreed, and i think bellchambers will do ok this year.

new team, it's pretty bloody close. Toby Greene has been selected because why the bloody hell not (may revert to Fyfe)

but yeah, thoughts, comments, etc

I ALSO HAVE ZERO DOLLARS REMAINING  8)

I think you will find Vanunen and Kennedy won't line up round 1. Docherty unlikely too. Goodes, who should be upgraded off the rookie list, is likely to be highest scoring back rookie this year so should be taking one of their places.
Your rucks are very weak.
Colquhoun in the midfield is a waste, put him down back if you want him and get a better scoring midfield rookie that will play midfield where the points are (Wines, Lonergan, Stevens, Jones etc.)
Other than that, I think your team is shaping up quite well.

Having both Martin and Wright is an expensive risk. Probably better to downgrade one to a 220-300k player (e.g. Byrnes, Varcoe) and turn Greene into a true premium.

+1

Also fix rucks, you can do a lot better with the $958k you have spent there

You have cheaped out on the rookies and I'm not convicned that you'll have a playing 22.

Lewis is an interesting selection. I don't think he'll get any better. Maybe downgrade him to a mid pricer (JJK?) so you can afford a F6 who'll get regular games.

Same deal in the backline. I can see the appeal of someone like Atley so maybe swap one of your premiums to him and spend the extra on upgrading Greene, and also getting Goodes into the backline, Macaffer forward instead of the ultra cheapies.

Rowe should be on your ruck bench if Cox is forward.

I'd upgrade Kvelertak's Nekroskop to Aenaon's Necroscope.

nightwalker_1310au

Nice solid team mate. Love the back pick in Hartlett. He will fire up. Midfield is strong especially with the unique pick in Moloney and Toby Greene. Forward line strong with unique pick. In wright. Only concern I have is swap Rowe forward and replace wits for Rowe and then get some unique player with extra cash.

Can you rate my one please

phwoahh. I listened to cendres et sang on the way home tonight. But still, Kvelertak s/t is probably the best record of 2010, I still play it almost weekly and hasn't gotten slightly old. Such a solid record.

Rookie's are rookies - they'll sort themselves out over time. I'm tempted to keep Kennedy in the forwards for the captains loophole on the basis that he may get some gametime as the season goes on - but yeah.

I like Rowe in my forward line because no forward rookies have impressed me - I'm sure they well. I also like Colquohoun in the midfield; he's well priced and will have constant growth throughout the season; perhaps a cost projection similar to Shiel last season; giving time to trade when a Sam Gibson of 2013 plays - that's the plan!

I also think Greene will impress this season; he had a bloody brilliant first year; and will improve, as will Giles whom I believe a fit Brogan/Philips will aid longlivity.

However I've made some stark changes to my team; I'm off the Bellchambers bandwagon for the moment; he looked good but I'm not 100% he'll play enough time as the #1 ruck at Essendon.

Downgraded Lewis (don't see huge returns from him; don't need the consistancy) got back on Luenberger and picked up Buddy and Dangerfield
