In every innings this series Warner has made a start, gotten a 50 but failed to make a century. Like stew said, surely there's no need to do something like that when you're merely runs away from a ton.

so guys....Hussey goes out in comes Khawaja.....who would you bring in for Cowan?

Cicjose

Doolan would be my first choice to replace Cowan

Would put Hughes back to open with Khawaja at 3 and then choice of Doolan or Ferguson at 5.  Doolan may also be the second keeper for the Ashes squad as well.

Alternately keep as is and give Mitchell Marsh a chance as opener probably a bit early at this stage as he is still only 21.

Why not Hussey out, and Hussey in...?

Yeah, would love to see David FINALLY get a game.

And why are we dropping Cowan anyway? He got run out. That doesn't say much about his batting ability. I don't know who else you'd wanna bring in to open anyway. He and Warner work perfectly together; a defensive batsman and an attacktive batsman.

Cowan out, Hughes becomes Warner's opening partner. Khawaja to come in at 3 and then pick any allrounder (I'd say a batting allrounder who bowls part time e.g. Watson, although I'm not against a bowling allrounder) to fill the Hussey void. It doesn't even have to be an allrounder, they could just as easily pick another batsman or bowler if they wanted. However, the solution to replacing Cowan is moving Hughes into the opener position and making Khawaja bat at 3. That's how I'd go about it.

Because he has averaged 24 over the last 5 tests...That is well below par as far as I'm concerned. Especially when we have a superior opener in Watson. Honestly I don't buy into all this 'better combo' stuff.

I think Warner and Watson would be a far more intimidating opening pair. Watson isn't as aggressive as people make him out to be, his temperament is every bit as good as Cowan and as far as SR goes Australia already has 3 batsmen that score faster than Watson.

Take a look at the best modern day opening pair Australia had. Langer and Hayden with 54 and 60 SR respectively. Now look at Watson with his SR of 50. Kind of tells me that an aggressive opening pair can and has been successful.

On top of this while it does need to be managed carefully Watson is a very handy bowler.

I don't get why people think that picking an inferior batsmen is justified by the fact that we THINK he PROBABLY 'goes better' with David Warner. Flawed flowering logic.

Spot on Sid! Clarke looking marvelous at No 4 here! I'd like to see Bird get a real go! Khawaja at 5 to get him settled into it! Hughes at 3 for now! Watto is not done and should open with Warner! Tim Pain hopefully gets a go in the one dayers to show his keeping ability!
